Chapter 1 — The Man Behind the Contract
The rain came down hard the night Amelia Carter lost everything.
She stood beneath the dark clouds outside Carter & Co., staring through the glass doors at the company that had once been her family's pride.
Now, she wasn't even allowed inside.
“Miss Carter, please step away from the entrance.”
The security guard's voice was firm.
Amelia tightened her fingers around the small handbag on her shoulder.
“My father built this company,” she said quietly.
The guard looked uncomfortable.
“I’m sorry, Miss Carter. The new management gave us strict instructions.”
New management.
Those words hurt more than she wanted to admit.
Only that morning, Amelia had believed she could save her father's company. She had spent weeks meeting bankers, calling investors, and searching for anyone willing to help.
But the debts were too large.
Her father's business had collapsed.
The family house was about to be taken.
And now Carter & Co. was no longer hers.
Amelia looked at the building one last time before turning away.
Her phone suddenly vibrated.
Unknown Number.
She hesitated before answering.
“Hello?”
A deep male voice came through the phone.
“Amelia Carter?”
“Yes. Who is this?”
“My name is Damian Cross.”
Amelia froze.
Everyone knew that name.
Damian Cross was one of the most powerful billionaires in the country. He was the CEO of Cross Enterprises, a man famous for his cold personality and ruthless business decisions.
“What do you want?” Amelia asked.
“I can solve your problems.”
A bitter laugh escaped her lips.
“You don't even know me.”
“I know enough.”
“And what exactly can you solve?”
“Your father's debts.”
Amelia's expression changed.
Damian continued.
“I can pay every debt your father left behind. I can stop the bank from taking your home. And I can make sure you never have to worry about money again.”
Amelia's heart began beating faster.
“What do you want in return?”
There was a short silence.
Then Damian answered.
“I want you to become my wife.”
Amelia stopped walking.
“What?”
“My wife,” he repeated calmly. “For one year.”
She stared at the rain falling around her.
“You're joking.”
“I don't joke about business.”
“This is marriage, not business.”
“To me, everything is business.”
Amelia shook her head.
“You've lost your mind.”
“Maybe.”
His voice remained completely calm.
“But you need me.”
She hated those words because they were true.
“Why me?” she asked.
“Because I need a wife.”
“That doesn't explain why you chose me.”
“I'll explain everything when we meet.”
Before Amelia could ask another question, the call ended.
She stared at the phone in disbelief.
A billionaire had just offered her a marriage contract.
It was ridiculous.
It was dangerous.
And yet, for the first time that day, she could see a possible way out of the nightmare surrounding her.
The following morning, Amelia walked into the headquarters of Cross Enterprises.
The building was enormous, with polished marble floors and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.
She approached the reception desk.
“I have an appointment with Mr. Cross.”
The receptionist looked at her.
“Your name?”
“Amelia Carter.”
The receptionist checked the computer.
Then her expression changed.
“Mr. Cross is expecting you.”
Amelia swallowed nervously.
The elevator carried her to the top floor.
When the doors opened, she stepped into a quiet office.
A man stood beside the enormous window.
He was tall, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit.
He turned slowly.
Their eyes met.
Damian Cross.
He looked exactly as she had imagined.
Cold.
Confident.
Powerful.
And completely unreadable.
“So,” he said, “you came.”
Amelia lifted her chin.
“I came to hear your offer.”
Damian walked to his desk and placed a document in front of her.
“Read it.”
Amelia picked up the papers.
Her eyes widened when she saw the heading.
MARRIAGE AGREEMENT
She looked at him.
“This is real?”
“Yes.”
“One year?”
“Yes.”
“No love?”
“No.”
“No interference in each other's private lives?”
“That is correct.”
“And after one year?”
“The marriage ends.”
Amelia stared at the contract.
“And you will pay all of my father's debts?”
“All of them.”
She slowly looked up.
“Why are you doing this?”
Damian leaned back in his chair.
“My grandfather controls part of the company.”
“What does that have to do with marriage?”
“He believes a man who refuses to settle down cannot be trusted to lead a family business.”
“So he wants you married?”
“Yes.”
“And you chose me because...?”
“Your family name is respectable. You're intelligent. You're not interested in my money.”
Amelia almost laughed.
“You don't know anything about me.”
“I know enough.”
She looked down at the contract again.
This was madness.
She knew it.
Marrying a stranger was not the kind of thing she had ever imagined doing.
But then she remembered her father's face.
She remembered the company.
She remembered the home where she had grown up.
Everything was disappearing.
Finally, Amelia picked up the pen.
Damian watched her carefully.
“If I agree,” she said, “you keep your promise.”
“I always keep my promises.”
“And nobody can know this is a fake marriage.”
“Agreed.”
“We live our own lives.”
“Agreed.”
“And when the year is over, we walk away from each other.”
Damian's eyes remained fixed on hers.
“Agreed.”
Amelia took a deep breath.
Then she signed the contract.
The sound of the pen scratching across the paper seemed strangely loud in the quiet office.
Damian signed beneath her name.
Just like that, Amelia Carter became the wife of Damian Cross.
A man she barely knew.
A man she didn't love.
A man she had every reason to fear.
Damian closed the contract and stood.
“Welcome to my world, Amelia.”
She looked at him.
“This is only a business arrangement.”
His expression didn't change.
“Of course.”
Neither of them knew how wrong they were.
Because sometimes the most dangerous contracts are the ones that begin without love.
And sometimes the person you promise never to love becomes the person you can never live without.
