CHAPTER FIVE
He hung up the phone and turned to Jade.
Dr. Gaines wants to meet with us in his office at the hospital in fifteen minutes. Victor drew in a ragged breath and ran his fingers
through his black hair. His violet eyes looked tired and worried.
Jade smiled at him, hoping to reassure him that everything was going to be fine.
OK, well, I guess we had better not keep the good doctor waiting, she said.
The drive to the hospital was quiet as both were lost in thought. Victor worried that all the years she had been made to suppress who
she truly was had taken a toll on her and now she was going to suffer some horrible illness he had heard of it happening before.
Jade sat in silence thinking about her first run as a wolf. She had never known that such freedom existed. Now the doctor could tell
her that she would never experience that freedom again.
Victor pulled the car in front of the hospital entrance and a valet ran to meet them. He opened the door for Jade and bowed.
Luna, he said, taking her hand and helping her out of the car.
Thank you, said Jade.
Next, he ran around to Victor’s side of the car and opened his door.
Alpha, he said, and once again bowed, but deeper this time.
Thank you, Jason, said, Victor.
Victor walked around the car and took Jade’s hand.
Are you ready? He asked.
As ready as I can be, answered Jade.
They walked toward the hospital and Jason drove away.
Dr. Gaines's office was a warm and friendly room. His qualifications hung on the wall behind his large oak desk, while the rest of the
room was decorated to make someone feel at ease. It made sense, Jade thought. If you have to give someone bad news, you want to
make them as comfortable as possible.
She chose an overstuffed chair in the corner while Victor sat in a straight back near the door. No sooner had they seated themselves.
Then the door opened and in walked Dr. Gaines. Jade tried to gauge his expression but, as usual, his face was devoid of any emotion.
Waiting until he had seated himself behind his desk, Victor could barely contain his nerves.
So, doc he began. I assume since you asked us to meet you here that you have some news about Jades' lab results.
I do indeed have some news, but before I tell you, Victor, you have to promise me that you will remain calm. Said Dr. Gaines.
Hearing this, Jade began to wring her hands. What was wrong with her? Would Victor reject her after hearing what Dr. Gaines had to
say? As the thoughts ran through her head, Jade almost didn’t hear him when Dr. Gaines said the words neither she nor Victor.
expected to hear.
I’m a what! Exclaimed Jade.
I’m quite sure I was clear when I said it came Dr. Gaines's reply.
So let me see if I have this straight, said Victor. Jades’ wolf glows because she’s a fairy?
From all the tests we’ve done and all the results we have gotten back, it would seem so answered Dr. Gaines.
He turned to look at Jade. It seems that one of your parents had fairy blood in them and you have inherited some of the qualities.
Trying to stop the spinning room, Jade gathered her thoughts and closed her eyes. Taking a moment to calm her nerves and find her
voice, she looked at Dr. Gaines and asked. So will this affect me in any other way besides my glowing fur?
That I can’t answer. He said, looking over her chart. But from the test results, you have a high level in your blood, so your parent
must have been at least half-fairy. It may also explain why it required so little wolfsbane to keep you from shifting. I spoke with your
parents and neither of them could remember if your birth parents had fairy qualities, but they did say that it took just a few drops of
wolfsbane in your food each day to stave off the shift.
Jade looked at Victor. Since his initial shock, he had remained silent, and she wondered if he was now going to reject her. She tried
to determine what he was thinking by the look on his face, but she was sure his face must mimic her own. Shock and disbelief.
Rising slowly from her chair, she walked over to where he sat and took his hand.
Victor, she softly began, I would like to know what you are thinking.
Taking his hand from hers, he stood up from his chair and pulled her into a bear hug. I think this is GREAT! He exclaimed. I was so
afraid Dr. Gaines was going to tell us you were dying or that you couldn’t shift ever again, but instead, he tells us that you are part
fairy. A smile danced across his lips and reached all the way to his eyes.
I’m so glad you’re happy squeaked Jade, but could you put me down, I can’t breathe.
Oh! Sorry, said Victor, and placed her feet back on the floor. Once she could breathe again, Jade looked at Victor.
What does this mean? She looked confused and unsure.
I don’t know, but I guess we should maybe ask someone who has some experience with the subject. Replied Victor.
I don’t know where to find a Fairy to ask, said Jade in exasperation.
I might be able to help with that little problem, smiled Victor.
No sooner had he said the words than the door blew open and in came the most beautiful woman Jade had ever seen.
