Chapter 26 The creatures came from the direction of the shed, some sluggish and dying, others appearing strong enough. Seth must have let them out of their cages, or one of the animals itself did. Most were inexplicable to Sean when he tried to get a good look at them—here was something like rolling seaweed but with blank places like Seth’s face, here was a tall, slender, almost deerlike creature with dripping mouths on three sides. Dane tried to pull Sean to his feet but the concentration of difficult magic dragged him down. After a moment, Dane gave up and ducked down to the ground next to Sean, pressed them both low to the damp, cold earth. The animals passed close by, dizzying Sean, then set into the people around the well. More screams, more flames. Sean wiped at his bleeding nose.
