His jaw clenched like he didn’t appreciate being questioned. But he told me.
“I was sent.”
“Sent by who?”
“A name I’m not allowed to say.”
I rolled my eyes and laughed, a harsh laugh. “Oh! How lovely. A secret mission.”
He didn’t react. Just kept that blank, calm look like nothing I said mattered.
“Why are you here?” I repeated, my question more pointed this time.
“I am here to give you news.”
“News.” I pushed back in the seat, folded my arms. “About what?”
“About Dante.”
The name hit me like a slap. I blinked at him for a moment before my own panicked thoughts echoed in my head. “Dante?”
