The devil, herself

“Why aren’t you eating?” She asks absentmindedly, using her tongue to lick o the cheese on the left side of her mouth. “Don’t drift from the subject! Besides I ate just before you came, I reserved this one for you”. “Okay” she said, gulping water from the cup beside her and belched out loud, then continued, “My dad is at it again. This marriage thing” she says and rolls her eyes. “What exactly happened?” “Well, a prince from southern Iceland, wants me to marry him” “And I’m guessing you turned him down, again?” “What do you mean “again?” You know me better than anyone else. I don’t want to get married, at least not right now” “Lala, i'm not judging you, but don’t you think you should listen to your parents and get married so they won’t have to talk too much, they’re hurt to see their first daughter despise the thought of marriage” “Well, it’s my life and I get to choose my fate. I don’t want to get married. Plus, I’ve not even gotten who I love so until then, it can wait” “If you say so, I’m just worried about you, you know? Mayre says, clearing the plates from the table. “I know, but I’m fine okay?” “Okay. Well I told you about that fine man I saw at the games night last week?” Mayre says blushing hard “Yes, what happened to him?” “Well, he told me he will be coming this evening to see me, could you wait a little bit to see him because I know you will love to go to the inn” “Well, okay but just this once” Lala responds with a smile. “Yes, just once.” The rest of the evening was spent on doing some chores around the cottage while waiting for the young man. It was getting dark when they saw a Manly figure walking towards them. immediately Mayre saw the young man, she started straightening her rumpled white long gown. “Hello, young ladies” he says bowing courteously “Hello, Marcus, this is my best friend, Lala” Mayre says smiling. “It’s nice to meet you finally, I’ve heard so much about you” “Oh is that so?” She says eyeing Mayre fondly and continues, “I’ve heard so much about you as well, Marcus” “Well, why don’t we go inside, it’s getting dark” says Mayre “I have to leave now. Why don’t you two enjoy the evening while I head out to the inn , eh?” “Alright, see you soon Lala” Mayre says and walks into the cottage with Marcus. As she hopped on the horse, she opened the small bag she took with her and checked if her small knife was in the bag, because bad things tend to happen at the inn. She paid for a small space for Maddie at the stable beside the inn and then walked to the inn. It was filled with Men, majorly. She made her way to the table at the front and ordered a bottle of rum. She kept drinking slowly while listening to the beautiful song a woman was singing for the crowd. She watched the woman in amusement and instantly wished she knew how to sing. As she was about to take in another gulp of rum, she felt a tap on her shoulder. She looked up and saw two young men whom she identified as the men she fought with at one of the game nights held the previous year. “Hey, if it is not the devil herself” one of them said laughing loudly. “Look, Stephan, I’m not in the mood. Let me be” she responded calmly and kept sipping the rum from her cup. “Ed, do you know what makes me angry about Lala?” Stephan asks the Man beside him, and continued, “she keeps thinking she’s a Man” “You are supposed to be at home with your husband, singing the children to bed. Leading your husband to the bedroom” says Ed laughing hysterically causing the crowd at the inn to focus all attention on them. “And not drinking rum at a local inn......” Stephan cuts in and takes the cup away from Lala’s hand, then pours the contents on the floor. “Alright, that’s it” Lala says and throws a punch at Stephan. “You are not scared of us huh?” Asked Ed walking towards her. She instantly holds Ed by the arm and twists it making him face the crowd. She took the small knife she had earlier in her bag and placed it on his throat. “Lala please...” Ed says shakily. Stephan tries to come closer but she blurts out loud, “one wrong move, I will slit his throat open and pull out his voice box. Try me!” She says with a stern look. She scans the expression written on the faces of the people in the inn and they had fearful stares. “Okay we are sorry” says Stephan, pleadingly. “Say it louder!” She says tightening her grip on Ed. “We are sorry!” He says, a bit louder this time but in a sincere manner. Hearing the apology, she pushes Ed forward which makes him stagger and falls into Stephan’s arm. “The next time you try what you just did, I will leave you with a scar and make sure you suffer” she says to the both men, then picks up her bag and walks out of the inn. The cold stares of the crowd made her walk faster and in no time, she picked Maddie and rode back home. She kept on wondering why most men in the kingdom dislike her so much. All she did to make them hate her is because in most of the sword contests held in the kingdom, she emerged victorious. She rode slowly till she got back home. After putting Maddie in the stable, Lala walks into the house with hopes that she doesn’t see anyone on the way to her room. She pushed the door open slowly and shut it noiselessly. The candles in the hallway were dim so it made walking easier without being seen by anyone. She successfully made it to her room and shut the door slowly. Emmaline must have lit the candles too early because the light it brought to the room was really dim. She took off her bag and the dress she was wearing, then slipped into her night wear, tied her hair into a messy bun and slipped into her sheets. She reflected on what happened throughout the day and allowed nature to have its way.
