CHAPTER 7 — I KNOW YOU

1335 Words
“No, no, no. Me meet the boss before? How is that possible?” The question came out of my mouth too quickly. I looked at Amanda and tried to keep my face calm. “I can't even afford the kind of places he visits. I was just overwhelmed because I didn't expect myself to be working under the CEO and it was my first day too.” Amanda watched me for a few seconds. Then she nodded. “I understand.” I smiled nervously. “I'm sorry about earlier.” “Don't worry about it,” she said. I nodded and turned back to my computer. I was relieved that she didn't ask any more questions. I had managed to avoid the first problem. For the rest of the morning, I focused on my work. Amanda showed me how to organize the documents, update the CEO's schedule, answer calls, and prepare the files he needed for his meetings. At lunchtime, I looked around before turning to Amanda. “Where do I get lunch?” “The cafeteria is downstairs and the meal is free . I looked at her in surprise. “What do you mean?” “Employees on the CEO floor have free meals at the company cafeteria.” I stared at her. “Free?” She smiled. “Yes. Your meals will be charged to the company.” “That is amazing.” Amanda laughed softly. I couldn't imagine getting used to something like that. Now I was being told that I could eat lunch without worrying about the cost. As I walked toward the cafeteria, I found myself thinking about how lucky I was. I wished I could stay at M&S Global for a long time. There were so many benefits. The salary. The allowances. The medical insurance. The accommodation. The free meals. It was the kind of job I had always hoped for. But there was one problem. My new boss. I had heard enough rumors about him to know that he wasn't someone I wanted to make an enemy of. If he found out that Mira had manipulated him and that I had been involved, I didn't know what he would do. And the worst part was that he had already said there was something familiar about me. That made everything more dangerous. I decided that I would work for just one month. I would collect my salary. Then I would quit. It wasn't what I wanted, but I couldn't see another way out. I ordered my lunch and found a quiet place to sit. After taking a few bites, I picked up my phone and called James. He answered after a few rings. “Hello.” “James, I need to tell you something.” His voice immediately became serious. “What happened?” “Nothing happened right now.” “Then why do you sound like that?” I looked around the cafeteria. “I want to talk to you after work.” There was a short silence. “Is it serious?” “Yes.” “Okay. I'll see you after work.” “Thank you.” I ended the call. I couldn't keep this secret alone. It was choking me. Every time I saw Williams, I remembered that night. Every time he looked at me, I wondered if he would eventually recognize me. I needed someone I could trust. And I knew better than to tell my parents. My mother would never keep quiet if she knew what Mira had done. She would confront Mira and her mother immediately. My mother had worked for Mira's family for fifteen years as a cleaner and housekeeper. She stopped working there two years ago because of her health. After I finished school, Mira's mother offered me a job at their company. That was how I ended up working as Mira's PA. At the time, I thought it was a good opportunity. I never imagined it would lead me into this situation. James was different. I knew he could keep a secret. That was why I decided to tell him everything. After work, we met at a small restaurant near my office. The moment James saw my face. he rushed to me. “What happened?” “I need to tell you something but I need you to promise me.” “What?” “You can't tell anyone what I'm about to say.” He leaned forward. “Lisa, you're scaring me.” “Just promise me.” “I promise.” I took a deep breath. Then I told him everything. I told him about that night. I told him about Mira's plan. I told him how she had manipulated me into sleeping with her fiancé. I told him about the threat she had made. And finally, I told him that the man from that night was now my boss. I also told him that I want to quit. James remained silent for a moment. Then he rubbed his forehead. “Lisa, this is serious. "That's why I want to quit". I said. "Lisa I don't think you should ". “James, I'm working directly under him.” “And?” “And what if he remembers me?” James leaned back. “Then you deal with it if it happens. Pretend you don't know” I shook my head. “You don't understand he is mira's fiance.” “I understand more than you think and from what I have heard about him he is not the kind of person to mix bussiness with pleasure.” He looked at me seriously. “This job is an opportunity you may not get again.” I didn't answer. “You told me the salary is twice what you expected.” “Yes.” “And there are allowances?” “Yes.” “Medical insurance?” “Yes.” “Accommodation?” “Yes.” He shook his head. “How many jobs do you think will give you all of that as a beginner?” I looked down. “I don't know.” “Exactly.” He leaned forward. “Don't quit after few days.” “I was thinking of staying for one month.” “One month isn't enough , at least six months.” I looked at him. “Six months?” “Yes.” He pointed at me. “Six months at a company like M&S Global will look good on your resume and you will even save enough to start your fashion bussiness.” I remained quiet. “You don't have to make a decision today,” he continued. “Give yourself time.” I sighed. “I'll think about it.” “Good.” I nodded. His advice stayed in my mind that night. The next morning, I returned to M&S Global. I was still nervous when I stepped into the CEO's office, but I wasn't as terrified as I had been on my first day. Amanda wasn't there yet. She had a doctor's appointment that morning, so I had to handle the morning routine myself. I prepared Williams's coffee, arranged the files, and checked his schedule. I made sure everything was ready before he arrived. When Williams entered his office, I followed him in with the necessary files. I placed the coffee on the table and stood a short distance away. “Good morning, sir.” “Good morning.” I opened the folder and list out all appointment he had for the day . he was just silent. I paused. Williams wasn't looking at the documents. He was looking at me. I swallowed. “Sir?” He didn't answer. He continued staring at me. My fingers tightened around the folder. Then he slowly leaned back in his chair. His eyes remained on my face. For a moment, the room was completely silent. Then he spoke. “Now I know where I know you from.” My heart stopped.
