The Bear Growled
Snow fell like goose feathers, draping the entire mountain forest in a thick coat of silver.
Two sturdy steeds treaded through the pristine white snow, leisurely making their way through the woods. Upon the horses sat a man and a woman. The man, appearing around thirty years of age, possessed a resolute face. He wore brown leather armor, and a silver round shield was strapped to his right arm. The woman, draped in a red sable fur coat, had a petite frame and still held the appearance of a girl, but her snow-white skin and exquisite features marked her as a budding beauty. The two let their horses wander at will through the snow, moving slowly.
A snowflake drifted down beside the girl's cheek. She reached out and caught it. Opening her palm, the snowflake, instead of melting, crystallized into a pale blue, six-petaled ice flower. The girl was overjoyed. She showed the ice flower to the man: "Brother Fei, look."
The man called "Brother Fei" glanced at the ice flower and said flatly, "The snow of the Taya Ice Plains is no child's toy. It devours everything, including fear."
The girl, full of delight, had wanted to show her "creation" to Brother Fei, but he was utterly indifferent. She puffed up her cheeks angrily and said, "I am no child! I am already sixteen this year!" With that, she crushed the ice flower and tossed it away. The ice bloom shattered into glittering fragments, scattering across the snow.
Seeing the girl's anger, Brother Fei reined his horse to a stop and said gently, "Right, it's my fault. You are sixteen, no longer a little girl."
The girl also halted her horse, lowered her head, and said, "Brother Fei Tuo, from now on, don't treat me like a little girl anymore, alright?"
Fei Tuo watched as a faint rouge color bloomed beneath her snow-white skin, her eyelashes slightly lowered, a display of shy charm fully revealed. His chest tightened involuntarily, and he chuckled softly, "Alright, you are a true princess of the pure spring now, no longer a little girl who clings and acts spoiled in her mother's arms..." He suddenly felt his words were inappropriate and stopped short.
The girl's whole body trembled slightly, and the expression on her face instantly froze.
Fei Tuo's face was full of apology: "Sister Ming Yue, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have mentioned your mother..."
Ming Yue looked up, tears rolling around in her bright, clear eyes. Fei Tuo gently stroked the girl's back and comforted her: "Your mother rests peacefully among the mountains, accompanied by sunlight and white clouds. Don't be too sad."
Ming Yue choked out, "Brother Fei, do you think people really have souls after they die?"
Fei Tuo was stumped by the question. After a long while, he finally answered, "I've heard that when people die, their souls rise to the sky and become stars, watching over their children in the dark night. So, every night, when you look up at the star-filled sky, you can see your mother, and she will also be watching you from above."
"Then what about during the day? There are no stars in the sky then. Does that mean I can't see Mother?"
"During the day, the stars still exist, you just can't see them. You see now, although you can't see your mother, she is watching you from the sky."
Ming Yue raised her head, looking at the gloomy sky: "Really? Is Mother really watching me?"
Fei Tuo wiped the tears from the corner of her eye: "Yes, so don't let your mother see your sorrow."
Ming Yue's red lips trembled slightly, revealing a faint smile. She waved towards the sky and said loudly, "Mother, I am well! Brother Fei is taking me to the Rose Academy. I will become an outstanding sorceress!"
Fei Tuo saw Ming Yue's mood improve, and a smile appeared on his face. He looked up and said, "No matter what happens, I will always stay by your side and protect you."
"Roar! Roar! Roar!" A tremendous sound echoed through the mountain forest.
Both of them were startled. Fei Tuo quickly looked around, searching for the source of the noise.
Ming Yue said in terror, "Brother Fei, what... what's happening?"
Fei Tuo frowned: "Sounds like a bear's roar, or perhaps a mountain snow beast."
"Let's run, quickly."
