chapter 1
The rain was falling in heavy sheets, blurring the neon lights of the city into streaks of red and gold. Elena Romano tightened her coat around herself as she hurried across the nearly empty street, heels clicking against the pavement. She hated walking home this late, but the bookstore had been busy, and closing alone meant it was nearly midnight before she finally locked the register. Her father always warned her never linger after dark in this city. The streets belonged to men whose names carried more fear than any weapon. Men like the Marcellos. Men she only heard about in hushed whispers, their power stretching through every corner of the city like roots of a poisonous tree. Elena had no interest in that world. She wanted quiet. She wanted safety. She wanted a life far away from everything the mafia touched. And yet… fate had a cruel way of laughing at her plans. Halfway down the street, she sensed it footsteps behind her. Slow, steady, deliberate. Her breath caught. The bookstore district was usually dead at this hour. Every instinct told her not to turn around, but her fingers tightened on her bag, and her pace quickened. The footsteps followed. Elena’s pulse raced. She ducked into a narrow alley, hoping to cut through to her apartment two blocks over. The sound of rain splashing against puddles echoed around her, but the footsteps didn’t fade. Whoever was following her wasn’t giving up. She turned. Three men stepped into the mouth of the alley. Strangers. Their clothes were rough, their smirks darker than the shadows they emerged from. “Well, what do we have here?” one of them drawled, his voice carrying over the storm. “Pretty little thing shouldn’t be walking alone.” Elena’s throat went dry. She clutched her bag closer, backing away, her mind screaming for her legs to run but the alley was a trap. The second man chuckled. “Relax, sweetheart. We just want to… talk.” Elena knew exactly what they wanted. And she knew exactly how this would end if she didn’t get out now. Her heart thundered as the first man stepped closer. “Don’t scream. No one will hear you over the rain.” She did scream. A sharp, desperate cry tore from her throat—cutting through the storm and for a heartbeat, the men froze. But then they advanced again, cruel grins plastered on their faces. That’s when she saw him. At the far end of the alley, framed by the neon glow of a broken streetlamp, a figure leaned casually against the wall. He hadn’t been there before or maybe he had, blending into the shadows so completely that she hadn’t noticed. Tall. Broad-shouldered. A black suit that seemed immune to the rain. His face was cast half in shadow, but the glint of his eyes pierced through the dark, locking on to hers with a calm intensity that made her breath catch. The strangers noticed him too. “Back off, man,” one snapped, though his voice wasn’t nearly as confident as before. The figure didn’t move. Didn’t flinch. Instead, he straightened slowly, adjusting the cuffs of his suit like he had all the time in the world. “Walk away,” he said, his voice low, steady, and dangerous. The men exchanged uncertain glances. “Who the hell are you?” one demanded. The stranger stepped forward, the rain breaking around him as though even the storm knew better than to touch him. “Someone you don’t want to know,” he replied. The first man laughed, but it was thin, forced. “Tough guy, huh? You think you scare us?” The stranger’s eyes sharpened, cold as steel. “If I didn’t scare you, you wouldn’t be shaking.” Elena blinked and in the next instant, it was over. A blur of movement. A crunch of bone. A shout of pain drowned by the storm. One man hit the ground, gasping for air. Another stumbled back, clutching his arm at an unnatural angle. The last man ran, disappearing into the night without a single glance behind. Elena froze, her bag clutched so tightly her knuckles ached. She should have run too. She should have bolted the moment the men fell. But she didn’t. She couldn’t. Her eyes were locked on the stranger. He stood over the fallen men, calm as if he’d merely swatted away flies. No heavy breathing. No hesitation. Just… control. Absolute, terrifying control. Then his eyes shifted to her. “You’re safe now,” he said. Elena’s chest heaved. She wanted to thank him, to ask his name, to understand why someone like him had appeared out of nowhere but the words tangled in her throat. He stepped closer, his gaze sweeping over her as if memorizing every detail. There was no softness in his eyes, no comfort. Only sharp calculation, like he was already deciding if she was a problem… or a secret worth keeping. “What’s your name?” he asked. Elena hesitated. Something told her not to answer. Something told her that speaking her name aloud would tie her to him in ways she wasn’t ready for. But under the weight of his stare, the truth slipped out. “Elena.” His lips curved not a smile, but something darker
