Chapter 1 Trapped
"Tell me, Rachel, if my brother's watching us from heaven right now, what do you think he'd say?" Davis Ward's breath brushed against my ear.
One of his legs forced its way between mine, his knee bent slightly as he pinned me against the sofa in an aggressively possessive posture.
His thumb slowly kneaded the sensitive spot at the back of my neck, forcing me to tilt my head back and expose my vulnerable throat.
Just beyond the wall, the chanting from the memorial hall was still echoing through the mansion.
Megan Ward, my vicious mother-in-law, the chairman's wife of the Ward Group, was leading a crowd in mourning for Jones Ward, the eldest son of the family, my husband in name only, who had died in a car accident.
The scent of white chrysanthemums drifted in through the c***k beneath the door, but it couldn't mask the smell of tobacco clinging to Davis, along with something darker.
My entire body was stiff. I clenched the sofa cushions beneath me, terrified of making a sound.
One of Davis's hands held a knife.
At that moment, the cold tip slipped beneath the collar of my black silk mourning dress, tracing a path down the pale valley between my breasts before finally stopping at my lower abdomen, drawing slow circles.
"Why are you shaking?" His thigh pressed harder against me.
"When you begged me in the basement the night before, you seemed pretty damn brave. So what's wrong now? Why are you trembling like this?"
My tears dripped silently onto the sofa.
Outside, Megan's shrill cries rang throughout the estate over the microphone.
"My son! Your body isn't even cold yet! If you knew someone was cheating on you in your own home, how am I supposed to keep living?"
Davis's expression changed.
Suddenly, he lowered his head and bit my earlobe. His tongue brushed over the row of teeth marks before he whispered against my skin.
"You hear that, Rachel? If you make a sound and alert everyone outside, if they walk in and find you half-dressed and clinging to me..."
He paused, his voice dangerously soft.
"Do you think they'll let you walk out of here alive tonight?"
