I nod my head as I say. "I won't let you down. See you there."
After grabbing a coffee, I head over to Monique to see what patients were waiting for me.
"Hello Monique, how are you tonight? Doctor Owens says I am on my own tonight. Do you have a list of patients for me?"
"Hi Nicole, that is great news. Of course, here you go." Monique says handing me a list of patients.
I check my list of patients. It’s mostly familiar names from earlier shifts, plus a handful of new admissions from earlier today. The night team hand off is detailed, and I can see they’re doing their best to prepare me for whatever might come. But things don’t always go according to plan here. I'm quickly realizing that’s the reality of medicine.
