Chapter 7 – The Stones Do Not Lie

728 Words
The clearing was older than the forest. That was the first thing Liora felt as they stepped into it—the weight of time pressing down, thick and watchful. The trees curved inward in a near-perfect circle, their trunks marked with symbols similar to those carved into the lodge ceiling. At the center stood seven massive stones, half-buried in the earth, each etched with glowing lines that pulsed faintly like a heartbeat. The air hummed. Not sound—presence. Liora’s skin prickled as if the stones recognized her before she recognized them. “The Circle of Witness,” the elder announced. “What is spoken here is not heard by ears alone.” Kael stood beside her, close enough that she could feel his heat, but not touching. His restraint felt deliberate—protective, but also wary. As if he feared what might happen if he crossed that line. “Stand in the center,” the elder said. Liora hesitated. The pull returned—stronger now. Not from Kael. From the stones. She stepped forward. The moment her boot touched the inner ring, the ground shifted. Not visibly, but undeniably. The symbols on the stones flared brighter, casting pale light across the clearing. A low vibration traveled up her legs and settled in her chest. Her breath caught. “By blood,” the elder intoned, “by bone, by bond unspoken—show us what walks among us.” The light surged. Images slammed into Liora’s mind without warning. Not dreams. Memories. A burning village under a red moon. Wolves kneeling—not in submission, but in fear. A woman holding a child, whispering words that felt like a spell and a goodbye wrapped into one. Run. Hide. Forget. Liora gasped, dropping to her knees. Kael moved instantly—but stopped himself a breath away, fists clenched, eyes glowing faintly gold. The stones reacted. The light shifted from pale to deep silver, then—shockingly—to a dark, molten blue. A murmur rippled through the elders. “That color…” someone whispered. “It hasn’t appeared in generations,” another said. The elder’s face had gone rigid. “This is impossible.” Liora looked up, shaking. “What does it mean?” The ground beneath her cracked—just slightly—like ice under pressure. Kael finally broke protocol and grabbed her arm, hauling her back as the stones roared. Not sound—truth. The symbols flared violently, and for a single, terrifying moment, the image of a massive wolf—not grey, not black, but shadowed with blue fire—rose behind Liora like a reflection that didn’t belong to her body. Then everything went still. The light dimmed. The stones fell silent. Liora sagged against Kael, breath coming in short, sharp pulls. He held her now without hesitation, one arm locked around her back, grounding her. The elders stared. Not at Kael. At her. “She is not human,” one finally said. “No,” the elder corrected slowly. “She is something older.” Kael’s voice was low. Dangerous. “Say it plainly.” The elder met his gaze. “She is unclaimed blood. A line erased from history. One that does not answer to pack law.” A chill slid down Liora’s spine. “Erased… why?” No one answered. That was answer enough. Kael looked down at her, something fierce and conflicted burning behind his eyes. “This is why they hid you,” he said softly. “This is why the bond formed—but didn’t complete.” Her heart skipped. “Didn’t… complete?” “If it had,” he said, jaw tight, “the stones would have shattered.” Silence fell again, heavier than before. From the edge of the clearing, a twig snapped. Kael’s head snapped up. “We’re not alone.” Too late. A figure stepped from the trees—lean, smiling, eyes too sharp to be friendly. “Well,” the stranger drawled, gaze locking onto Liora, “so the rumors were true.” Kael moved in front of her instantly, his voice a growl. “You shouldn’t be here.” The man’s smile widened. “Neither should she.” Liora’s blood pulsed—hot, reactive. The stones flickered. Whatever she was… Whatever had been awakened… Others had felt it too. And they were coming.
