Chapter 1 – The Night of Betrayal
Chapter 1 – The Night of Betrayal
The snow fell in thick, silent sheets, muffling the city’s usual hum. Liora pulled her coat tighter, her fingers numb despite the warmth of her scarf. She had hoped tonight would be different—Christmas Eve was supposed to be special, filled with laughter and promises—but reality had other plans.
Her phone buzzed again, displaying a string of messages she never wanted to see. Her boyfriend. With someone else. The words blurred as tears stung her eyes. Liora felt her chest tighten, a cold wave of betrayal washing over her.
Without thinking, she stepped out into the quiet streets, boots crunching on snow, her breath forming small clouds in the icy air. She didn’t know where she was going—she only knew she had to move, to escape the suffocating ache of heartbreak. The city felt empty tonight, abandoned, and even the twinkling holiday lights seemed hollow.
The streets ended, giving way to the dark fringe of the forest she had always been warned about. The trees loomed like silent sentinels, their branches weighed down with snow. Liora hesitated at the edge, a shiver not entirely caused by cold running down her spine. Something about the forest felt… alive. Watching. Waiting.
Her heart, heavy from betrayal, propelled her forward. One step. Then another. Soon, the city’s noise was a distant memory, replaced by the whisper of wind through the trees and the crunch of snow underfoot. A sense of isolation settled over her. Yet, amidst the fear, a strange pull urged her deeper into the forest, as if the trees themselves were guiding her.
A snap of a branch behind her jolted Liora, and she spun around. Nothing. Just snow and shadows. She swallowed her fear, trying to calm the rapid beat of her heart. “It’s just me,” she whispered to herself, but the sound sounded hollow, uncertain.
As she ventured further, the forest opened to a clearing bathed in silver moonlight. Snowflakes drifted lazily from the sky, glinting like tiny stars on the ground. And there, in the center of the clearing, was a figure—tall, broad, and impossibly still.
Liora froze, every instinct screaming at her to run. The man’s eyes caught hers immediately—amber, piercing, almost unnatural. He was beautiful in a way that seemed otherworldly, yet there was a dangerous edge in his gaze, a wildness that made her stomach knot with fear and… curiosity.
“You shouldn’t be here,” the voice was low, rich, and commanding, carrying across the snow-laden clearing like a whisper and a roar all at once.
“I… I’m just…” Liora stammered, unsure what excuse sounded sane. “I… I needed to… walk.”
The man stepped closer, his movement smooth, predatory. Liora’s pulse quickened. Something about him was wrong—but fascinatingly so. Her skin prickled as if charged by static electricity, the air between them thickening, tense.
“You feel it, don’t you?” His voice dropped to a murmur, almost intimate. “The pull… the connection?”
“I—I don’t know what you mean,” she said, but her mind screamed in denial and awe. There was something in his presence that tugged at her very core, a sensation she could neither ignore nor explain.
A sudden rustle in the trees startled her, and before she could react, a shadow lunged from the darkness. Liora froze, heart hammering—but the man moved with impossible speed, intercepting whatever had come for her.
A low growl rumbled through the clearing, vibrating in her chest. The creature—larger than any wolf she had ever seen, fur black as midnight, eyes glinting gold—stopped at the man’s side, recognizing him instantly.
He turned to her then, human eyes sharp, commanding, yet protective. “You are mine now,” he said softly, almost reverently. “I claim you as my mate.”
The words sent a shock through her, confusion warring with disbelief. “Mate? What… what are you talking about?”
“You belong here. With me. With my pack. You’ve been marked since the moment you walked into the forest.” His tone left no room for argument, yet it carried a strange undertone—one of promise, and of danger.
Liora’s knees trembled. “I… I don’t understand. I’m human. I’m nothing like… whatever you are.”
“You’re more than human,” he said, amber eyes blazing with an intensity that made her knees buckle. “You just don’t know it yet.”
A flicker of movement at the edge of her vision pulled her attention. Dozens of shadows—wolves, massive and powerful—emerged from the trees, surrounding the clearing. They watched, alert, silent, their eyes gleaming in the moonlight. Each step they took radiated authority, and Liora realized she had never felt more exposed—or more alive.
“Stay close,” the man warned. “Tonight is only the beginning.”
Before she could ask what he meant, a cold wind surged through the clearing, carrying with it whispers that seemed to echo in her mind: Chosen. Bound. Moonbound.
The words sent a chill down her spine. She didn’t understand them. But the pull she felt—the undeniable connection to this Alpha, to this world she had never known—was irresistible. Her chest ached with fear, fascination, and something else she could not name.
“I…” she began, trying to steady her voice, “I don’t know if I can—”
“You will,” he interrupted, stepping closer, and the scent of him—wild, musky, intoxicating—wrapped around her senses. “You have no choice. You are mine, Liora. And I will protect you. Always.”
Something in her—fear, curiosity, desire—shifted. She didn’t fully understand, but a part of her wanted to believe him. Wanted to surrender to the pull she felt in her bones, the one that whispered that her life was about to change forever.
And in the cold, silvered forest, with wolves circling silently, and the moon casting its pale light upon her, Liora felt it—the undeniable beginning of a bond that would alter the course of her life.
Something dark, dangerous, and intoxicating had found her. And she had no idea how far it would take her…
