The Only Solution

Dylan's POV “I am sure that after today, I will stop being photogenic from the number of pictures you both have made me take today,” Greta said smiling beautifully for the camera. “You will indeed be more beautiful. Believe me,” Damien told her smiling. We wanted to capture every moment so that Dad could see them when he returned. “You guys should stop deceiving her. She is not that pretty,” Derek said from where he was seated in front of the television clutching the game control like his life depended on it. “Stop being mean Derek. Apologise to her right now,” I said. Derek dropped the game control and turned to Greta with a saccharine smile before saying, “Oh, beautiful princess of the kingdom, accept my sincere apologies." After saying that, Derek snorted and returned to his game. Damien and I rolled our eyes. Derek was such a baby. Greta’s eyes misted over but I quickly pulled her into a warm embrace and held her to me. “Derek will always be Derek just overlook his words,” I whispered to her. Damien also moved closer and pushed her hair out of the way to place a placating hand on her back. “Push everything that has to do with Derek off your mind today. It's your birthday, don't let anyone spoil today,” Damien whispered into her ear, then went ahead to tickle her neck with his beard. Greta laughed, and I picked her up by her waist and swung her around, making her laugh hard. When I placed her on the ground, she was holding onto me and laughing heartily. “Come on now, let's finish this photo shoot,” Damien said and we continued taking the pictures. Suddenly, a beautiful smell hit my nose and I froze. There was no one else there except my brothers and Greta. “Mate,” my wolf howled in my head. Mate? That is impossible! I screamed in my head. How can Greta be my mate? “Mark her,” my wolf growled in my head. I stood still making sure I didn't make any move to trigger my wolf further. I had to do everything in my power to rein in my wolf. The scent coming from Greta was maddening. I stole a glance at Derek, who was in front of the television, hooked to the video game, to see that he was looking straight at Greta. I looked at Damien, who was standing on Greta's other side, to see that his eyes were alternating between his wolf's and his normal eyes. Damn it! They could sense her too. It meant we shared the same mate and it was Greta? How is that even possible? Damien's gaze collided with mine again and he knew exactly what we were supposed to do. Greta's voice asking us if everything was okay almost made me lose the little grip I had on my wolf but I hastened my step away from her and up the stairs. I will not deny the fact that I had loved Greta at first sight. Her innocent look and the way she blushed beautifully when she was introduced to us made me want her. Her hair flowed down her back like a veil and the colour was beautiful. It was chestnut like that of Damien but then Dad had introduced her as our adopted sister. I was disappointed because I had never felt gravitated towards a girl like that ever in my life. I had hidden my feelings at that moment, but I finally accepted that she was not a girl I could get involved with. On that day, she arrived at the house, and we heard what we were not supposed to hear. My brothers and I had decided to go to Dad and ask why he adopted Greta without informing us but we had overheard Dad on the phone talking to someone about Greta. “She looks exactly like her mum,” he had said, then kept quiet to listen to the person on the other side before he continued, “She gave her the name we picked together. She named her Greta. I picked the name. I wish I were there all through her pregnancy. I wish I were there at her final moment. It hurts that I never said goodbye.” My brothers and I, at that moment, thought we had heard enough and went back to our room. Derek was more than livid. Mum had been dead for five years at the time. We were gradually getting over her shocking death and Derek, who was the closest to Mum, hated the idea that Dad cheated on Mum, so he hated Greta with passion. We were older than Greta by five years which meant Mum was still alive when Dad cheated. Derek never attacked her but he always made sure he delivered remarks that would destroy her mood and sarcasms that could make anyone's ears ring. Damien decided that it was a good idea that we had a sister. I, too, took the love I had for her and turned it into a brotherly love. I adored Greta like every older brother would. I doted on her and spoiled her at every opportunity. I treated her like a princess because that was the only way I thought I could channel my feelings. I got into the room before my brothers and I started pacing. Greta was our half sister. How was it possible that she was also our mate? “Someone should tell me that I am hallucinating,” Derek said breathlessly. I was sure that he was trying to control his wolf as well because of the way he was breathing. “How can Greta be our mate?” Damien said then slumped on the bed with a big sigh. “Fine. We have always known that there is a possibility of sharing a mate but a I can't be mated to her. Can this be our fate possibly? No way,” Derek said rubbing his face as if he had something on it. “Are you serious right now? You are talking about fate? She is our f*****g half sister,” I said to Derek gritting my teeth. “Oh my goodness,” Derek said then sat on the edge of the bed holding his head in his hands. He obviously had not allowed the situation we were in to sink in. Greta could never be our mate. That was pure i****t. We fell into silence, each of us trying to decipher how to proceed. Greta chose that moment to knock on the door and ask if we were okay. I looked at the door with panic. Damien told her that we were fine and mumbled something about what we ate. I listened as her footsteps retreated back downstairs and waited till I couldn't hear her footsteps again before I spoke. “My wolf is responding to her voice. What madness is this?” I growled. “I can't believe that this is happening. What do we do now?” Damien asked worriedly. “We should tell Dad,” Derek opined. “No way. How do we tell him that our half sister is our mate?” I asked bewildered. “What do we do about it, then? We can't just hope up in this room forever,” Damien said. “The best thing we can do is to avoid her for now,” I suggested. “How? We live in the same house. Besides, you and Damien allow her to come in here sometimes to cuddle up with you. Worst still, she has a spare key to this room,” Derek reeled out. “We can avoid her. She will simply think that you have finally convinced us to turn against her. Luckily enough, she is only human and can't feel what we feel. And about the key, we simply change it,” I said. “By avoiding her, are we going to achieve anything?” Damien asked. “We have no options here Damien. My wolf wanted to mark her that very minute her scent hit us. We either avoid her or commit the greatest crime this community has ever witnessed,” I said. “First, I need to get out of this house and get fresh air. Just maybe when I return, my wolf will realize that Greta is my abomination of a stepsister and stop longing for her,” Derek hissed, then stood up and went out of the room. “I think we should leave too. That is the safest thing to do right now till we are sure that our wolves are under control,” Damien suggested and I agreed with him. I had to walk hurriedly the moment we got downstairs and I laid eyes on Greta again. I mumbled an excuse to her and we rushed out of the house. Just from her mere presence, my wolf was going berserk. I was sure that I was the most affected out of the three of us because I felt overwhelmed by her presence. I had the only solution, which was to avoid her like a plague, else…
