The problem with seeing Nina again was that it made forgetting impossible.
For five years, I had convinced myself that time would eventually do what determination could not. I had believed that enough distance, enough work, and enough distractions would dull the memory of what we once had. It sounded reasonable in theory. Most people eventually moved on from heartbreak.
I never did.
The realization followed me everywhere after our afternoon by the river.