"Yes, no time to lose. Hurry!" Fei Tuo lashed his riding crop on the rump of Ming Yue's horse, and the two steeds galloped away. They had only run a few steps when a "whoosh" sound was heard. An arrow flew from behind. Fei Tuo judged the direction by the sound and pressed Ming Yue's head down. The arrow grazed past Ming Yue's head and buried itself in the snow ahead. At this, both horses were spooked simultaneously, raising their front hooves and coming to a stop. Fei Tuo pulled the reins of Ming Yue's horse with one hand and reined his own horse with the other. Then, he turned, drew his longsword, and shouted towards the forest behind: "Who's playing tricks back there?"
Through the trees, two figures and a massive white creature vaguely appeared. Fei Tuo was about to look closer when a second arrow flew towards him. He blocked it with his right-hand shield, and then a third arrow tore through the air.
The opponent was firing arrows in quick succession, clearly aiming to kill them both. Furious, Fei Tuo used his shield to deflect the third arrow while simultaneously spurring his horse towards the figures. As the horse galloped, a fourth arrow flew, aimed at the horse's lower body. Fei Tuo knocked the arrow down with his sword. By now, his horse had reached close quarters. He saw a white-haired elder and a young man in black, a white bear following behind them. The young man in black held a crossbow; he was the archer.
Seeing Fei Tuo approach, the man in black shot another arrow. Fei Tuo smashed it aside with his shield and slashed his sword towards the man. The man parried with his crossbow. The two clashed, exchanging blows back and forth. After a few moves, Fei Tuo gained the upper hand, pressing his attack continuously, while the man in black retreated steadily.
"Roar!" As the man in black retreated, the white bear behind him roared and lunged at Fei Tuo. Fei Tuo's mount, frightened by the bear's roar, turned and retreated. Fei Tuo made a split-second decision, flipping off the horse's back. The white bear swung a giant paw at him. Fei Tuo raised his silver shield to block, simultaneously thrusting his sword towards the black-clothed man's chest. The man in black couldn't dodge in time and had to block with his arm. A ripping sound was heard as a gash was torn in his right arm, and his crossbow fell to the ground.
The white bear pounded its huge paws against the silver shield repeatedly. Fei Tuo felt his internal organs shake from the impacts. Seeing that he had wounded his opponent, he rolled away on the ground, dodging another attack from the white bear.
"Bang!" The white bear's giant paw slammed onto the snow, sending dozens of snow clumps flying.
Fei Tuo panted heavily. Although the white bear's heavy blows hadn't injured him, they had left him drained of strength. He knelt on one knee, pointing his sword at the opposing duo and the bear with his left hand. Only now did he get a clear look at his opponents' appearance. The elder had white hair and beard, looking hale and hearty, possessing an almost sage-like, otherworldly air. The man in black was slender, with a fair complexion and rather handsome features. As for the bear, it was actually a black bear. Initially, the snow covering its coat made it seem white, but during the fight, the snow clumps had shaken off, revealing its true dark fur color.
The man in black put his finger in his mouth and blew a sharp whistle. The black bear roared again and charged at Fei Tuo. Fei Tuo, seeing the bear's clumsy movements, slashed his sword towards its legs, intending to bring it down in one strike. Unexpectedly, the bear's leg hide was thick and tough. The sword merely scratched the surface fur. The black bear kicked out fiercely, and a powerful force struck Fei Tuo. Unable to maintain his grip with his left hand, his longsword flew backwards. Having lost his longsword, Fei Tuo was forced to go on the defensive. The black bear swung its paws several times in succession, pushing Fei Tuo into a desperate, scrambling defense."Brother Fei!" Ming Yue had ridden closer. Seeing Fei Tuo locked in combat with a huge black bear, her heart was filled with both fear and worry.
Fei Tuo caught sight of Ming Yue approaching, and extreme anxiety filled his heart: "Danger! Get away, quickly!"
The wounded man in black grabbed his fallen crossbow from the snow and shot an arrow towards Ming Yue.
Fei Tuo was in the thick of battle with the black bear. Seeing the man pick up his bow and shoot, he was unable to turn back to help. All he could do was shout continuously: "Ming Yue, run! Ming Yue, run!"
Ming Yue saw the arrow flying towards her, but she just sat frozen on her horse, not knowing how to dodge.
