CHAPTER 1
Audrey’s POV I picked up my school bag from the worn out couch in our living room and i walked out of the door. “ Be careful Sweetie, okay ?” my mums was heard loudly behind me. “ Ok mum I will,” I answered back smiling and losing my smile immediately. The thought of going to college sucks each day. I had to walk further more to get to the bus station, it wasn’t that far from my house. I hastened my steps, I could see the bus station and people getting on already. I got in front of the bus and stood still adjusting my bag, every single morning I wished it would just drive off without me. The ride to school wasn’t the problem. It was what awaited me when I get to my destination. college. A place where everyone seemed to have a friend except me. I got into the bus with a sigh, already scared of another day of mocking stares, whispered jokes, fake coughs that always sounded like, “Nerd”. Or accidental bumps that I know was intentional. The “Nerd”was worst, it was like they couldn’t remember my actual name. To them I wasn’t human. I was just the weird kid that always had her nose stuck in a book and answered too many questions. No one wanted to join me for lunch. They never for once asked me to join their projects unless they were forced to by the teacher. And don’t even get me started on gym classes, that was nothing short of a public humiliation session. Sometimes I can’t stop myself from wondering if there was something wrong with me. Maybe I wasn’t good with jokes. Or maybe people just needed someone to look down on, and I happened to be the easiest target. The bus soon approached the school gate, and I felt a sharp pain in my stomach. Another day. Another six hours of being bulletproof proof and acting like their words and actions didn’t bother me. If only they knew that a part of me believes them, each time they called me a nerd. As soon as I got to school, I caught sight of a group of girls screaming and crowding around Logan, the popular final-year student. I have always had a crush on Logan but it’s worthless huh, how can he even look my way. Any way i walked past them and got to the library. I have a class in Thirty Minutes time, I picked up a book and tried to read but i couldn’t i looked around me and noticed no one sat alone. Everyone had a friend or a friend click. They would turn every few minutes to look at me and whisper amongst themselves. I stood up immediately and walked out of the library. I was heading to my classroom building when I caught sight of Logan, our eyes locked and I found myself smiling and I regretted it instantly. I gripped my bag firmly and hastened my walk. His friends were all laughing so hard at me, what was I thinking when I smiled at him. I only humiliated myself. “Hey, hey, wait” I heard someone calling out behind me. I turned behind only to see Logan walking up to me. I stood still in shock, I looked behind me to see if he was calling someone else. When I realised there was no one else behind , I pointed at myself silently asking, “Me?” “Yes, you” he said smiling. I sighted his friends from a distance who were laughing and whispering amongst themselves. Embarrassed, I turned and started running. He ran after me. “Stop right there already! What’s wrong with you?” he shouted, clearly getting pissed. I stopped and he caught up to me. “Why are you running? I’m Logan, by the way. You already know that, don’t you?” “Yeah, I know who you are. I’m Audrey,” I replied, avoiding his gaze and keeping my eyes fixed on the ground. “Okay, look, I’ll go straight to the point. I like you, and I want you to be my girlfriend.” I was thunderstruck. “What?” I asked, taking a step backwards. “What are you saying to me? Is this some kind of joke?” “No, it’s not a joke. Meet me at Alice Restaurant by 7:00 p.m.,” he said before walking back to his friends with a smile. I turned and walked away slowly, battling with my thoughts. What just happened? Logan asked me to be his girlfriend… me? Oh my God, am I dreaming? And he wants to meet me by 7:00 p.m. Should I go or not? Is this a good idea? I quickly snapped out of my thoughts and hurried to my class. The teacher was already there. I sat down, and for the first time, I was completely absent-minded. It felt like I was dreaming. I didn’t answer any questions in class, and I didn’t write anything. I was just lost in my thoughts. Before I knew it, the bell rang, and everyone stood up and started leaving the classroom. I was still sitting seated. “Audrey, is everything okay? You seem off today,” Mrs Beverly said as she packed up her books and prepared to leave the classroom. “I’m okay, Mrs Beverly. I just have a stomach ache,” I replied, avoiding eye contact. “Well, maybe you should go to the Student Health Center for a check-up, okay?” she said as she walked out of the classroom. “Be good.” “Sure, Mrs Beverly,” I said, raising my voice slightly so she could hear me.
