CHAPTER 51: More than himself

1036 Words
The words echoed through Solmere like a final truth. You finally love someone more than yourself. Silence followed immediately afterward. Heavy. Painfully heavy. Lucifer stood motionless beside Heaven while the golden corridor glowed softly around them. And for the first time since entering the temple— He looked shaken. Not angry. Not defensive. Shaken. Because the celestial memory was right. The realization settled coldly inside him. Centuries ago, Lucifer had chosen freedom over obedience. War over surrender. Pride over heaven itself. Everything he ever did— Every rebellion. Every kingdom built in darkness— Had always revolved around one thing. Himself. Until Heaven. Now suddenly— Her life mattered more than his throne. More than Hell. Possibly more than existence itself. And that terrified him beyond reason. The celestial version watched him quietly. “You understand now.” Lucifer’s expression hardened slightly. “I understand nothing about this place except that it enjoys tormenting me.” A faint smile touched the memory’s lips. “You used humor less before the fall.” Heaven blinked softly. “You joke?” Lucifer looked personally offended. “Occasionally.” The celestial version actually laughed quietly. The sound startled Heaven. Because it sounded exactly like Lucifer— Only freer. Lighter. Gods. The realization hurt unexpectedly. The memory version stepped closer again. Lucifer’s shadows immediately sharpened protectively around Heaven. The celestial figure noticed. And smiled faintly once more. “She truly changed you.” Lucifer answered coldly— “She ruined my peace.” Heaven stared at him. “That sounded almost affectionate.” “It was not.” The mate bond warmed traitorously. Lucifer visibly regretted speaking. The celestial version tilted his head thoughtfully. “You were never meant to love easily.” Something painful flickered across Lucifer’s face. “Love was never meant for me.” The answer came too quickly. Too honestly. Heaven’s chest tightened painfully. Because beneath those words lived centuries of loneliness. The celestial memory’s expression saddened again. “That is the greatest lie darkness ever taught you.” Lucifer went silent. The temple glowed brighter around them suddenly. The celestial rivers beneath the marble floor began flowing faster while golden symbols appeared across the walls. The Wellspring Flame reacted to emotion. And right now— The temple was reacting to Lucifer. The memory looked toward Heaven afterward. “The flame awakens because your soul accepted him completely.” Heaven frowned softly. “What does that mean?” “It means balance recognized balance.” The explanation made almost no sense. Unfortunately everyone in this temple spoke like ancient riddles given physical form. Lucifer sounded unimpressed. “You speak exactly like the heavens.” “And you still pretend not to understand.” The shadows around Lucifer moved sharply again. Because deep down— He did understand. More than he wanted to. The celestial memory slowly raised one glowing hand toward Heaven. Lucifer instantly stepped between them. “No.” The word cracked through the corridor dangerously. The memory paused. Then looked at Lucifer with something painfully close to sympathy. “You fear losing her more than death itself.” Lucifer’s silence answered clearly enough. The celestial version lowered his hand calmly afterward. “I will not harm her.” “You are not touching her.” Heaven sighed softly. “You’re being dramatic again.” Lucifer looked at her flatly. “We are inside a divine temple speaking to my celestial ghost.” “That is fair actually.” The memory smiled faintly at their exchange. Then softly— “You love how gentle she is.” Lucifer froze briefly. The mate bond pulsed warm. Because yes. Gods, yes. He loved her kindness. The softness she carried despite the darkness constantly surrounding them. The way she still looked at the world with hope. The way she looked at him without fear. Lucifer’s expression dimmed slightly. “And one day this world will punish her for it.” Heaven immediately frowned. “That’s pessimistic.” “That’s experience.” The celestial version watched him carefully. “No,” he said quietly. “That is fear.” Silence. Lucifer looked away instantly. Because once again— The memory was right. Heaven stepped closer beside him. “You don’t trust happiness.” Lucifer laughed softly beneath his breath. “Happiness rarely survives.” The sadness inside those words nearly broke her heart. Before Heaven could respond— The temple suddenly trembled violently. Golden light burst across the corridor walls. The celestial memory’s expression changed immediately. Serious now. “The sanctum opens.” A massive rumbling echoed deep within Solmere. Far ahead— Gigantic doors slowly emerged from the golden light itself. Ancient white stone covered in glowing celestial symbols. And behind those doors— Power. Immense power. The Wellspring. The celestial flame inside Heaven reacted violently. She gasped sharply as golden light spread rapidly beneath her skin again. Lucifer caught her immediately. “Heaven.” The mate bond surged painfully. The celestial memory looked toward the doors. “The flame calls its bearer.” Lucifer’s shadows darkened sharply. “She is not going anywhere alone.” “You cannot protect her from this part.” Lucifer’s expression turned lethal instantly. “I am growing tired of hearing that.” The temple trembled again. The great doors slowly began opening. Blinding golden light poured through the widening gap while ancient whispers echoed across Solmere. The flame inside Heaven burned hotter. Calling her. Pulling her forward. She clutched Lucifer’s arm tightly trying to steady herself. “It hurts…” Panic flashed through Lucifer instantly. The celestial memory stepped closer carefully. “The Wellspring recognizes her soul.” Heaven struggled to breathe evenly now. The light pouring from the sanctum felt alive. Watching her. Waiting. Lucifer held her closer instinctively while staring toward the opening doors with growing hatred. Because every instinct inside him screamed danger. Not physical danger. Something worse. Loss. The celestial memory looked toward Lucifer one final time. “She will soon face the first trial.” Lucifer’s gaze sharpened murderously. “What trial?” The silver-winged version answered softly— “To discover whether love can survive truth.” Then the doors fully opened. And Heaven screamed.
