The Attack

I crouched, hiding, my nose threatening to let out a sneeze. Damn things why couldn't they be something I wasn't allergic to? I pushed aside one branch holding a hand firmly against my mouth and nose. I would not let some stupid plant get the best of me. Never ever will I plant one of these in my own gardens, I promised myself. A felt a twig shove itself further down my back making a shallow scratch on my shoulder as I shifted my position. Currently I was watching Logan who sat on the bench we had planned to meet at in the park, through the leaves of a large bush. He was wearing a navy blue leather jacket and ripped black jeans. Whoever said no one could wear navy and black together certainly had it wrong. I can't deny that he looked good. Just because he was my enemy doesn't mean I couldn't admire him from afar. But he kept checking his phone. As if I would text him- we didn't even have each other's phone numbers yet. Not that I wanted it, the boy was my arch-nemesis. But I was late, and surprise surprise I wasn't exactly planning on showing up the way he thought. He thought that I needed to be told the rules of this war- ha! As if that stupid prank he pulled yesterday hadn't been explanatory enough. And now it was my turn. I was going to make my own rules, because you know what ANYTHING GOES. At least that was what I was going with. The principle had made it clear yesterday in his stuffy carpeted office that he knew his son was a rebel, but he wasn't going to stop him. Of course he hadn't said it like that, but he knew about Logan's bead filling locker extravaganza and had given him detention. He wasn't totally unfair. But he warned me not to do anything back. AS IF. That man needed to learn a thing or two about warfare. Warfare, as Kayla said, was not just one side pulling out their guns. My phone binged telling me I had a message and I silently cursed. I was supposed to go unnoticed in these bushes. Things had to go smoothly if this was going to pan out and that meant phones went on silent. I'm forgetful. I'm in position. Are you and Jordon good too? Kayla had texted. I responded with a yes and yes, locating Jordon across the courtyard with the statue. His back faced Logan, while Logan's back faced me. Ridiculously enough, Jordon had insisted on wearing sunglasses too. His hand laid on what he called a satchel, but both me and Kayla knew what it was- a man's purse. We hadn't stopped laughing for a good solid five minutes before he had stomped out of the room, his denial not loud enough to be heard over our giggles. But it was inside the thing that our deadly weapon on the ambush was held. Similarly sitting beside me in the bushes was my own purse filled to its limit. I'm sure Kayla's looked the same. This was going to be good. I sent a double text to Jordon and Kayla telling them that in about five seconds I would be giving them the signal and that they could attack. With a sense of finality ringing through my body and an excitement gripping me I jumped up out of the bushes behind Logan's bench. My rustling made him turn slightly but not soon enough before I let out the signal- a loud and b****y war-cry. I saw Kayla jump down from a tree branch and Jordon turned around from his spot as I started running each of us pulling out our weapon. Shaving cream. I squirted my can directly at his bewildered face, covering his crazy expression. Oh this was fun. He cried out and jumped up ready to tackle me. I squeaked out in surprise but Jordon came to my rescue pouring some directly down his jacket and back. Kayla then barged in from the side washing his legs in a nice white spray. He thrashed around trying to hit anything, or anyone, but failed his eyes still shut, to keep the burning away.  "Ha! Take that! And THAT! Annnd THAT." Jordon yelled. Maybe he was getting into this a little too much.  "You wanted war, hey? Well now you get it, face the consequences buddy!" I shouted in wicked glee. Kayla paused to give me a look and I shrugged hastily not caring that I was getting into this a little too much too. I then proceeded to take out my second can and spray a huge lump on to his hair, rubbing it in, avoiding his wild limbs as best as I could. Oh he was mad now. That always seemed to happen near the end of our encounters. I paused a minute, but quickly found out that was a bad idea.  Logan's eyes popped open his big brown irises stormy, and locking his gaze on me he charged.  "Ahhghhhhhggghggggg," We both cried. I ran as fast as I could my legs pumping back and forth. I ran out of the courtyard with the statue of George Washington where we were waging war, and past a lovely couple. They jumped out of my way scared by the fluffy white beast behind me and my wildly, psychotic laughter that escaped my lips. I continued into the small forest to the left, thinking I was almost to freedom, but I wasn't fast enough. He tackled me, pushing me onto the soft green grass in between two big trees. I took in a deep breath, scared of whatever was about to happen. Taking my wrists he shoved my arms above my head and kept them there locked in place by his tight grip. But oh man was he heavy, I was having a hard time breathing. That didn't stop me from taking a deep breath, though, when he leaned in really close. What was he doing? Oh my gosh. But instead he put his lips close to my ear his minty breath fanning my hair and whispered. "I told you, you needed to learn the rules. Obviously, you still know nothing. But now I'll have to let you figure it out yourself." But as he pulled back I said, "I don't give a crap about your stupid rules, Logan. In my world of war anything goes. You had better get used to it. Even if I do learn your rules I won't be using them." Yes I was a stubborn donkey he should get used to it. "It doesn't matter how you play the game because I'll win. I always get my prize." His whispered his eyes fierce. How on earth was I supposed to take that?  