Collapsing on her bed, she kept wondering if she truly made the right decision. She would love to please her parents and just marry one of the numerous men that always come for marriage but on the other hand, she didn’t want to compromise her future because of her parent’s wishes.
“Lala, your Father asks that you be in his chambers at once.” Emmaline says timidly, behind the door. Emmaline is older than she is but despite the fact that she is her personal maid, Emmaline is still scared of her.
“I will be with him shortly,” she responded.
Walking to her Father’s chambers gave her mixed feelings and a little bit of fear. Even though she is a tough girl that the whole kingdom knows about, she’s a little bit scared of the man who is her father. He could be calm but stern when he wants to. They have been at loggerheads recently, especially since she has refused to get married to one of the men who has come for her.
“Lala, why did you decide to embarrass me in front of my guests?” Her father said immediately she got into his chambers.
“I’m sorry Father, but I just don’t want Charles”
“Lala, so many men have come for you but you turn each one of them down. What more do you want?!”
“Father, when the time is right, I might consider getting married but now is not the time”.
“Perhaps, you have any young man of this kingdom in mind?” He says, looking at her sternly.
“No, father” she answers dryly, avoiding his gaze.
“Madeline, I told you that those lessons she took as a child would ruin the feminine side of her but you insisted, now look at the woman those lessons produced!” He says angrily looking at her mother, and in return, her Mother looks at her in disappointment.
“Father, the bill passed down from generation to generation is that every daughter of this kingdom is free to decide her fate.” She cuts in and continues, “ I have chosen my fate, I want to be a warrior. I can’t marry any man for now until I know the time is right. Until then, I will have to decline every marriage proposal that comes my way” she says looking at her father. Her father looked at her and an expression of disappointment was planted across his face.
“I’m disappointed in you Lala.” He says dryly and dismisses her presence with a wave of one hand. She gently shut the door of his chambers and stood behind it. She hated getting on her father’s bad side, because she is his favorite child and seeing him angry broke her heart but she has to be selfish this time. She walked slowly towards her room when she looked at the giant wall clock hung on the wall, it was 2:30pm.
Suddenly, she remembered she’s supposed to have an appointment with Mayre, her only friend since childhood. She walked faster to her room so she could change her clothes, she couldn’t wear the masculine clothes she would have loved to wear so she had to wear a simple short sleeved gown. She slipped into a brown boot from the shoe rack, took her small bag and headed out of the house. She went to the stables to get her favorite horse, Maddie, as she fondly called it. As she sat on it, a familiar voice spoke which made her look up.
“Hello sister, I haven’t seen you all day” Victoria said
“Well, you’re seeing me now” She says with an angry look planted on her face. Victoria is her immediate younger sister who loves to tell on her to look like the perfect child.
“Easy sister, easy!” She said walking close to some horses in the stable and continued, “Where are you off to right now?” “Off to see Mayre, do you have any problem with that?” She asked with feigning annoyance
“Not at all, just asking like a concerned sister” she says and laughs with a hint of sarcasm. Seeing the hint in her sister’s laugh, she rode off and tried to suppress the annoyance towards her sister. She loosened the bun she had earlier and her hair hung loosely above her shoulders. In no time she got to Mayre’s small cottage. Mayre is a beautiful maiden as well but not as beautiful as Lala. Her parents had died a few years ago, leaving her to stay alone. She has been her only friend since childhood because every other girl in their kingdom had grown to dislike her.
“Lala!” She says and gives Luna a tight hug.
“ I missed you so much”
“You must be joking, you saw me two days ago” she says twitching her eyebrow and laughs.
“I know. I wish I could live with you so I don’t have to go back home” Lala said sadly
“Well, do come in. I made potatoes and cheese” she says as they walk inside the cottage.
The cottage is made up of a small bed, about five water jars filled to the brim, a table for eating and reading, and a kitchen by the right side. Lala sits on the old rickety bed and takes off her boots. Looking up, Mayre has already set the table so she hurriedly walks to the chair beside the table to eat, she suddenly realizes that she hasn’t eaten all day.
“So tell me, what’s wrong?” Mayre asked.
“I didn’t say anything happened” she answered and scooped some potatoes inside her mouth.
“You don’t have to tell me, your face says a lot.” Mayre says and folds her hands on the table then focuses her attention on her friend. Lala kept eating, intentionally putting her friend on suspense. Which she knew Mayre hates so much.
“Why aren’t you eating?” She asks absentmindedly, using her tongue to lick o the cheese on the left side of her mouth.
“Should I leave some for you?” She asked with a smile.
