Chapter 1: The Night Everything Broke
📖 Chapter 1: The Night Everything Broke Rain poured like the sky had finally given up. Ava stood on the edge of the sidewalk, her thin jacket soaked through, her hands trembling—not from the cold, but from the words still echoing in her head. "You should’ve died instead." Her breath hitched. She didn’t turn around. She couldn’t. If she did, she might break completely—and she had promised herself she wouldn’t do that again. Not tonight. Not ever. Cars rushed past, their headlights blurring into streaks of white and gold. The city didn’t care. It never did. People moved on, laughed, lived… while she stood frozen in a moment that refused to let her go. Ava clenched her fists. “Move forward,” she whispered to herself. “Just move forward.” But her feet wouldn’t listen. Because forward meant letting go. And letting go meant accepting that everything she had lost… was truly gone. A loud horn blared. Ava snapped back to reality just as a car sped toward her, water splashing violently across the road. For a second—just one second—she didn’t move. Maybe this was it. Maybe the universe was giving her an easy way out. But then— A strong hand grabbed her arm and yanked her back. Hard. Her body slammed into someone’s chest, and the world spun. The car sped past, missing her by inches. “Are you trying to die?” a deep voice snapped. Ava gasped, her heart pounding violently against her ribs. “I—” Her voice shook. “I didn’t—” “Didn’t what?” he cut in sharply. “Didn’t notice a car? Or didn’t care?” She froze. Slowly, she looked up. And for a moment… everything went silent. He was tall—easily towering over her—with dark, rain-soaked hair falling slightly over his sharp eyes. His jaw was tight, his expression unreadable, but there was something about him… something dangerous. Cold. Like he had built walls so high, no one could ever reach him. Ava stepped back, pulling her arm away. “I’m fine,” she said quickly, avoiding his gaze. “You don’t look fine.” His voice was calmer now—but somehow more intense. Ava forced a small laugh. “Well, I am.” Lie. He didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he studied her, his eyes lingering just a second too long—as if trying to read something she didn’t want anyone to see. “I don’t need help,” she added, more firmly this time. “Clearly.” That annoyed her. “Look, I said I’m fine.” “And I said you’re not.” The tension between them snapped like a wire pulled too tight. Ava’s chest rose and fell rapidly. She didn’t know why this stranger’s words were getting under her skin—but they were. Maybe because he was right. And she hated that. “I don’t even know you,” she muttered. “No,” he said quietly. “But I know that look.” She frowned. “What look?” “The kind people have,” he said, his voice dropping slightly, “when they’ve already lost everything.” Her breath caught. For a second, she forgot how to speak. How could he—? She shook her head quickly, stepping back again. “You’re wrong.” “Am I?” “Yes.” “Then prove it.” His words hit harder than they should have. Ava swallowed, her throat tight. “I don’t have to prove anything to you.” “Then stop standing in the road like you don’t care if you live or die.” Silence. The rain softened, but the weight between them didn’t. Ava looked away first. “I said I’m fine,” she whispered. This time, her voice broke. For a moment, neither of them moved. Then he sighed—quiet, almost annoyed. “Come on,” he said. Ava blinked. “What?” “You’re soaked. You’ll get sick.” “I’ll manage.” “I’m not asking.” She stared at him. “You’re very bossy for someone I just met.” “And you’re very stubborn for someone who almost got hit by a car.” She almost smiled. Almost. “Why do you even care?” she asked softly. He hesitated. Just for a second. Then he looked away, his expression hardening again. “I don’t,” he said. Another lie. Ava noticed it immediately. And for some reason… that scared her more than his coldness. “Liam.” She blinked. “What?” “My name,” he said. “You asked why I care. I don’t. But now you know who doesn’t.” Ava stared at him, confused… but something in her chest shifted slightly. Like a c***k in the darkness. “…Ava,” she said quietly. Their eyes met again. And this time, something passed between them—something neither of them understood yet. Something dangerous. Something inevitable. Because neither of them knew… This wasn’t just a random night. It was the beginning of everything. And the start of a love that would either save them… Or completely destroy them. The rain slowed to a whisper, but the tension between them didn’t. Ava shifted her weight, hugging her arms around herself as the cold finally began