Plucking up courage

‘The trial went well. Well for the evidence they had in hand. Now you must remain calm and wait for the closing statements’. Tancredi and Ferrari were talking to Riccio in the visit hall. He was sitting in front of them holding a photo of himself and his girlfriend, Elena Silvestri, in the living room of Elena’s house. He’d asked to have that photo with him, to have the strength to resist in there. Now, he was in front of them weeping and clasping the photo in his hands.
He had to find the inner strength to resist. He knew it wouldn’t be easy to wait for the outcome of the hearing in his cell. Since the very outset of the trial, there was always the hope of a witness deciding to speak in his favour or of some new, last minute, evidence. Now
