I watched, languidly and calmly as Alaric and Lucas argued back and forth on what to order for dinner when we get home. Lucas always so playful, so carefree and joking as he goaded Alaric. And Alaric, cold as ice, steel as bones, snipping his replies sharply as Lucas bates him. For someone always so careful with what he said, always thinking ahead to the next step, he was unusually short tempered. Quick to retort, quick to respond without thinking.
He is angry My wolf's voice whispered through my mind. I nodded as I sighed. Yes, yes he was. And I couldn't blame him. Friction between the packs have been growing. Between the population of she wolves dwindling, rouge sightings becoming more frequent and the slayers taking more supernaturals, the packs were near rage. They all wanted to fight back retaliate, do anything to stop what's happening, but unfortunately there wasn't really nothing that could be done. Where we could fight and kill the rouges should they cross pack lands, the slayers were off limits. At least until we could get the information and numbers needed to fight back.
As for the dwindling she wolf problem, many have taken to taking human mates, while some have taken other supernaturals hoping to repopulate the female problem. But it seems so far only male children have been born. Any female carried did not make it to term, their life draining before their intended time. I sighed sadly. Not for myself, I never intended to take a mate. There was too much that weighed me down, too much in my past. I did not wish for any she wolf to face the pain I have had to, did not want her to help me carry a burden that was not her own. Need a mate. Strong mate. My wolf's voice once again spoke. It was odd, he normally did not speak. Did not make his presence known unless emotions ran high, unless danger lurked too close for comfort.
"What the hell is that?"!" Alaric snarled, as he slammed on the breaks. Tires screeched, making all of us flinch from out heightened hearing. "It moved!" Lucas shouted. I studied the odd creature for a moment. That is until it unfurled itself and revealed a very pale, very scared and emaciated girl. "It..it's a girl." Lucas breathed before jumping out of the car. He quickly made his way over to the girl, she just watched, her eyes growing larger with fear with each step Lucas took near, her.
She shuffled back as quickly as her body could take her trying to put distance between her and Lucas. I wonder why she is so scared? My eyes traveled the girls body looking for injuries when they landed on her leg, all I could see was black. NO , not here not now I told my wolf, shoving him down where there was no chance he could get out. I couldn't see the extent of her injury, I just knew it was bad. "Hey, hey we're not going to hurt you." Lucas told her as calmly as he could.
Seeing the girl's fear I stepped forward, just one step and her eyes snapped to mine. Her eyes, as green as the forest bore into mine. Could she see me? Enough to make direct eye contact? I wondered. Her wide eyes held so much fear, so much pain my control over my wolf was slipping. Seeing a woman in her condition, no matter race was enough to set any male wolf off. We cherished the few females we had, even the humans.
But, before I could move, before I could blink she took off running. As she passed in front of the car, the headlights highlighted the extent of her injuries, though only briefly. I saw her leg bleeding profusely, saw how she grit her teeth in pain with each step she took, saw how it looked to have been gashed open, though I didn't know how deep. "Damn it. Eli, she's dying." Lucas shouted, before taking off after her. I growled, surprised to hear Alaric snarl behind me before we both dashed after Lucas.
We caught up to her quickly and she turned to face us. Her brows scrunched trying to see us, her breath came in short rapid succession. Her pale and sunken in face was filled with terror. "L..le...leav...leave m..me...al....alone." She stuttered out, her voice raspy as if she hasn't drank anything in a long time. "You're hurt. You need a doctor." Lucas told her. She shook my head frantically. "N..no. I..I'm fi..fine." She stuttered. "You're obviously not fine." Alaric quipped. "Why can you not go to a doctor?" I asked her gently. She turned to me "I...I Just J.just ca..can't." She said lowering her head and curling in on herself as if she expected someone to hit her.
"Fine, come with us. We can take you home, get you patched up and take you wherever you need to go." Her head snapped up to me. "Wh..why?" She whispered. "Because you are a woman, out in the middle of the night hurt. We can not just leave you here." I said gently. She looked troubled as she thought about it. "Fine." She whispered. As soon as the words left her mouth her knees buckled, and she started falling. Lucas made it to her before she could hit the ground, growling as he carried her bridal style back to the car.
Once she was where we could see her properly, I fumed. The girl's leg had been torn open to the bone, bleeding like a flowing river. Her exposed chest held a large jagged looking scar, that had opened in her haste and was bleeding down her chest. She torso and arms were riddled in scars. This girl had been abused, terribly abused. "Eli, we have to get back she is dying." Lucas whispered carrying her back to the car and holding her on his lap. I turned to Alaric, who was staring after the girl in a mixture of raw disdain, anger, and pain. "Come Alaric. Let us see if we can save the poor girl." I said turning back to the car.
Alaric gave me curt nod and silently made his way back to the drivers seat of the car. I turned to look at the poor girl. Her hair was as black as night, and flowed down her body like a waterfall. Her skin looked as if she had rolled in ashes, it was so gray. Her frame was nothing but skin and bones, making me wonder how she had even managed to run in the first place. It is amazing what fear and adrenaline can do. I thought to myself. "How could someone do this?" Lucas grit through his teeth. "Human behavior is something we have yet to understand." I told him as calmly as I could. "But anyone of any species that could do that to a female does not deserve to draw breath." My tone turned hard. Power seeped out despite my attempt to keep control. We would get this girl home and do our best to save her life. Should she survive the night, we would help her heal, feed her and get her healthy. Then and only then will she leave.
