Chapter Nine

"Did you see what he did to her?" Chloe had become the subject of gossip by the time the board meeting was ended. She had heard whispers of her name the moment she entered the assistant's lounge. Most people looked at her with pity; others looked at her like she deserved what she got even though Chloe had done them no harm. Chloe adjusted her glass and moved to the coffee machine, splitting the two ladies gossiping about her at the coffee machine. Their mouths were sealed when they saw her. Amy came up to her as Chloe refilled her cup. "I am sorry for what happened at the board meeting." Chloe looked expressionless. "The boss was right. I am not yet a staff, and it is unwise for a non-staff member to listen at a board meeting." Chloe took her cup and sipped her coffee. Amy was perplexed by Chloe's reaction. Of course, an average person would be scorning or resigning from this position, but it was clear that Chloe was not average. Amy nodded at Chloe's response. Logan left his office at 11 am, 30 minutes after his board meeting had ended. He was waiting for his father at the famous French restaurant Je t'aime. Logan checked his watch every minute. He had told himself he would leave if his father didn't come in the next 2 minutes. Logan was impatient. He called the waiter and was ready to leave when his father came with a beautiful slender blond woman. She looked younger than he was. While his mother was well aware of his father's infidelity, Logan tolerated it much less. His father grinned; he offered his guest a chair before he did. That act alone irritated Logan. When did his father ever give his mother that kind of treatment? "Logan, my boy." Logan frowned. "I am not a boy, much less the girl you are with is a child." Adam chuckled like his son crackled the funniest joke. "You should not take things too seriously." Logan moved his glares from his father to the lady, and she blushed when he focused his attention on her. Logan rolled his eyes. "You asked for this meeting, yet you show up late and then with someone!" He tapped his fingers uncontrollably on the table—a bad habit when angry. "I just met Stacy on the way." The girl leaned closer to Adam. "It's actually Scarlet," she whispered, but Adam simply ignored her. "Have you decided on my offer?" "No, that is my final answer. I worked hard on making the Ford enterprise mine without your money or anyone else. I will not merge it with your company." Adam hit the table with his fist, causing Scarlet a shock. "You forget it, your company too!" "And you forget I wish I was not your blood." The words he spoke caused the environment to be chilled like winter was here. Logan drops a large bill on the table even though all he ordered was water. He learned at a young age that his father was no hero in a cape but a villain in a suit and that the only woman he valued was his mother. Logan wondered why he attended a meeting that his father instigated. Maybe a part of him hoped his father would one day change. He took out his phone to call his new assistant. "Hello, this is Chloe Martini speaking from Ford enterprise." Even though her voice sounded like heaven, he felt calm hearing her voice and hated it. While he had vowed he would hate women, he could not help but be attracted to his new assistant. "Do you not even have your boss's number?" "I apologize, Sir." Logan wanted to know what was underneath that skin and why did nothing faze her. "I have an extra suit hanging in my office; bring it to this address." He waited for her to jotter down the address. "Within 30 minutes," he completed. Chloe slammed the phone down when he ended the call, it was lunchtime, and she had not yet eaten. Logan had called her when she was about to go for her lunch break. Unfortunately, the distance from the office to the restaurant he had sent was 30 minutes drive without traffic, and by the time she came back, she would have missed her lunch break. She hurried up, taking the suit and putting it on a cover to avoid any stains. Chloe got to the restaurant at precisely 30 minutes. She had searched for her boss, but he was not to be seen. Chloe had called him. "I am at the restaurant, Sir." "I am no longer there; come to the construction site in fifteen minutes." He said, ending the call. Chloe rushed to the construction site. "Who are you looking for? Miss" the security guard asked her at the entrance. Her hands were aching from holding the suit. "Mr. Ford" "Your pass" She went through her bag, looked for her employer's card, and handed it over to the security guard. The man let her through. The construction site had no clear pathway, only bricks of sand and stones. Her feet ached from using heels to step on the rough surfaces. Chloe steps on a pile of stones, and her ankle twisted. She fell down with the suit as support, dirtying the cover. At that moment, her phone rang, and she searched through her bag to pick the phone up. "Miss Martini, I won't tolerate any delay again. I am no longer at the construction site. Meet me at the company hotel." Chloe was tempted to throw away her phone. While her ankles ached and she was hungry, Logan had not told her which hotel she was going to as the company had many hotels. Chloe arrived at the hotel where Amy had given her description to see her boss waiting at the hotel entrance. He scrunched his face when he saw her. "You are late. I have no use for the suit again." Chloe walked to the nearest dustbin in front of the hotel and threw the suit away. Logan was alarmed by her action. "Why did you do that?" he questioned. "Because you said you had no use for it again. If that is all, Sir, I will return to work." Chloe halts a cab and leaves her boss confused. Then, for the first time in a long time, Chloe smiled while looking at Logan's expression in the cab. She knew he didn't expect her to act this way, yet he had pushed her to the edge.
