Chapter 13

1242 Words
Jax's POV My heart started racing, my breath caught in my throat. That one question brought me so much hope, and had my wolf going crazy. "Are we mates?" she asked me. "Yes." was all I could manage to get out. I wanted to pull her in my arms and hug and kiss her, but when she broke out in tears, all I could do was hold her face and look her in the eyes. I don't understand why this has her upset. Did she not want to be mates? "Why are you crying? Does being my mate upset you?" I ask, terrified of her answer. Her eyes shot up to meet mine, "What? Oh goodness Jax, no! It's not that at all." she said to me. "Then what is it? What has you so upset?" "It's just that.. I spent so long praying that I'd never meet you because of what Grayson would do." she starts crying again. Ok, was not expecting her to say that. Obviously, this is going to go into the thing she hasn't told me yet. I just need to keep my wolf calm so she can say it. He's already wanting to murder Grayson and Michael for what they've done to her so far, and something tells me I'm not going to like what she's about to say. "What do you mean? What would Grayson do about it?" "He--he doesn't believe in the mate bond. He says fated mates make you weak, and could be used against you in wars." She is telling me through her sniffles. Even crying, she's adorable. I just sit her holding her hand as she continues. "We are told that, that if we are to ever meet our mates, we-- we are to reject them on sight, and if we re--refuse, he would..." she stopped and just stared into my eyes with fear in hers. "Tell me, he would what?" I softly begged her to continue. "He would ki--kill us both." she said as she started crying again. This d**k is something else!! My wolf is ready to go hunt him down and rip his head off for all the pain and suffering he's caused not only Bailey, but any other wolf he's made reject their mate. "Bailey, shhh honey, stop crying. Bailey, look at me." I say as I use my index finger to tilt her chin up to meet my eyes. "He is not going to kill us. Do you hear me? One, I won't let him anywhere near you ever again, and two, that's illegal. He can't force you to reject your mate." "But he did! He made this one couple who were mated, reject each other. They refused and he murdered them. He made the whole pack watch!" she exclaimed. Man, the more I hear about this guy, the more I can't wait to kill him. I have to remember to stay calm. Bailey needs me to stay calm. "Then, he needs to be turned in for his crime." I tell her. "Bailey, do you want to reject me?" I ask her with absolute fear. I don't think I'll survive if she rejects me. She looks at me and quickly answers No, much to my relief. "Then it's settled, because I'm not rejecting you either" I say to her. She smiles at me as I wipe the tears away from her eyes. We just sat there for a second, gazing into each other's eyes. Next thing I knew, I'm slowly leaning into her as she's slowly leaning towards me. I can feel her breath fanning my lips. We are just inches away from each other. My gaze drops down to her lips, and then back up to meet her eyes. "Hey Jax, I was wondering...oh! Sorry" my father said walking into my office, interrupting me and Bailey. Great timing dad, I think to my self. "It's ok." I say to him. "Bailey, I'd like to introduce you to my father, Edward. Dad, this is Bailey. My mate." " So you're the mystery woman I've been hearing all about? Very nice to meet you Bailey." My dad says as he extends his hand toward her. I can tell she's nervous about meeting him. I had wanted to wait until she was a little more comfortable before meeting them, but what's done is done now. Bailey reaches out and shakes his hand. My dad can instantly sense her nervousness and looks at me, but I gently shake my head as to tell him we'd talk about it later. I actually could use his advice on a couple of things regarding this whole situation. "You're home early." I tell him. He and my mom left a few weeks ago to go on a second honeymoon for their 30th wedding anniversary. They weren't suppose to be back until next weekend. " Yeah, well. You know your mother. She was worried about something going wrong, and you not knowing how to handle it." My mother always was the worry ward. Nevermind the fact that I've been running this pack for almost eleven years now. "Anyways, Bailey, let me help you to your room. I'm sure you could use some rest" I say to her. She actually looks really exhausted, she's still weak and recovering. "Ok" "Dad if you don't mind staying here? There's actually a few things I'd like to go over with you." "Sure thing, son. Bailey, again pleasure meeting you." "Pleasure meeting you too." Bailey says back to him. ****************************************** As I return to my office, after tucking Bailey in bed, my dad is still sitting there waiting for me. "She's nice." he says. "She's amazing" I reply. " She seems a little...." I can tell my dad is trying to choose his words carefully, "nervous" he finally says. "She's been through a lot lately, which is actually part of what I wanted to talk to you about" "Sure thing, is it true she out ran a rouge in human form?" "Yeah, she did" I said feeling pride well up in me. "Impressive" was all my dad said. "So, what's on your mind?" I tell my dad about what Bailey had gone through, and everything with Grayson and Michael. He sat there just listening, trying to take it all in. "Wow, this is insane" was all he said. "I know right., but I have a plan to get Grayson to stop looking for her. We need to turn him into the elders, but with Michael being an elder, I'm not sure which ones we can trust. I'm not going to risk exposing her and giving her location away to anyone." I tell him "I understand. I've never met Michael Lauer, but I've heard people talk. He's not exactly the friendliest person. Really keeps to himself. Now I think I understand why. Anyways, I'll make a few calls to my friends and see who we can go to." He tells me. "Thank you dad. I really appreciate it." "Of course son. We'll get to the bottom of this." "I'm glad, and dad, not that I need to remind you..." "Of course Jax. I'll be really careful what I say. I'll not put your mate in danger." he tells me, knowing exactly what I was going to tell him. "Thank you dad." He leaves me in my office. I feel better knowing that now we have a plan to keep Bailey safe.
