Chapter 23: Home

He was back within twenty minutes and I let him in when he knocked. “Is Kane ok?” I asked. “Yes, he will be fine, they are cleaning him up, and he needs a minor surgery but nothing serious.” I nodded, and he smoothed my hair from my face and asked, “and how are you, my dear?” I blushed when he called me that and replied, “I’m better now, seeing him just brought everything back.” I couldn’t bring myself to say his name. Amdis nodded and led me back into the living room. “Would you like to watch a movie?” He asked. “Ok,” I smiled. He got my cuddly kitten he had brought me as an apology when we’d still been at the hotel and gave it to me. I hugged it and snuggled against him while we watched hocus pocus. Michelle came back from work and when she came through the front door, I quickly threw the kitten across the room, making Amdis raise an eyebrow at me. I didn’t want her to see me hugging a teddy at my age. “Hey guys,” she smiled. We both smiled back but neither of us said anything about what had happened today, luckily she was in a rush, so she didn’t notice Amdis or his cuts. “I’m going to see Jeremy and will probably spend the night at his, alright guys?” She called as she rushed up the stairs. “Ok!” I called back. “We can probably return to your home now, but let’s spend one more night here just to be safe,” Amdis said. We watched the rest of the movie, and then I got ready for bed. When we had first arrived, Amdis had obviously been sharing Michelle’s bed with her, but since she had started a new relationship, he had been sleeping on the soft blue sofa, at least I think he slept? It wouldn’t surprise me if he also just did that creepy thing of sitting like some statue unmoving, I wondered what happened when vampires did that, I knew they weren’t sleeping, how did they not get bored. I finished brushing my teeth and went and found Amdis because I really wanted to know. “How do you not get bored just sitting still for hours when you don’t sleep?” “That’s a random question,” he said. “I was thinking about it and was curious.” “It’s complicated to explain, we aren’t asleep but aren’t quite conscious either, we can sort of switch off and yet still be alert enough that danger can’t creep up on us.” “Like zoning out or being in a trance?” “I suppose in a sense, yes.” “You vamps are weird.” “Thank you for that observation, now go get some rest, Rochelle.” “You really are bossy.” “Well apparently if I don’t tell you what to do, you don’t look after yourself.” “I’m going to have to start calling you daddy.” “Please don’t.” “Oh right, your many girlfriends probably call you that in bed.” He ran a hand through his hair and sighed, “just go to bed.” “You didn’t deny it, so they do?” I grinned. I don’t know why I was winding him up, I think if I was honest with myself, I was afraid to be alone, so I was delaying going to bed. “Rochelle, I am not going to talk to you about my love life.” “That is so a yes, do you tie them up and call them princess?” I could see he was both getting annoyed and impatient, and he stood up from the sofa and came over to me. “I do many things with them, now go to sleep.” He spun me around and gently pushed me towards the stairs, forcing me up. That night was the first in a while that I had a night terror, I cried out in fear and was sweating so much the bed was damp with it when Amdis woke me up gently. “My pet, wake up, it is only a dream, you are safe.” I woke up panicked but slowly relaxed seeing Amdis there. He stroked my sweaty hair from my face and sat on my bed beside me. “I shall stay with you, try to get some rest,” he soothed and played with my hair like he always did. I managed to sleep peacefully until morning and the day was pretty uneventful, I trained with Amdis and he called Francesca to come and see me, hoping she could help me get back to a good place. When Michelle came home, we had already packed our things, and we said goodbye to her and thanked her for letting us stay for so long. “Of course, anytime you need me I’ll be there,” she smiled. I hugged her tightly and then left to go back to my own home. It felt so good to just be back home, and I sunk down on to my sofa and sighed in contentment. I unpacked my things and noticed Amdis had cleaned my room and even had my window fixed, it was like the werepanther dude had never existed. I’d been through so much and seen so much I knew I’d sleep fine in here, I wouldn’t be disturbed by the thought that someone had died in here, I was past that with the horrors I’d experienced. The first few days were quiet and peaceful, we mostly watched films together and did shopping. Francesca came over every day the first week to try and help me relearn everything she had taught me, and it was working. On the fourth day of the week, Amdis needed to go out and feed, he felt it was safe for me now to be alone, but he finally gave me his phone number and told me to call him if there were any problems or if I got nervous. When he left, I watched some tv but I grew bored after a while. It had been forever since I had been able to just go out for a nice walk, so I pulled on some leggings, a baby pink t-shirt and pulled on a baby blue hoodie and went out. I was glad I had pulled my hair into a low ponytail because it was really windy today and it was whipping my ponytail in to my face, luckily it wasn’t raining…yet. I wasn’t sure