The two layed in bed reciting all the fun times they had together when dealing with Axteene. The rain has finally cooled, allowing the moon to dry up the cloud's cries. They watched the ceiling fan spin over and over again, counting its rotations. “Remember when we placed laxatives in her food so that she wouldn't be able to go to school? Sixty-one,” Sophie burst into laughter as she recalled Axteene going to school the next day in diapers. “Damn, that girl had no shame! Sixty-five,” The cold winter breeze flowed through the window taking the thin blue curtains along with it, forcing the two to seek warmth from each other. “She really is...remember when we flooded their house? Seventy,” More laughter filled the room as Alex thought back to how disastrous the flooding was.
“What were we thinking?”
“We were desperate and we all know that desperate times call for desperate measures.” Alex nodded in agreement. “I have to agree on that one...If we weren't here, what would you have been doing?” She hums, in question, thinking deeply before answering. “Well, ha….I would probably be helping another helpless prick like you to become the new Guardian.”
“Woah...Guardian?” His eyes expanded in awe as he looked directly into her eyes, she rested her head under his neck, sighing at the warmth that emitted from his body she snuggled up to him further. “I’m going to ignore that you indirectly called me a prick...Don’t you wanna know what I’d be doing?” Chuckling filled the room as she rolled off of him, cuddling up at his side. “Can you be dear and tell me what you would have been doing good sir?” A strong glare and then a roll of eyes had Sophie doubling over. “Very well, m’lady. I would have been searching the seven seas. Journaling my superstitious findings on old parchment.”
“No you twat...what would you really have been doing?” She slightly shoved him on his shoulder before turning her full attention to him. “I would probably be pulling more pathetic pranks….Hurting people without knowing, or being caught...I never thought of the consequences. But you know what? If I had done things differently...I wouldn't because I wouldn't have been able to meet you.” Sophie faced burnt a bright crimson before she shook it off and slapped him upside the head. “That's not a good reason to hurt people!”
“It is for me….Look at that.” he pointed outside at the moon. It blinked at them before going back to its nightly duties. The night was picturesque, everything accentuated each other. The creatures chirped as the wolves howled, signaling their location to the rest of the pack. Wrapping her arms around Alex’s body she looked at an equally picturesque view...Alex himself. She was gazing at his hair desperate to run her fingers through it before temptation became too heavy for her to bear and she finally gave in. Alex returned his gaze to her, then they were trained on her hands which ran freely through his hair. It was undoubtedly nostalgic, he thought of his mother doing something similar, too pained from the memory he carefully removed her hand. “I’m sorry...I shouldn't have-”
“No it's my fault...mom used to do that.” She nodded, following the moonlight outside joining in at the watch. Soon enough she became bored. Their eyes met again but this time Alex’s were filled with worry. “W-What if I fail...what if I can’t truly fix my mistakes? What will I do then?”
“Don’t worry Alex, of course, we will fix this crap together. I’ll make sure that you return to a happy and healthy mother.” Sighing, the young wizard looked up at Alex who was still counting the rotations of the spinning fan, her heart fluttered at their proximity. She wanted to move closer to him but she was deathly scared, the two don't really see eye to eye on things and she still disliked him for his past actions, but the night was cold and she knew that he was warm. Using her magic wasn't even an option considering she only knows how to light someone on fire and dry them when soaked. ‘What if he pushes me off?’ Shaking her head at her ridiculousness, she scooted closer to him.
Alex immediately took notice of this but thought nothing of it. He gladly accepted the shivering girl into his arms, craving a hug and warmth as well. “Just so you know, this doesn't change my thoughts about you,” Sophie said, smiling. She readjusted herself to lay directly on top of him, eliciting a cunning smirk from Alex. “Sure...But know that my bitterness towards you has dispersed,” A heavy breath escaped her lips as her eye holes filled up with water. She was clearly tired from the day’s….days’ work. Alex began to hum. It surprised Sophie but she soon accepted it as his melodious tune filled the room. It was sweet and airy, harmonious even when it was just him.
As time passed by, even the moon dimed in gratification from Alex’s hums. With the hums, he finally added words. Sophie was absolutely amazed but as he began to sing, her eyes fluttered fighting to keep open. Her mind was tired yet soothed, soon she found herself repeating his lyrics before she finally succumbed to the dream world. One filled with remnants from her planet, including her soaking in a buttercup leaf.
“How did you know that I was the one?
Even when I’ve hurt you so?
How did this all go from all to none?
Even when I refused to let you go.”
After a few minutes, Alex started to doze off as well, humming his lyrical tune. A really wonderful one.
