Chapter 1: August 2018
It’s August of 2018, I turned 18 last March and I happened to graduate in Senior High School last May too. Last month, I enrolled myself in Artemis University, it’s a private University and the biggest University in my hometown. Although, there are bigger and better Universities in the Capital Region that I wanted to attend, my parents said they could not afford the semestral fees of the Universities in the Capital Region and I’m not mad about it. I understand because my parents are still supporting my 2 younger siblings that are ages 16 and 12. By the way in the culture and country I came from, parents still supports their children financially through college and it’s common that we still live in our parents house even if we’re 18 and considered adults by law. We can basically vote, buy alcohol, and go to night clubs legally but still has to update our parents about our whereabouts and nervously come home if it’s beyond 7pm. Anyway, My First Semester as a freshman college will start next week, I took Bachelors of Science in Psychology and I’m feeling roller coaster of emotions right now because I’m still torn if I should pursue Psychology or transfer to Nursing. As I want to study human thoughts, behaviors, developments, and understand myself, I also worry about my career in the future as my current chosen field doesn’t have a bright career nor being recognized in my culture and country. On the other hand, Nursing has a promising career and a stable financial income although it can make my mental, emotional, and physical state unstable.
“What to do and What to choose? Hmm…”As I muttered to myself and looking to the ceiling of my room, someone called me on my phone.
“Hello” I answered without looking who’s the caller. “Hey Ava, do you know where is the TBA room? It says that our subject University and I is in room TBA” says the person on the other line.
“I honestly don’t know” I replied “But you can visit the University website and email them where’s TBA I guess” I added
“But I’m kinda embarrassed to do that but never mind, we’ll figure it out I guess when we’re there I hope” said the person on the other line “Thanks for the help, I hung up now. Bye, see you next week” then the person hung up.
The person on I was talking to earlier was my middle school friend Serena. She’ll be attending to the same university and program I’m enrolled. We’re both in the same block too so our schedule is the same.
“Did I made the right choice?…l’m hoping that I did” I didn’t know that choosing your major would be hard if you’re torn between your passion and financial stability in the future.
I got up and walked into the kitchen and prepared for dinner for my family. I’m the eldest child and in my culture if you’re the eldest and a female, you’re expected to become your mother’s substitute to household chores and responsibilities as she attends to her job. My parents both have the same job and their jobs requires them to go to other regions and cities that makes them unable to come home everyday. Due to the the nature of their work, my siblings and I grew up in different cares of nannies.
Throughout the years, I was able to witness my parents marriage and it was chaotic. They never seen together often and it’s probably a good cause my parents always clash as they see each other, then after they fought, their anger will be displaced towards us. In addition, I’m not close to my younger siblings too especially with my 16 year old brother as he did an awful and traumatizing act to me when we were younger. While the reason for why I’m not close with my youngest sister is probably due to our 6 years age gap.
As I’m done preparing things for dinner, I heard small meows from the outside of the kitchen. As I go out to observed, I saw a kitten in our neighbors pavement. It was still a newborn and I know I don’t know how to care of one but on the other hand, I couldn’t ignore the kitten’s pleading meow”
“What should I do” As I muttered frustratedly
