Chapter 19 - Guilt trip

1031 Words
Sophie's P.O.V Looking over at Alex, I felt terrible. His eyes held relief but his brows held worry. I could see the inner turmoil bubbling inside. Ellie was already gone so I could just imagine how peeved Alex must be considering the news. Imagine getting such news that you're the possible cause of your mother's death with no detailed explanation….only a warning. I'd be paranoid, thinking over every single thing that I may do, will do, and is doing. That isn't living at all….loving should have impulsive decisions, that's what makes it fun. He just stood there. In the middle of the African historical artifacts exhibit with the bitter cold. The rain faintly made an appearance once more. "Alex?" I asked. I was terrified with how he would react. He was mute just looking into space, probably thinking about everything. I wanted to give him a hug but that error keeps swirling in my mind… the word that he constantly repeats to me 'friends'. Although hugging doesn't have to be romantic, I still don't have any friendly intentions. "A-Alex?" I tried again. This time he looked up at me, his eyes were filled with unshed tears and he looked…. Broken. "Why?" He asked. I scrunched my brows wondering what he was talking about. "Huh?" "Why can't I have good news? Why does karma have it out for me this hard?" He explained? "I-I dont-" "Why!" He screamed. Walking over to me he held my shoulders looking deep into my eyes. "A-Alex I don't kn-" "Why would I break the only rule given to me?" He shook my shoulders vigorously, trying to make sense of the situation. It was scaring me. His pupils were blown wide and he was sweating profusely in the ice-cold weather. I was shocked by his behavior so I ran. I ran as far as my legs could take me but he followed with an eerie wide smile on his face as he chased after me. I was running so fast that my legs felt numb. Taking on deep hills of air and the rain blazed on the pavement. My hair and yellow dress became apaked quickly, adding weight to my mass making it harder to swerve and dodge him. He was so close that my heart began racing. In and out went the breaths that I took. Up and down my chest went as knees buckled. "Don't run Sophie, just answer my question." It said. This isn't Alex at all. Its true shape began to unfold. It stretched high and all of Alex's features melted leaving a dark gloomy figure behind. It was spreading, suckomg the life out of everything leaving a dull gray as it chased me. "L-Leave. Me. Alone!" I shouted. Each word felt like a weight being added to my chest. It seemed that I was running in a low motion as three in front of me didn't seem closer no matter how fast I was running. "W-What's happening to me!" I screamed. Tears fell freely down my cheeks as I tried to pick up the pace. I could see each raindrop before they splattered on the pavement. I could feel the darkness closing in on me as I ran and cried. My eyes were getting droopy but I could see my father ahead. "Dad!" I screamed as I picked up the pace. He didn't seem to hear me though. The town didn't even look like the town. Sore it has the museum and other memorable places like the ice cream shop and Alex's house. Alex? If that thing isn't him, where is he? Ellie was getting closer, and so was the tree. Finally I was getting somewhere. My legs felt like they would fall off as I ran in the rain. Everyday feet hit the pavement the water would splash up only feet creating an uncanny feeling. So disgusting that it made my skin crawl. But I couldn't worry about that right now. I needed to get help. "Dad!" I screamed again but still no acknowledgement. "Dad, please look at me!" I tried again. The thing behind lagged as it held its sharp claws to me. "No one's going to save you! You can't run away from your problems much longer Sophie! Apologise and answer my question!" It bellowed. Suddenly my dad disappeared and the ground beneath feet began to melt into lava. "Leave me alone!" I cried out. The scorching heat from the lava contradicted the freezing blizzard. It was at its closest to me as my lungs choked me trying to get me to stop for a second. "Apologize!" It boomed. It was so good that I fell to the floor covering my ears. The darkness consumed everything except me. The place burned me though. Burned my legs and feet but it wasn't a third degree burn, it was like steam touching me. Hot but it didn't last long. Huffing and puffing I glared at the ground as I knew I couldn't run away this time. I was so exhausted. "It's my fault...it's my fault." I chanted. I was the reason Alex felt so empty. Soul crushed. My fault he didn't know where to turn! It's all my fault!. I'm sorry Alex. "Apologize." The darkness whispered. My fist balled at my sides as I decided to face it once and for all. "Fine! I'm sorry! I am so sorry! Is that what you wanted to hear? Leave me alone!" I shouted at it as I stopped running. I turned to stare at it dead on realising that it stopped chasing as well. It held sorrow in its eyes as it dashed for me, embracing me. "It's ok," it said as it comforted me. "Let it all out," "Answer my question. Why does everything bad happen to us?" I looked up at it as I cried. "B-because. We. Deserve. It." I said in between sobs. Tears flowed like a waterfall. I couldn't take it anymore. I don't even remember why I am crying. Is this even real? Why am I here? Why can't I leave? Wake up Sophie! Wake up ___________________________________________ Thanks for reading ?
