CHAPTER ONE – THE MAN CALLED ODOGWU WHITE
In the eastern part of Nigeria, there lived a man whose name carried weight everywhere he went. His name was Chibuike, but most people knew him as Chibyke. To many others, he was famously called Odogwu White. The nickname came from his unique lifestyle. Chibyke loved wearing white clothes — spotless white suits, white shoes, and sometimes even white traditional attire. His love for the color did not stop there. His garage was filled with expensive white cars that attracted attention wherever they passed. Chibyke was not only known for his wealth but also for his generosity. During festive seasons, he distributed food to the poor and provided financial support to many families in need. Every year, he paid school fees for several orphaned children and sponsored many young people through university. People admired him deeply. Many believed he was a blessing to the community. His businesses were both local and international. He traveled frequently between countries, including China and Canada. He was involved in trading gold and diamonds. He also owned several companies that worked closely with government agencies on large projects. Despite his success and popularity, there was one thing many people didn’t knew about him — his painful past. Only one person truly knew the full story of how he became the man he was today. That person was his elder sister, Gift. One evening, Chibyke sat in his luxurious bed when his phone rang. It was a video call. On the other side of the phone was his sister, Gift. She smiled warmly before handing the phone to her children. “Uncle! Uncle!” the children shouted excitedly as they took turns speaking with him. They loved their uncle deeply and sometimes even called him Daddy because of how much he cared for them. Chibyke laughed happily as he listened to them talk. Those moments always reminded him of their childhood and where he came from. After talking with them he hung off. * * * Many years ago, life had been completely different. Chibyke and Gift had lost their parents at a very young age. With no relatives willing to take care of them, or take them in. They were taken to an orphanage where they spent several difficult years. Life in the orphanage was hard but manageable. However, when Gift turned above eighteen, she was required to leave. But while living, she left with her brother Chibuike Suddenly, they were left alone to survive in the street of Enugu State. Gift, who was four years older than Chibuike, took the responsibility of caring for her younger brother. Every day she went to busy motor parks in Enugu to sell pure water and Gala snacks so they could have something to eat. Many nights they slept hungry. But Gift never complained. She always encouraged him. “Don’t worry, Chibuike,” she would say. “One day our lives will change.” Seeing her suffering broke his heart. One night, Chibyke returned home and looked at his sister — tired and thin from hawking under the scorching sun. At that moment, he knew he had to change their situation.