where I wanted to go, in the end I went to the town to look around the shops. It was almost five in the evening, so I didn’t have long before they closed up. It was dark enough outside that the street lamps were on and the shop lights lit up the streets. I checked out the makeup store and bought a new eyeliner. I had been insisting I didn’t need his money from day one but Amdis was very insistent, and so he usually gave me some money to spend on myself, it was incredibly sweet he took such good care of me, it definitely went beyond just his body guarding duties these days, so it was most likely more to do with me being his pet. I went into the book store next and looked around in the fantasy section, I saw a vampire book, it was a romance one, and I couldn’t resist buying it, the character on the cover reminded me of Amdis. It was really dark now, and the shops were starting to close, so slowly I started making my way home. I enjoyed the view of the street all dark and gloomy with the softly glowing lights shining from the shop windows. It was quiet enough I could hear my own feet hitting the wet pavement as I walked, it was lightly raining now. I walked by the restaurants that would stay open probably until about ten at night. I walked past one very posh one and casually glancing inside, my eyes widened when I saw Amdis with some beautiful blonde woman, she was slim and delicate looking and was around five foot ten I would say, she would make a good vampire, even her movements seemed dainty and delicate. I was pretending to look at my phone while I watched them. I would have thought he would do what he had done when I spied on him before, take his date somewhere private to feed on and maybe sleep with her, maybe that was my wishful thinking, I could deal with that better than this. Seeing him treat her like an actual girlfriend, taking her for dinner like he had me, any illusions I might have had that I was the only one he took to a fancy posh restaurant for a date was shattered, I was treated no more special than any of his other girlfriends. They were sitting in a booth, and she cutely tucked her wavy blonde hair behind one ear, laughing at something he said. Pfft, great, he even joked and flirted with them more than he ever had me during our very short time of dating. He leaned in and kissed her on the lips long and slow, I tried to push down the jealousy, but nope, it wasn’t working, I was still jealous. He kissed her with way more passion than he had me too, damn it. When he pulled back, they spoke some more, and then he frowned and looked up and out of the window at me. Crap! He probably felt me close by through our bond. I freaked out so much my phone turned as slippery as a fish and I dropped it, I quickly picked it up, did a little, “eek!” And then ran. I only embarrassed myself further by tripping and did a little run fall but caught myself before I hit the ground, Amdis had probably seen that, but I didn’t look to see, I kept running and didn’t stop until I got home. “Rochelle?” “Crap!” I jumped as I heard his voice in my head. “Relax, I am talking to you through our bond.” “Why doesn’t it hurt like it did with Zedric?” “Zedric cut your emotional and mental ties to him, talking to you this way would have meant him ripping his way into your mind by force. Our bond is complete and how it should be, so there will be no pain.” “Oh,” I replied dumbly. “You should have told me if you were going out today.” “Why? I’m safe now.” I heard him sigh through the bond, and he said, “I still need to know your whereabouts just in case any other danger occurs.” “I’m sorry.” “It is ok, I take it you got home safely?” “Yeah,” I blushed. Thankfully, he didn’t bring up me spying on him for a second time and just said, “good, I shall be back soon.” He closed the link between us, and it was quiet in my mind again. I was still kind of bored, so I went over to my laptop and looked up the website of his job. I scrolled through and saw loads of men and women available for hire, nearly all of them were supernaturals, a few were human, though. I saw Amdis’ profile and read it. Gender: Male Age: over two thousand years old Species: Vampire Profile: I have years and years of experience in combat, I use weapons as well as fight hand-to-hand. I have supernatural gifts to aid me in protecting my clients if needed too. I accept instalment payments. Availability: unavailable right now I liked seeing it say unavailable in red, knowing it was because he was protecting me right now, I’d be sad when it went back to being available, I didn’t want him to leave. I saw a part in the top left hand corner in the section’s part say, ‘could you work for us, do you have what it takes?’ I clicked on it and found myself filling out a form for an application, I was surprised to find that I had almost everything needed to apply, I could fight hand-to-hand now, I could also use a sword pretty good too. Towards the end, it said they offered extra training if needed, and not giving myself time to think about it, I clicked send. Afterwards I whispered, “oops.” I relaxed though, I thought it was highly unlikely I would ever hear back from them, least of all with a yes. I deleted my search history, not that I think Amdis went through my things, but I wouldn’t put it past him if he thought it benefited me and my safety, so just in case I cleared it all.
