CHAPTER 8 — THE MEMORY “Now I know where I know you from.” My heart stopped. For a few seconds, I couldn't move. He remembered me. That was the only thought in my head. I quickly forced myself to calm down. I couldn't let him see how nervous I was. If Williams remembered me from that night, I didn't know what would happen to me. I took a slow breath and looked at him. “I remember you from last Friday morning,” he said. I blinked. huh?? “Last Friday?” “Yes.” He leaned back in his chair. “You were crossing the expressway without paying attention. My car almost hit you.” I stared at him. Then it suddenly made sense. He wasn't talking about the hotel. He was talking about the accident. My mouth opened slightly. “Oh.” All the fear I had been feeling suddenly disappeared. I had been panicking for nothing. He remembered me because his car nearly knocked me down. That was all. I quickly pulled myself together. So it was his car. I quickly comport myself. “Yes, sir. I remember.” Williams studied my face. “You weren't seriously injured, were you?” “No, sir.” “Are you sure?” “Yes. I was fine.” He nodded. “The driver told me you accepted the money he gave you.” “Yes, sir.” “Was it enough to take care of your injuries?” I nodded quickly. “Yes, sir. I didn't need much treatment it was just minor injury” “Good.” I lowered my eyes. “I apologize for putting you in trouble . He gave a small nod. “It's fine.” I nodded. There was an uncomfortable silence between us. In my mind I was thinking what If what he remembered was that night. I needed to get out of there. I had already spent enough time in his office, and I didn't want to risk saying or doing anything that could make him suspicious of me again. Williams looked down at his phone as it rang.. I use that opportunity to step toward the door. I was almost there when his voice stopped me. “Lisa.” I froze. I turned around. “Yes, sir?” “Bring me the tablet from the coffee table near the window.” I looked toward the table. “Yes, sir.” I walked over and picked up the tablet. I carried it toward his desk, trying to keep my hands steady. When I reached the desk, I placed it carefully on the table. Unfortunately, my hand brushed against one of his pens. The pen rolled across the table and fell to the floor. Why did I keep making mistakes around this man? Williams was already on a phone call, so he didn't say anything. He simply shifted his chair slightly and continued talking. I bent down to pick up the pen. It was the closest I had been to him since I started working at M&S Global. As I stood beside him, I could smell his cologne. It was clean and strong, with a deep masculine scent that I couldn't quite describe. For a second, I forgot what I was doing. Then I quickly straightened up. I placed the pen on the desk, but Williams looked at me and made a small hand gesture. He wanted me to give it to him. I picked it up again and placed it in his hand. He nodded and continued with his phone call. Then he gestured for me to wait. I stood quietly beside the desk. A few moments later, he ended the call and placed his phone on the desk. His eyes fell on me. “What perfume are you wearing?” I was surprised by the question. “My perfume?” “Yes.” I touched the scarf around my neck. “It's a homemade fragrance.” He looked at me. “Homemade?” I nodded. “Yes. I make it myself.” “What fragrance is it?” I hesitated. “Jasmine” Something changed in his expression. I immediately became nervous. “I'm sorry if the smell is bothering you,” I said. “It's not an expensive perfume.” He shook his head. “It doesn't bother me.” I nodded. “Okay.” He looked back at his tablet. “You can go.” I didn't need to be told twice. “Yes, sir.” I turned and left his office. Once I closed the door behind me, I released a breath. I walked back to my desk and sat down. My hands were still slightly shaky. At least he hadn't recognized me. But the good thing is that he remembered the accident and nothing else. I tried to convince myself that everything was fine. But something about his question about my perfume bothered me. Why had he asked? It seems like as I am perceiving his scent that he smelled mine too. I pushed the thought aside and returned to work. --- Inside his office, Williams remained seated behind his desk. He looked at the documents in front of him, but he wasn't really reading them. His mind was somewhere else. Jasmine. The fragrance Lisa was wearing felt strangely familiar. He had smelled it before. He was sure of it. But he couldn't remember where. He leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes for a moment. Nothing came to mind. He opened his eyes and continued working. There was no reason to think about it. It was only a perfume. He had more important things to deal with. His morning was filled with meetings and reports, so he pushed the thought away. However, the strange feeling remained in the back of his mind. By the afternoon, he began to develop a headache. He rubbed his forehead and leaned back in his chair. The pain became more uncomfortable. He picked up his phone and called his personal assistant. “Bring me a pain reliever.” “Yes, sir.” A few minutes later, his PA brought him the medication and a bottle of water. He took the medicine and returned to his work. After some time, he rested his head on the desk. His eyes closed. The office became quiet. Then, without warning, a memory flashed through his mind. A hotel room. The faint scent of jasmine. A woman standing near the bed. She looked nervous and shy.. But the memory disappeared. Williams slowly lifted his head. He frowned. “Strange.” He rubbed his forehead. “Why is this memory coming back now?” He sat quietly for a moment. Then he remembered Mira. Her perfume. Jasmine. The same fragrance. His expression became thoughtful. He remembered the night he spent with Mira last week. He remembered how she had smelled that night. Williams leaned back in his chair. It had to be the perfume. That was the only explanation he could think of. Mira had worn the same Jasmine fragrance that night. And now Lisa was wearing jasmine. He looked toward the office door. Could it simply be a coincidence? There was something about Lisa that felt familiar, but he couldn't place it. He picked up the document on his desk and tried to continue working. For now, he decided to forget about it.
