CHAPTER THREE
Hello brother, his mind linked to the man on the bed. He put his head up and smelled the air. Smells like blood. Am I to assume the
pup has been born?
The man on the bed had shifted and now a silver wolf stood in front of the grey wolf. My daughter is gone, and you will never get
your hands on her brother! She is far beyond your reach, and you are beaten!
Oh! Not quite dear Richard. I don’t need your brat to take your pack and that is what I came here to do. She is a minor inconvenience
that is of no consequence to me.
It was then the woman on the bed moved and caught his attention. Before her mate could move, the grey wolf jumped on the bed and
ripped her throat out. No! cried her mate. It was a cry that chilled Jade to her soul.
I’ll kill you for that, David, snarled Richard.
Then let’s have at it, shall we? taunted David.
Without another word, Richard lunged at David and the two wolves began to tear at each other.
Jade looked on in horror as the larger silver wolf driven by rage and grief easily overtook the grey wolf. Standing over him with a
look of hate, he spat at the grey wolf now you
Die! Goodbye Brother! With those words, the silver wolf lunged for the throat of the smaller wolf. just then an arrow plunged into
the side of the silver wolf, sending him flying off the gray wolf. The gray wolf attacked and tore open the throat of the larger wolf.
Jade tried to look away, but Saphira kept her from turning. You must watch this to the end, Jade. It is the story of our beginning and
if we are to ever have a connection, you must understand everything about us.
But it’s so violent and sad. Please tell me, Saphira, this isn’t how our life is to be nothing but violence and sadness.
Saphira moved closer to Jade and nuzzled her. I told you this is our start, but our end is in your hands. Now come we have a lot to
see before the end of this day and time grows short.
Jade looked one last time at the scene before her. Again, the picture changed and this time they were standing in front of the
mansion Victor lived in. Looking in the window, she saw a small boy playing on the floor as his adoring parents looked on. The big
brown wolf appeared and shifted back into the man who had taken the baby from its father. He
knocked on the door and when the maid opened it, he rushed in without waiting to be invited.
Forgive me, Alpha Andrew, but I was sent by my master, Alpha Richard.
That very night, his wife, the beautiful Amanda, had given birth to their pup. I was instructed to bring her to you as Alpha Richard's
brother, David, has attacked the River pack.
Andrew jumped from his chair and rushed to take the screaming baby from the exhausted man.
Please Beta Steven, you must be exhausted. Please have a seat. He snapped his fingers and summoned a maid.
Get a drink for Beta Steven and some clothing he ordered.
Yes, Alpha right away. Said the maid and ran from the room.
Once Steven had something to drink and was again dressed, Andrew motioned for him to sit and tell him everything that had
transpired.
When Steven was done, he looked at Andrew with concern on his face. If it is okay with you, I will take my leave now and return to
my pack. I do not know the fate of my Alpha and his mate.
Of course, said Andrew. And Steven send a messenger back as soon as you have assessed the situation.
Yes, Alpha Andrew, with that Steven bowed and shifted as he leaped from the front porch of the mansion.
Andrew looked at the tiny infant sleeping peacefully on his wife’s lap. What should he do with her? Most Alphas would kill the child
as it would weaken the rival pack and make it easier to take for their own. Andrew had a different idea in mind. She was the same
age as his daughter, and she would make a fine mate for his son, Victor. As if he knew his father was thinking about him, Victor
came to stand by his father’s side.
Baby, said Victor, pointing to the infant.
Yes, that’s right, said Andrew.
Victor turned loose of his father’s hand and walked to the baby on his mother’s lap. Putting his hand on hers, he said, mate.
Andrew and his wife looked at their son with astonishment. He was only three years old. How did he know this was to be his mate?
Yes, said Andrew with a smile on his face, mate.
Jade watched what transpired through the window and as the couple took the children to retire for the evening, she turned to Saphira
.
So, Victor knew I was his mate the day I was born. That is me, isn’t it? She asked.
Yes, it is you, answered Saphira, and yes, he knew from the moment he saw you that you were going to be his mate.
Suddenly, feeling very tired, Jade rested her weight on Saphira’s back.
Would it be okay if we saved some of the lessons for tomorrow, she asked. I am so tired I can hardly keep my eyes open.
I think that’s a very good idea, agreed Saphira.
Saphira shook her fur and Jade found herself back on the soft bed. She barely noticed before once again sleep overtook her. This
time her dreams were filled with a different kind of pain. Something deeper and rawer. She saw the woman with the beautiful
emerald eyes holding her and knew that it was her mother. A mother that she had never known but that must have loved her very
much. The man named Richard was her father. He had fought to the death for her and her mother,
She had grown up thinking Fred and Doris were her parents. She had thought taking the trip with Saphira would answer some of her
questions, but she had come away with even more questions.
Victor returned to find Jade still sleeping and began to grow concerned. He called for Dr. Gaines to come to the mansion and check
her out. Pacing in the hall while the Dr. examined Jade was torture for Victor. He had worried all day that the shift had been too
much for her and now he was certain that Dr. Gaines would tell him she had slipped into a coma or something worse.
Victor turned to the door as Dr. Gaines shut it. She’s fine, just exhausted. It seems her wolf, Saphira, took her on a walkabout through
the past today. She’s had a lot to digest so just give her a few days to recuperate.
Victor shook the doctor’s hand. Thanks, Jarod. I’ll have someone take you back to the hospital.
No need Alpha. It’s a nice night and I think the walk will do me some good.
Victor shook his head. As you wish. I’ll let you see yourself out and I’ll stop by the hospital in the morning to make those promised
visits.
Sounds good, said Dr. Gaines was already heading for the stairs.
Victor knocked on the door and waited for Jade to invite him in.
Come in, said a weak voice from the other side of the door.
Opening it slowly, Victor poked his head inside first. I just wondered if you felt up to some company. I promise not to stay too long.
I would like that very much, replied Jade with a smile.
Victor entered the room and pulled a chair next to the bed.
I was so afraid I had lost you. I’m so sorry my actions caused your shift before you were ready. I should have prepared you better.
Jade took his hand.
Don’t be sorry, Victor. I’m not. I got to meet my wolf. From what I hear, you have met her also.
Well, not me personally, said Victor with a slight smile, but my wolf has, and he says he likes her quite well.
Please let me introduce you to her, then said Jade. You may want to stand back. I’m still new at this and it can get a little messy.
Victor looked worried as she got up from the bed and stood up.
Are you sure you are ready for this so soon after the last shift?
I’m quite sure Jade smiled. Before I shift, her name was Saphira.
You know you can mind link me like I just did with you now and I will be able to speak with her, don’t you? Asked Victor.
Jade gave a little start.
I don’t know if I will ever get used to people popping into my head talking to me, she laughed.
You will learn how to control that, also laughed Victor. Now open your mind, and allow me to call Saphira.
Jade closed her eyes and concentrated on the shift while Victor called to her wolf.
Saphira woke from her sleep at Victor’s call.
Yes, my Alpha.