to seep into her bones. She hated this—standing here, exposed, seen… by a stranger who somehow looked right through her. “I should go,” she said quietly. Liam didn’t move. “Go where?” She frowned. “Home.” “Like that?” His eyes swept over her—soaked clothes, shaking hands, the exhaustion she couldn’t hide. “You won’t make it far.” “I’ve done worse.” “I don’t doubt that.” His tone wasn’t mocking. If anything, it sounded… certain. And that unsettled her. Ava turned, ready to walk away anyway. She didn’t need this. Didn’t need him. Didn’t need anyone. That’s what she had told herself for months. That’s what kept her standing. But as she took her first step, her foot slipped slightly on the wet pavement. Before she could react— Liam caught her again. This time, his grip was firmer. Steadier. Too steady. “I’m fine,” she snapped, pulling away faster than necessary. “Clearly,” he repeated, but there was less bite in it now. More… patience. Which somehow made it worse. A black car pulled up beside them, sleek and silent like it had been waiting all along. Ava blinked. She hadn’t heard it arrive. The window rolled down slowly, revealing a man in a suit. “Sir,” the driver said, his voice respectful. “We’re late.” Sir? Ava’s eyes flicked back to Liam. He didn’t respond immediately. His gaze stayed on her, unreadable. “I’ll handle it,” he said finally. The driver nodded once and rolled the window back up, the car idling quietly beside them. Ava took a small step back. “You’re… busy,” she said. “I am.” “Then go.” Another pause. Liam glanced at the car, then back at her. “…Get in.” Ava froze. “What?” “I’ll drop you off.” “No.” The answer came too quickly. Too sharp. His eyebrow lifted slightly. “You’d rather walk?” “Yes.” “In the rain.” “Yes.” “After almost getting yourself killed.” Her jaw tightened. “I said I’m fine.” “And I said you’re not.” There it was again. That calm certainty. Like he wasn’t guessing. Like he knew. “I don’t get it,” Ava said, frustration finally spilling through. “Why are you doing this?” Liam’s expression didn’t change. But something in his eyes flickered. “You really want to know?” “Yes.” For a moment, he said nothing. Then— “Because no one stopped for me.” The words were quiet. Simple. But they hit harder than anything else he had said. Ava’s breath caught. She searched his face, but whatever c***k had opened… was already gone. His walls were back up. Stronger than before. The rain picked up again, heavier this time. Ava looked at the car. Then at him. Then away. This was a bad idea. Everything about this was a bad idea. She didn’t know him. Didn’t trust him. Didn’t want to owe anyone anything. But her body was exhausted. Her mind was louder than ever. And for the first time in a long time… she didn’t feel completely alone. That scared her. More than anything. “Just a ride,” Liam said, his voice softer now. “That’s it.” Ava hesitated. Her instincts screamed at her to walk away. To protect herself. To stay in control. But something deeper—something she couldn’t explain—made her stay. “…One ride,” she said finally. Liam opened the car door without another word. As Ava slid into the seat, the warmth hit her instantly. Too warm. Too comfortable. Too unfamiliar. She sat stiffly, unsure of where to look, what to do, how to act. Liam got in beside her. The door shut. And just like that— The outside world disappeared. “Where to?” the driver asked. Ava opened her mouth— Then paused. She didn’t want to say it. Didn’t want him to know. Didn’t want anyone to know where she lived now. Because “home” wasn’t really a home. It was just a place to survive. “…Just drive,” Liam said before she could answer. The car pulled away. Ava turned to him sharply. “I didn’t say—” “I know.” “Then why—?” “Because you weren’t going to.” She stared at him. “You don’t know me.” “No,” he said calmly. “But I know when someone doesn’t want to be found.” Her heart skipped. Again. Silence filled the car. But it wasn’t empty. It was heavy. Charged. Like something had already begun… whether they wanted it or not. Ava looked out the window, watching the city blur past. Lights. People. Life. All of it felt so far away. “Why tonight?” she asked suddenly. Liam glanced at her. “What?” “Why did you stop tonight?” A small pause. Then— “Wrong place,” he said. “Wrong time.” Ava nodded slowly. “…Yeah,” she whispered. “Same.” But deep down— Neither of them believed that. Because this wasn’t just coincidence. It wasn’t just a random meeting in the rain. It was something else. Something bigger. Something neither of them was ready for. And as the car disappeared into the night… So did the last chance either of them had… To walk away.
