The Midnight Encounter
The city lights flickered like distant stars, blurred by the heavy mist rolling over the empty streets. It was midnight - that strange hour when the world shifted, and things forgotten by daylight whispered in the shadows.
Elysia shivered as she hugged her jacket tighter around her frame, the autumn wind biting into her skin. She shouldn't have taken the shortcut. Her foster mother always warned her: Never walk home alone after midnight.
But Elysia was stubborn. And tired. And frankly, she thought her foster mother was a little crazy with all her superstitions.
Her boots clicked against the wet pavement. The mist thickened, swallowing street lamps whole, and the hairs on the back of her neck stood up.
Someone was watching her.
She spun around - but the street was empty.
"Get a grip, Ely," she muttered, quickening her steps.
She didn't see the figure emerge from the alley until it was too late. One moment she was alone - the next, he stood before her, blocking her path.
Tall. Dark. Impossible.
He wore a long black coat that swirled around his ankles, and his eyes... oh, God. His eyes weren't normal. They were molten silver, burning into her soul.
"Lost, little one?" His voice was low, melodic, like a song only she could hear.
Elysia stepped back instinctively, her heart hammering.
"I-I'm fine," she stammered.
A ghost of a smile touched his lips. He tilted his head slightly, studying her.
"You smell different," he murmured. "Not quite human... and not quite something else."
Her blood ran cold.
"What the hell are you talking about?"
The stranger stepped closer. She could feel his presence like a storm gathering overwhelming, magnetic, terrifying and yet... tempting.
Before she could bolt, his hand shot out not to grab her, but to brush a strand of hair from her face with astonishing tenderness.
"Interesting," he whispered. "Very interesting."
Then as suddenly as he appeared he vanished, melting into the mist like a dream.
Elysia stood frozen, heart pounding, staring at the empty street.
Her world had just shifted.
She just didn't know it yet.
