CHAPTER SIX - Entering His World

752 Words
Bella left Damian’s office feeling like she’d stepped out of one world and into another entirely. Her heels clicked against the marble floor, each step echoing like a reminder that she wasn’t in her safe, predictable life anymore. She had agreed—reluctantly, cautiously—to the job, but the reality of working under Damian Romano, in his orbit, in his world, was heavier than she had anticipated. The elevator doors closed behind her with a soft ding, and she exhaled slowly, trying to steady her racing heart. I can do this, she told herself. It’s just a job. He’s just a man. A dangerous man, yes, but just a man. She hated that the thought of him lingered like smoke in her mind. She hated that she could still feel the warmth of his presence, the subtle pull of his gaze, even though he wasn’t in the room. --- Later that day — Damian’s inner circle Damian Romano wasn’t the type of man who left things to chance. Bella quickly realized this when he escorted her through the labyrinthine corridors of his company—a sprawling empire that combined high finance, real estate, and something else, something darker that Bella wasn’t sure she wanted to understand just yet. The doors opened to a room that smelled of polished wood and faint leather, where a handful of men and women moved with precision, efficiency, and respect. “This is my team,” Damian said, voice calm but commanding, as if announcing a king to his court. “Everyone here knows you’ll be working closely with me. Observe. Learn. Don’t speak unless spoken to. But understand this…” He stepped closer to Bella, his gaze locking on hers. “…I do not tolerate mistakes, disloyalty, or weakness. Not in my employees. Not in myself.” Bella swallowed. The tension in the room was palpable. Every person she passed seemed to study her, measuring her, testing her. She felt exposed, as though she’d stepped into an arena where every move mattered. “I… understand,” she said softly, her voice barely audible over the subtle hum of the office. Damian nodded once, almost imperceptibly. “Good. Then let’s begin.” He led her to a sleek workstation, handing her a tablet and a folder with documents that detailed his latest deals, properties, and contacts. “Learn this,” he said. “Memorize the names, the places, the stakes. One mistake could cost someone their life.” Bella’s stomach twisted. “Life?” Damian’s eyes darkened. “This world isn’t safe. The business isn’t clean. But if you survive it… you will become indispensable.” --- The first task Her first assignment was to prepare a detailed schedule for Damian’s meetings for the week. Sounds simple—but Bella quickly realized nothing about working in his world was simple. Every contact, every appointment, carried weight, and every word could trigger consequences she couldn’t yet comprehend. Hours passed. She worked meticulously, double-checking everything, her fingers flying across the tablet as she tried not to think about the man who had been both her temptation and her torment. And then Damian appeared behind her. “You’re meticulous,” he said softly, almost approvingly. “But meticulous isn’t enough in my world. You must anticipate.” Bella swallowed. “Anticipate?” “Yes. Anticipate problems, anticipate questions, anticipate dangers before they reach you. That’s how you survive.” She felt heat rise to her cheeks, partly from embarrassment and partly from the nearness of him. He leaned slightly closer, just enough that she could feel the warmth radiating from his body. Her pulse betrayed her again, thudding in a rhythm she couldn’t control. “You’re… very aware,” he said, his voice dropping slightly, like a private comment meant only for her. Bella swallowed hard, heart racing. “I—I try.” Damian’s gaze held hers for a long moment, intense, unreadable, almost… intimate. Then, without a word, he turned and walked away, leaving her trembling slightly at the desk. --- After hours When the office emptied, Bella remained at her workstation, reviewing every detail she had prepared. Damian’s world was intoxicating, dangerous, and alluring all at once. She knew one thing clearly: she could survive here—if she kept her wits about her. But something told her survival wasn’t enough. Something told her she wanted more… More of him. More of this dangerous pull. And deep down, she knew it was only the beginning. ---
