Chapter Twenty-Two Last stands. Nearly all of our motley group had made it across the hall and into the stairwell when a harsh voice cut through the chaos. “Hey!” a thug in a leather jacket spat from near the opposite end of the hallway. I knew they’d respond to the noise but hoped they’d take longer. I turned in time to see him bring up his weapon—a pistol. I grabbed the last of the girls still sprinting across the hallway and spun her into cover and through the fire exit stairwell door. The crack of gunfire followed moments later. The spit of bullets whistling past my head. I pressed myself against a slim section of wall jutting out, no wider than my body and answered with three rounds of my own pistol, keeping the thug at bay.
