Chapter 1
Nicole's pov
I am still sleeping soundly in bed when I hear a noise. I slowly open my eyes and look over at my clock on the bedside table. I blink twice just to make sure I am seeing the time correctly. I jolt out of bed. How did I sleep through my alarm I think to myself.
"Oh s**t I'm going to be so late and on my first day" I rush around my apartment to get dressed, hoping to make it to the hospital on time.
For such a small town, traffic can be a real b***h. Everyone is on their way to work, and they forget how to drive, so a five-minute drive turns into a fifteen-minute drive.
I make it to the hospital just in time to hear Dr. Owens give the residents their assignments for the day.
"Miss Nash, punctual as always, I see. Since you don't seem to think showing up on time is important, you can help nurse Monique to discharge patients" Dr Owens says in an annoyed tone, and walks away, shaking his head.
"Great, if he did not hate me before, he certainly does now." I think out loud.
"Don't take it too personally, he just lives for his work. Just do your job and you will be fine. Come on, let's get started." Monique says grabbing some files and walking off to the first room.
Six hours later and only halfway through my first shift I already feel exhausted. Who knew that discharging patients and listening to paranoid people with absolutely no reason to be at the hospital could be so exhausting? I did not spend seven years in school to do this and miss out on all the action.
Suddenly the front door bursts open with great force and a patient covered in blood is rushed into the VIP wing of the hospital.
"How is that man even alive, he has lost so much blood? What even causes that much damage, a wood chipper?" I ask in disbelief after the man disappears through the doors.
That man had the most horrific wounds I have ever seen. Those slashes were so big and deep I swear I could see glimpses of bone. And I am pretty sure there were bite marks too, maybe he was attacked by a bear or something big. Just thinking back to his wounds makes my stomach turn. I shake my head to get the image of his wounds out of my head so I can continue with my work.
Moments later the most attractive man I has ever seen bursts through the door on a mission towards the VIP doors, but just before he enters he stops in his track and turns to look me dead in my eyes. Shakes his head, turns and disappears behind the doors.
That was the most exciting or maybe weird is the better word part of the shift. I spend my next six hours doing even more paperwork before heading home.
Once I got home I was so drained I fell face down on the couch and just laid there.
"Aaww Nic!! You are back, how was your first day, tell me everything!!" My roommate, Abby, starts yelling as soon as she sees me on the couch.
"Abby keep it down! Why are you yelling?"
"Oh come on. I am your best friend and roommate and I have stood by you for seven years of school and studying. I think I deserve to know how your first day went."
"It was very boring and I am sure my attending doctor hates me. He had me doing paperwork all day. And then something weird happened, but I might have just imagined that part."
"Well I think your attending is an ass and an i***t. You're a great doctor not a secretary. I'm sure soon he'll see how amazing you are. But you do know you will have to elaborate about that skeptical weird part right?"
"Well to start it of a man was brought in with the strangest injuries and so much blood loss. I am still not sure how he was even still alive. They rushed him into the VIP wing which is off limits to most people."
"Okay, maybe he is someone famous who got in an accident. I am not seeing the weird part."
"I wasn't finished. That was not the weird part. A few moments later the most attractive man I have ever seen entered the hospital and just walked straight through the VIP wing doors and no one even tried talking to him or stopping him. Then, and here comes the weird part, right before he entered the VIP wing he looked me right in the eyes and then just walked off shaking his head."
Chuckling Abby shrugged.
"Maybe you were so tired you were hallucinating."
"Thank you for the vote of confidence. Some best friend you are."
"I am just kidding. Maybe he thought that he recognized you or that you were hot."
"I guess that's possible."
"Great, now that that's sorted, what are you wearing to the bonfire?"
"Bonfire? What bonfire?"
"Come on I have been talking about the bonfire for like a week. Please!"
"I am not going anywhere tonight. I am tired."
"You just said you only did paperwork today. Come on it will be fun! Don't make me go alone. You drag me to your boring doctor parties all the time."
"They are not boring and you said you liked going with me."
"Nic, be honest, they are extremely boring. Yes, I said I like going with you because there is free booze and food and have you seen some of the men at those parties?"
"Fine. I'll go with you but I am not getting all dressed up."
"Works for me besides, you would look great in a plastic bag too. Now come on get your ass up so we can go!"
"Just let me shower first so I can wash off this hospital smell."
"Of course it is not like I am going in these clothes either."
I get off the couch to go take a shower. As I enters my room I hear ringing from my laptop on the desk. I walk over to my desk to see who is calling me. My mother is video calling me, she probably also wants to know about the first day at the hospital. I sit down on my chair and answer the call.
"Hi, honey how are you feeling?"
"Hi, mom I am a little tired but other than that I am fine. How are you and dad?"
"We are doing fine nothing new with us. So how was our first day at the hospital, did you get to do anything exciting?"
"My first day was not so great. I barely made it on time for my shift. So my attending doctor saw it fit to strand me with discharging patients and doing paper work."
"I am sorry honey. I am sure the next shift will be great, just be early this time. Did you get to work with some patients at least?"
"I did talk to the patients that were being discharged but mostly just to explain the discharge papers. And then I got to deal with all the walk-in patients that did not really need medical attention."
My dad walks up to my mother and joins our call.
"Hi sweetie, I over heard your conversation with your mom. I am sorry that you did not get to work with patients today, but you can only go up from here. Just make sure to be early and do your best for your next shift and you will do great."
"Thank you dad. Next shift I will be there before my attending doctor and show him that I deserve this residency."
"That's my girl. I have to go I just wanted to tell you that as long as you show up and do your part you will do great. Goodbye."
"I should go to I just wanted to hear about your first day. Goodbye honey."
"Thank you mom and dad. I will call you again next week." With that I end the call with my parents and stands up to go shower.
I walk into the bathroom to take a shower and wash away the day. As I showers my mind wonders back to the attractive stranger from the hospital. I wonder if he is from around here and if I will ever see him again. I shake the thought from my head and continue my shower.
After my shower I head to my room and to get dressed. I go through my cupboard looking for my favorite dress. This black dress is so comfortable and best of all it has pockets. Just as I have the dress on Abby burst through the door with arms full of clothes.
"I don't know what to wear!" Abby sighs dramatically.
"Ooh I am sure we will find something in this heap of clothes." I say laughing at my best friend.
"Don't patronize me I don't look good in everything I wear unlike you." Abby says pointing at my outfit.
"Okay. What do you feel like wearing a dress or maybe a nice top with pants or a skirt?"
"Let's go with pants and a top. I don't feel like wearing a dress"
"Great"
After four outfit changes Abby is finally ready to leave for the bonfire. We gather all our things and head out the door.
