The Man Who Owned Everything
Chapter One
The Man Who Owned Everything
Amara Ellis learned three things about life before she turned twenty-six.
First, trust was a luxury not everyone could afford.
Second, people only remembered your value when they needed something from you.
And third, a person could lose everything in a single night.
The rain poured heavily against the glass windows of the small apartment she had called home for the past two years. The city outside was alive with lights, expensive cars, and people chasing dreams she was beginning to believe were never meant for her.
Amara sat quietly on the edge of her bed, staring at the rejection email glowing on her laptop screen.
Another job application denied.
Another opportunity gone.
Another reminder that starting over was harder than she had imagined.
She closed the laptop and let out a slow breath.
"Maybe I'm just not meant to win," she whispered.
The words tasted bitter.
A year ago, Amara Ellis had everything she thought she wanted. A promising career, a loving relationship, and a future that looked perfect from the outside.
Until everything collapsed.
Her boyfriend of four years had betrayed her with her own best friend. The company she worked for had blamed her for a mistake she didn't make because the person responsible had more connections.
And when she needed people the most, everyone disappeared.
Since then, she had built walls around her heart and focused on one thing only.
Survival.
Her phone vibrated on the small table beside her.
She looked at the screen and saw a message from an unknown number.
Unknown:
"Your interview has been rescheduled. Vale Corporation. Tomorrow, 9:00 AM."
Amara frowned.
Vale Corporation.
Even hearing the name made people lower their voices.
Everyone knew about Vale Corporation.
It was one of the biggest companies in the country, controlling businesses in technology, real estate, finance, and luxury brands.
And at the center of that empire was Adrian Vale.
The man newspapers called the "ice prince."
A billionaire before thirty.
A genius in business.
A man who had never lost a major deal.
But also a man known for being ruthless.
Cold.
Unreachable.
Amara had read enough articles about him to know one thing.
Adrian Vale did not care about people's feelings.
She almost ignored the message.
Almost.
But then she looked around her small apartment.
The unpaid bills.
The empty refrigerator.
The worn-out furniture.
Pride did not pay rent.
With a sigh, she replied.
Amara:
"I will be there."
She didn't know it yet, but that single decision would change her entire life.
---
The next morning, Amara stood in front of the tallest building in the city.
Vale Tower.
The glass structure seemed to touch the sky, reflecting the sunlight like a crown.
She adjusted her blazer and walked inside.
Immediately, she felt out of place.
Everyone around her looked confident. Expensive suits. Designer clothes. Important conversations.
She looked down at her simple outfit.
Professional, but nothing compared to theirs.
A receptionist looked up.
"Name?"
"Amara Ellis. I have an interview."
The receptionist typed something into the computer before looking back at her.
"Thirty-second floor. Human Resources will direct you from there."
"Thank you."
Amara entered the elevator.
As the doors closed, she caught her reflection.
She looked nervous.
She hated that.
Amara Ellis was not someone who scared easily.
Life had already broken her once.
She refused to let a building intimidate her.
The elevator doors opened.
The thirty-second floor was silent.
Too silent.
A woman in a gray suit approached her.
"Ms. Ellis?"
"Yes."
"I'm Claire from Human Resources. Follow me."
Amara walked behind her, noticing how everyone seemed to work with extreme focus.
No laughing.
No unnecessary conversations.
No distractions.
It felt less like an office and more like a battlefield.
Claire stopped outside a large glass door.
"Mr. Vale will conduct the final interview himself."
Amara's steps paused.
"Mr. Vale?"
Claire nodded.
"Yes."
A strange feeling moved through her.
She had expected a normal interview.
Not a meeting with Adrian Vale himself.
"Why would the CEO interview someone applying for an assistant position?" Amara asked.
Claire gave a small smile.
"Because Mr. Vale doesn't trust people easily."
That answer did not make her feel better.
The door opened.
"Ms. Ellis?"
A deep voice came from inside.
Amara entered.
And for the first time, she met Adrian Vale.
He stood beside the window with his back toward her, wearing a perfectly tailored black suit.
The city stretched behind him.
For a moment, she understood why people feared him.
Power surrounded him.
When he turned around, his expression was exactly what she expected.
Cold.
Unreadable.
His dark eyes studied her like he was trying to discover every secret she had ever hidden.
"Sit."
One word.
No greeting.
No smile.
Amara sat across from his desk.
Adrian picked up her file.
"Amara Ellis."
"Yes."
"Twenty-six years old. Graduated top of your class. Three years experience in management."
He looked up.
"Then why are you applying for a personal assistant position?"
Amara held his gaze.
"Because I need the opportunity."
Most people would have given a more impressive answer.
But she knew powerful people respected honesty.
Adrian leaned back slightly.
"Most applicants lie during interviews."
"I wasn't aware honesty was a disadvantage."
For the first time, something changed in his expression.
Not a smile.
Not warmth.
Interest.
"You have confidence."
"I have experience."
A moment of silence passed.
Adrian looked back at her file.
"You left your previous company after a workplace conflict."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Amara's jaw tightened slightly.
"Because sometimes staying somewhere means accepting disrespect."
"And you don't accept disrespect?"
"No."
His eyes remained on her.
Interesting.
That was the first word that came to Adrian Vale's mind.
Most people who entered his office tried to impress him.
They praised him.
They agreed with everything he said.
Amara Ellis was different.
She wasn't trying to win his approval.
She was simply standing her ground.
And Adrian didn't know whether that annoyed him or intrigued him.
"You're hired."
Amara blinked.
"I'm sorry?"
"You're hired."
The words came so quickly she almost wondered if she heard correctly.
"But you haven't asked me anything else."
"I already know enough."
"That's unusual."
Adrian picked up another document.
"Working for me will not be easy."
Amara stood.
"Neither is being unemployed."
His eyes lifted to hers.
And for a brief second, something almost like amusement appeared.
Almost.
"Tomorrow. Eight AM."
"I'll be here."
She turned to leave.
"Ms. Ellis."
She stopped.
"Yes?"
Adrian stared at her.
"Do not mistake this job for a normal opportunity."
His voice lowered.
"Everyone who works for me eventually learns that secrets have consequences."
Amara frowned.
"Why are you telling me this?"
"Because you look like someone who believes she can handle anything."
A pause.
"Everyone believes that until they discover the truth."
Amara left the office without another word.
But Adrian Vale continued watching the closed door long after she was gone.
For the first time in years...
He was curious about someone.
And that was dangerous.
