Five years later, Kaelen is forced to bow before the formidable Winter Queen for survival, only to discover she is the Omega he discarded. When the residual ice magic inside his old wound proves Elara was his true savior all along, he must pay a devastating price. To stop a f*******n blood array, Kaelen faces an irreversible choice: shatter his own wolf core, sacrificing his supreme power forever. Chapter 1 The Severed Soul-Bond
The first sign of doom was not the roar of a beast or the clash of steel, but the cold. It was a wrongness in the air, a sharp, crystalline chill that had no place here, at the heart of our sacred geothermal grove. During the Black Moon Ceremony, the air should have been thick with the heat of the earth, a comforting blanket of steam rising from the glowing fissures in the ground. Tonight, it was thin and brittle, and my breath plumed before my face like a ghost. A shiver traced its way down my spine, not from the temperature, but from the sudden, focused weight of a hundred pairs of eyes. One moment, I was just another Omega in the congregation, my heart swelling with pride for the Alpha King on the dais. The next, I was the epicenter of a spreading circle of fear. The whispers started like the rustle of dead leaves, a dry, anxious sound that scraped at my nerves. “It’s her.” “The cold… it follows her.” “She is a blight on the sacred warmth.” I shrank back, my hands instinctively clutching the thin ceremonial robes at my chest. It made no sense. I was Elara of the Black Moon pack, born and raised under the protection of the geothermal barrier. I loved this warmth, this life. How could I be the source of the very thing that threatened us? My gaze flew to the dais, seeking him. Kaelen. My Alpha. My King. My fated mate. The golden thread of our soul-bond pulsed between us, a silent, shimmering connection that was supposed to be unbreakable. He stood tall and powerful, his silver hair catching the light of the ritual torches, his jaw set as he watched the great heat-crystal above the altar flicker and dim. Panic, sharp and cold as the air, lanced through me. The barrier was failing. That’s when she moved. Selene, her fiery red hair a stark contrast to the encroaching gloom, stepped forward. She was the one the elders whispered about, the prophesied Luna with the legendary heat-generating mark. She radiated a confidence that I, a simple Omega, could only dream of. “Alpha King,” she called out, her voice ringing with feigned distress. She held up her arm, and even from a distance, I could see it: a swirling, intricate mark on her forearm that pulsed with a faint, warm light. The Black Moon mark. Or so everyone believed. “The barrier weakens. There is an unnatural cold that resists the sacred fire. It comes from her.” Her finger, slender and accusatory, pointed directly at me. The collective gasp of the pack was a physical blow. The golden thread connecting me to Kaelen tightened, vibrating with a wave of his confusion and alarm. He wouldn't believe her. He couldn't. “Kaelen,” I whispered, though he was too far to hear. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage of bone. He finally turned his head, his gaze sweeping over the crowd until it locked with mine. For a heartbeat, I saw the man I loved, the Alpha who had found me in the woods as a pup and recognized the hum of destiny between us. But that flicker of warmth was extinguished as quickly as it came, replaced by the glacial mask of a king burdened by an impossible choice. “The ancient laws are clear,” the High Priest intoned, his voice a gravelly rumble that seemed to shake the very stones beneath our feet. “Any who bear the curse of the frost, who threaten the sacred warmth that protects this pack from the Eternal Winter, must be purged.” Purged. The word was a death sentence. I took a stumbling step forward, pushing through the wall of hostile glares. I had to reach him. If I could just touch him, make him feel the truth of our bond, he would know this was a lie. “Kaelen, please,” I begged, my voice cracking as I broke through the front ranks. I was only a few feet from the dais now. I could see the hard lines of his face, the conflict warring in his storm-grey eyes. “It’s not me. I would never harm our people. Our bond… you know me.” He looked from my desperate face to Selene, who stood beside him now, her expression a perfect mask of righteous sorrow. She placed a hand on his arm, and the faint warmth from her counterfeit mark seemed to be the only heat left in the world. “The prophecy chose her, Elara,” Kaelen said, his voice devoid of all emotion. It was the King speaking, not my mate. “Her mark is the key to restoring the barrier. Your presence… it interferes. It brings the cold.” “That’s not a mark, it’s a lie!” I cried, desperation making me reckless. “Feel our bond, Kaelen! It tells you the truth!” He flinched, a subtle tightening of his jaw that told me my words had struck home. For a second, a wild, impossible hope flared within me. But then he closed his eyes, and when he opened them, they were stone. “The pack’s survival comes before any single bond,” he declared, his voice echoing with the finality of a closing tomb. “Even one blessed by the Moon.” He raised his hand, and two of his Royal Guards seized my arms, their grip like iron. I struggled, a wild, guttural cry tearing from my throat as they dragged me toward the altar. “No! Kaelen, don’t do this!” He descended from the dais, his movements fluid and regal, every inch the King who would sacrifice anything for his people. He stopped before me, so close I could see the flecks of silver in his grey eyes. There was pain there, buried deep, but it was suffocated by a mountain of duty. “A King’s duty is to his pack,” he murmured, so low that only I could hear. “And my duty is to protect them from the cold you bring.” He reached out, not to comfort me, but to place his palm flat against my chest, directly over my heart. I knew what was coming. The Severing Ritual. A rite so cruel, so final, it had not been performed in centuries. It was reserved for the vilest of traitors. “I, Kaelen, Alpha of the Black Moon, reject this bond,” he intoned, the ritual words a blade to my soul. The golden thread that connected us flared violently. It felt like my very soul was being stretched on a rack. I screamed, a raw, agonizing sound that was swallowed by the rising wind. “I sever the tie of fate. I cast out the soul of the mate who has brought a curse upon this land.” His eyes blazed with a cold, silver light, the power of his Alpha command pouring into me, not as a comfort, but as a poison. The bond, our beautiful, sacred connection, began to fray. I felt it fraying, thread by golden thread, each snap a fresh wave of agony that ripped through me. It was not just the loss of him; it was the loss of a part of myself. The part that had been his since the day we met. “Let her be nameless. Let her be forgotten.” With a final, brutal push of his will, the bond shattered. The sound was silent, yet it was the loudest thing I had ever heard. An echoing void opened inside me, a hollow, freezing emptiness where his presence had once been. The pain was so immense, so absolute, that my vision turned white. I collapsed in the guards’ arms, a puppet with its strings cut, my body convulsing. Through the haze of my agony, I saw him turn his back on me and walk back to Selene’s side, the picture of a king who had made a necessary, noble sacrifice. “The law has been spoken,” the High Priest’s voice boomed over my ragged gasps. “The curse has been purged from the Alpha. Now, the vessel of that curse must be returned to the ice from whence it came.” The guards hauled me to my feet. My legs wouldn't hold me. They dragged me past the terrified faces of my pack, past the dying embers of the ritual fire, to the edge of the grove. There, yawning before us, was the Ice Maw—a bottomless chasm, a sheer drop into the frozen heart of the mountains, where nothing survived. They held me at the precipice. The wind howled up from the depths, a song of oblivion. It clawed at my robes, biting at my exposed skin with teeth of ice. I lifted my head, my last bit of strength spent on one final look at him. He stood on the dais, watching. His face was a mask of cold granite, unmoving, unfeeling. He was my king, and he was my executioner. He had ripped my soul in half and was now throwing the pieces away. “For the good of the pack,” one of the guards muttered, more to himself than to me. Then, they let go. For a moment, I was suspended between the world that had rejected me and the frozen hell that awaited. The last thing I saw was Kaelen’s face, impassive and distant, as Selene tucked herself possessively against his side. Then the abyss took me, and I was falling, falling into an endless, silent, and unforgiving cold.