I thought. I opened my mouth to reply when Kayla charged through into our view yelling, "I'll save you London!" Instead she covered not only Logan's messy hair with the fluffy white cream, but my face too. I shut my mouth hastily and screwed my eyes shut tightly. There goes the little bit of makeup I actually tried to wear today. I heard Kayla's gasp as she saw the damage she had wrought. Some friend, well I knew she was but even with her big auburn curls she was a blonde at heart.  "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry!" Logan snorted at her comment pushing himself off of me and stood up. He didn't even offer me a hand up, how rude. Well, I did know he was no gentlemen.  "I didn't mean I was sorry for you. You deserved every ounce of this, you a*s," She said. That's when Jordon came crashing into the scene. "Oh my gosh, Kayla!" He cried seeing my face covered in cream. I did my best to wipe away the foamy stuff but knew I was just making it worse. Then Jordon shook his head as if to remind himself of something. "Oh it doesn't matter. Logan, you need to leave, Adam's on his way," The other two became nervous at the comment, but my face scrunched together in confusion. Logan looked down, his shirt slipping slightly so that I could see his intricate tattoo a little clearer.  "Stupidity doesn't look good on you honey, maybe you should try something else for once," I scoffed at him and a sassy remark sat ready to fire on my lips but he walked away and was gone in less than a minute.  "What is the deal with Adam and Logan?" I asked wanting to know, and blowing off his last words.  Jordon picked up his phone ignoring me, and started to call Ryan, "Hey yeah, so the get-away car isn't needed anymore. We completed the mission and all but Adam texted me saying he found out we were here and wanted to hang out with us, so he's on his way now. Sorry about that. Hey, hey hey, you're not useless, Ryan, you just got the easiest job. You did say that you didn't want to be any where near the fight." As he continued to argue with Ryan I couldn't help but think, What? Has this become mission impossible six, now? I didn't know I could replace Tom Cruise. Cool.   I looked at Kayla expectantly, but she focused on her shoes, not really wanting to explain. She glanced up once, though, and it was enough for her to break. I was innocent, I guess, only to this knowledge and event, but I needed to know what I was getting in the middle of.  "Oh, darling are you sure you want to know?" She asked. I nodded and so she continued crouching down beside me offering me her sweater so that I could wipe off my face. Jordon shut off his phone finally, and walked over joining us. "Well, you see Adam and Logan actually used to be friends. They always were together, getting in trouble together, sometimes getting in fights together, but always teetering on the edge of going to far. Then one day, Logan did. Go too far that is. He got involved with a g**g group, looking for a pack of joints to smoke, and he didn't pay his dealer. It got bad, he got beat up- more than once- and he called on Adam to help. Adam didn't want to help and that's what started it all. They had always had each other's back but this time it was too much. But, Adam, being as amazing as he is did eventually help. But there was some price, that nobody really knows about. Something that put a wedge between them. Something that Adam did that Logan hated. That thing that he had done Logan hated and eventually made him hate the one who did it. And that was only year ago. I don't know if Logan's still involved with that g**g either, so don't ask."  My eyes went wide as she spoke and suddenly, I didn't feel so safe as I had before when thinking of Adam. He had said I was like a sister to him, and for me he was like brother, that was true, but brothers could still beat you up, they were not always innocent. I knew he wouldn't hurt me, but what lengths would he go for me, like he did Logan? I wanted to ask more but Kayla could see the curiosity was going to lead to dark places and shut me down.  "Please, do me a favour and don't ask questions, or look into it either, okay? You need to stay safe, and out of his past. Because that is all it is and where it is- the past. Now, do you want to go find the public washrooms to wash up?" She tried to end on a light note but even the sky looked grey around me.  "You shouldn't have said anything, Kayla." And there Adam stood a dark look on his face, eye flashing with a hint of anger. Kayla immediately blushed, but then whitened in fear. Apparently, she knew that look of anger well.  "Don't hurt her, she only told me what I wouldn't stop asking about." I suddenly spoke up defending her.  Adam then looked surprised. "I wasn't going to hurt her, London. Has my past now made you think I would?" He seemed sad.  "No, that doesn't matter, right? Kayla even said all that is- the past, let's keep it that way." He nodded in agreement finally seeing there was no need to get worked up over this.  "So, I did come here to hang out with you guys but know all I want to know is, why, London, are you holding a shaving cream can, and covered in the stuff?" I laughed nervously. Crap oh crap.  "How about we go home so I can take a shower then I'll explain," I evaded. Evasion, always. Evasion was the key to every.  "Alright, We'll drop Kayla off at home, and then we can make it back just a half an hour before diner. Then you can explain." Adam concluded.  Ha, like hell I will. I'll think of something before then, just you wait and see.
