CHAPTER FOUR: THE RETURN OF CHIBUIKE

890 Words
After many years away, Chibuike finally returned to Nigeria. His journey had been long—marked by pain, survival, and transformation. From the dark days of imprisonment to the unexpected mercy that restored his freedom, life had taken him through paths he had never imagined. But Chibuike was not a man who remained broken. When he regained his freedom, he left the country in search of a new beginning. In foreign lands, he worked tirelessly, building connections and learning the trade of gold and precious minerals. Through determination, discipline, and resilience, he gradually built a thriving business that extended across borders, particularly in parts of Asia. Years passed. And now… he was home. As the plane touched down, Chibuike gazed out the window, his expression calm but reflective. Nigeria. The land he once left behind. The land that still held his memories… and the only family he truly had. His sister—Gift. She had been his strength through everything. Even in his darkest moments, the thought of her had kept him going. Stepping out of the airport, Chibuike carried himself with quiet confidence. He was no longer the same man who had left years ago. There was something different about him now—an aura of wealth, experience, and control. Yet beneath it all, his heart remained unchanged. As his car moved through the busy streets, memories flooded his mind. The struggles. The sacrifices. The survival. And now… success. Gift lived in a modest apartment. Life had not been easy for her either, but she had endured. That afternoon, she was at home when she heard a knock on the door. “Who is it?” she called out. There was no response. Curious, she walked to the door and opened it slowly. The moment her eyes met the man standing there, she froze. For a few seconds, she couldn’t speak. “Chibuike…” she whispered. A soft smile appeared on his face. “Yes… it’s me.” Tears filled her eyes instantly. Without hesitation, she rushed forward and held him tightly. “You’re alive… you’re really alive,” she cried. Chibuike held her gently. “I’m here,” he said quietly. For a long moment, they remained in each other’s arms—reunited after years of separation. Inside, they sat together, talking endlessly. Gift kept staring at him, as if afraid he might disappear again. “You’ve changed,” she said softly. Chibuike gave a faint smile. “Life changed me.” She noticed the details—the expensive wristwatch, the calm confidence, the way he carried himself with quiet authority. “You’re doing well now,” she added. “I’ve been working,” he replied simply. He didn’t boast. That wasn’t who he was. But it was clear—he had built something significant. After a moment of hesitation, Gift spoke again. “There’s something I need to tell you.” Chibuike looked at her attentively. “What is it?” She smiled shyly. “I’m married.” He raised his brows slightly. “Married?” She nodded. “And… I’m pregnant.” For a brief moment, Chibuike was silent. Then a warm smile spread across his face. He stood up and embraced her again. “That’s good news,” he said sincerely. “I’m happy for you.” Just then, her husband stepped into the room. Chibuike greeted him respectfully, extending a firm handshake. “Take care of my sister,” he said. “I will,” the man replied. Later that evening, as they sat together, Chibuike looked around the apartment. It was neat, but modest. He grew quiet for a moment before speaking. “Gift… you deserve more than this.” She looked at him, confused. “What do you mean?” Chibuike leaned forward slightly. “You’re about to have a child,” he said. “You need comfort. Proper care. A better environment.” She understood immediately. “Chibuike…” “I want you to relocate,” he said calmly. “To Canada.” Her eyes widened. “That’s a big step.” “I know,” he replied. “But I’ll handle everything.” Her husband looked equally surprised. “You would do that for us?” Chibuike nodded without hesitation. “You’re my family.” Within weeks, everything was set in motion. Using his international connections, Chibuike arranged their visas, processed travel documents, and secured a comfortable place for them abroad. He ensured Gift would receive proper medical care in one of the best hospitals in Canada. Everything was done swiftly and efficiently. On the day of their departure, Gift couldn’t hold back her tears. “You’ve done so much for me,” she said. Chibuike smiled gently. “You stood by me when I had nothing. This is the least I can do.” She hugged him tightly. “Thank you,” she whispered. As he stood watching their plane take off, Chibuike remained still. For the first time in years, he felt a deep sense of fulfillment. He had lost time. He had lost peace. But he had not lost his heart. Now, he was back in Nigeria. Not as a broken man… But as a man rebuilt by experience. A man ready for whatever life had ahead. And unknown to him… His destiny was only just beginning.
