CHAPTER ONE
Katherine stood by the road side hoping a cab passed by soon.
She sighed, unlocking her phone to check the time and it read 7:45.
God. She was going to be late to work on a Monday. Thanks to her car which decided to suddenly not start up.
Katherine paced about impatiently and then, she heard the sound of a car approaching and raised her head but she bit her lip in disappointment as it was not a cab.
Katherine locked her phone, unzipped her bag and dipped her phone inside her purse. She was about raising her gaze when water splashed on her body from nowhere..
“ Oh my god! ” Katherine cried, her eyes shut. In a second, she snapped her eyes back open to see a black SUV screeching to a halt.
Katherine fumed and walked briskly to the car and the door opened as a guy stepped out of the car.
“ For heavens sake. Are you freaking blind? ” She yelled.
“ Uh... No. I clearly didn't do this on purpose. ” The male voice said, stepping closer into a clearer view.
Katherine scoffed.
“ You didn't do it on purpose? You were clearly driving recklessly. ”
“ And maybe you shouldn't have been standing carelessly on the road. ” He retorted.
“ What? Are you seriously trying to say this is my fault? ” Katherine asked.
“ No, miss. All I am saying is that it's clearly not mine. ”
“ So, what? You stopped to tell me that? Like how ridiculous can you be huh? ” Katherine lashed at him.
“ What were you expecting? For me to apologize to you? " He asked, raising a brow at her.
“ Well you should at least pretend you are sorry. ” Katherine shot back in anger and he chuckled.
“ One thing I don't do is... pretend. So I am going to be straight forward. You see, I am a business person. And I like to see everything as a transaction. I ruined your dress and what best way to compensate that? ” He asked and Katherine narrowed her brows in confusion.
He sighed, reaching a hand into his pocket and brought out a few dollars.
“ Here... That should be enough to replace your dress. ” He said advancing the money to her and Katherine scoffed in utter disbelief.
“ You know what? You are a jerk! ” She cursed at him and rushed back into the house, leaving him standing rooted to the ground.
“ Did she just turn down money? ” He asked no one in particular.
He stared at her house and scoffed, shaken by her behavior. Turning on his heels, he walked back to his car. Hopped in and drove off.
Katherine hissed in anger as she stared at her dress which was all messed up.
It was the most precious thing in her life and she can't believe some lunatic from god knows where just came to ruin it.
And to think he couldn't even apologize.
Katherine bit her lip hard, fighting her tears back.
And work. The reminder of that had glancing at her wrist watch.
“ Damnit! ” She cursed, rushing up the stairs to change.
In no time, she was out, slamming the door to her room shut and walking briskly down the alley. She arrived at the stairs and descended it. She got to the door and grabbed it open, stepping out. She shut the door behind.
Luckily, in no time, she saw a cab and boarded it.
Katherine checked her wristwatch which read 8:00.
“ s**t! ” She muttered.
“ Can you drive faster, please? ” Katherine said.
“ Okay ” The driver muttered, stepping on the accelerator.
In no time, the cab pulled over at a building. Katherine paid the cab man and she hurriedly alighted the car.
She walked briskly in the quiet parking lot.
She halted when she got to the elevator and punched into a button. She waited a while and it dinged open. The people in stepped out and she walked in, watching the elevator door close.
She arrived and stepped out of the elevator. She started towards a place where few workers could be seen.
Each of them muttered a greeting which she responded to.
Katherine finally arrived at her space and she gently placed her bag on the table. She raised her gaze to a frosty glass door which in it was a very large office. And on the chair, seated her Boss, Pete Mackenzie chatting with another guy.
“ Oh, Katherine. You are in trouble. ” She murmured and walked to the door.
Katherine raised a hand and placed a knock to the door.
“ Come in. ” A voice said and Katherine walked in.
Her boss's gaze met hers and a slight frown crossed his face while Katherine managed to pull a smile.
“ Good mor - ” Katherine's word's were cut short and she stopped dead on her track when her gaze met the eyes of her boss's guest.
It was no other than the guy who had just spilled dirt water on her dress earlier. A deep frown crossed her face as he stared back at her with a look of surprise.
“ You are late ” Pete said and Katherine blinked, snapping her gaze to her boss.
I… I am sorry sir ” She stuttered
“ You are never late, Katherine. What happened? ” Pete asked and she swallowed, glancing at the guy whose gaze hadn't left hers for a second.
“ Uh… I… I had a pre engagement. I am sorry. ” Katherine said, returning her gaze to her boss.
“ It definitely won't repeat itself, ” She added.
“ It better not. ” Pete said and she glanced at his guest.
“ Well, meet my business partner, Scott McCall. ”
“ Oh, Uh… but it's not scheduled here that you would be having a meeting with him. ” Katherine said.
“ That's right. It was a last minute decision. And I am very glad to have him. ”
“ I see. ” Katherine muttered, looking at Scott.
“ Scott, meet my Personal Assistant. She hadn't started working here when we did business back in the day together. ” Pete said.
“ Explains the unfamiliarity. ” Scott said in sarcasm.
“ Nice to meet you, sir. ” Katherine retorted in a sarcastic tone.
“ Likely. ” Scott said, holding her gaze.
