The knight in the dark: I
Lucy leaned against a tree, her chest heaving as she gulped in air. She turned back, and in the distance, she could see the faint flash of headlights - her pursuers, still hot on her trail. The sight sent a chill down her spine. She'd been running for hours, and the exhaustion was catching up. Her legs hurt and were swollen, her muscles screaming in protest. As she caught her breath, a treacherous thought crept in: maybe it was time to stop running. Give herself up, and face whatever consequences awaited her. At least then, she'd be done with the constant fear, the endless fleeing. She pushed the thought away, the memories of "back there" flooding her mind - the cold, the darkness, the helplessness. A fresh wave of adrenaline surged through her, and she straightened, her legs finding strength she didn't know she had. The pain receded, replaced by a single, driving force: escape. She took off into the night, her feet pounding the ground, her past chasing her just as surely as the men behind her. The trees blurred together, a dark green haze as she sprinted through the woods, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She didn't know where she was going, only that she couldn't stop. She burst out of the woods and onto a main road, a stretch of asphalt she'd never laid eyes on before. She skidded to a brief halt, her gaze darting left, right, and straight ahead into the darkness of another wooded stretch. Each direction seemed to lead into the unknown, and she didn't know what lay waiting for her - more forest to get lost in, or a shortcut to safety. A flurry of questions bombarded her mind, but she knew if she got stuck thinking, she'd be caught. With a lightning-fast glance both ways, she picked right, her feet pounding the rough road surface as she sprinted into the night, praying she'd spot something - headlights, a porch light, anything. As she ran, the road seemed to stretch on forever, the darkness pressing in around her. She could hear the distant rumble of an engine, and her heart skipped a beat - were they coming for her? She dared a glance over her shoulder, but the road behind her was empty. The sound grew louder, and then a pair of headlights appeared on the horizon, heading straight for her. Her instincts screamed at her to flag it down, but what if... what if it was them? The thought of the car being her pursuers' sent a chill through her veins, freezing her in place. In that moment, she knew it was over. Caught, she'd either be killed outright or turned into a shadow of herself, stripped of whatever little autonomy she had left. The possibilities churned in her mind like a nightmare – the torture, the manipulation, the loss of what's left of her freedom. Though she'd expected as much, fear drained her legs of strength, paralyzing her. Outrunning a car seemed impossible. Lost in that dark spiral of thoughts, she didn't hear the horn blaring in warning. Before she could react, the car hit her, sending her rolling on the ground till she slammed her head on the hard asphalt. Pain exploded, and everything went dark. She came to with a jolt, groaning as her head throbbed in agony. Where was she? What happened? Fragments came back – the woods, the road, the fear. She heard the car's door open and then jam shut. A tall figure stood looking down at her. Then a face swam into view above her, worried eyes peering down. "Hey, can you hear me?" a voice asked, distant and echoy. She tried to nod, but pain laced through her head like a scream. Again, the voice asked, "Ma'am, can you hear me?" Though she was in pain, she knew she'd heard that voice somewhere but couldn't quite place where, or if the person was one of those pursuing her. She squinted her eyes to get a good look at the person, but the car's headlights were blinding, making it hard to see. Lucy thought to herself that maybe it was her guardian angel, but she laughed, believing if anything she'd be going to hell for all she'd done. Then the voice shouted, "Lucy?! Is that really you?" Lucy's heart trembled. No one apart from her pursuers' boss knew her real name, "Lucy". The rest knew her as Mirabel. She hadn't heard anyone call her Lucy in a very long time. And the only thing worse than getting caught was getting caught by the boss – he'd make her wish she was dead with the torture he'd give her. But then the face bent a little closer, and she saw a face that looked so familiar. Was it Michael, her long-lost best friend and lover? No, it was impossible. She made herself believe he wouldn't have any reason to come all the way out here. But before she could do or say anything, everywhere went dark. The pain had finally gotten to her. As the stranger carried her to the front passenger seat, his strong, firm hands wrapped securely around her, yet surprisingly gentle, like a warm blanket on a cold night. His palms were wide and solid, with a reassuring grip that made her feel tiny and protected. She felt a flutter as he pulled her close, his fingers brushing against her skin, sending shivers down her spine. He laid her down gently, and she felt the softness of the car seat envelop her. The door closed with a soft thud, and she was surrounded by the scent of leather and something else – a familiar scent, but she couldn't place it. The engine roared to life, and the car began to move, jolted her back to reality. She tried to open her eyes, but her lids were heavy. As she drifted off, she heard a voice, whispering her name, "Lucy... it's going to be okay." As she drifted in and out of consciousness, Lucy felt the car moving, the hum of the engine a distant drone. The stranger's voice was a low murmur, speaking on the phone, but she couldn't make out the words. Her head pounded, and her body ached, but the pain was a dull thud compared to the fear that still gripped her heart. As he drove frantically, Lucy bounced unconscious in the passenger seat, the sound of gunshots still echoing in his mind. He'd gotten her in just in time; the boot was riddled with holes. He glanced at her, his expression softening for a moment before hardening again as he scanned the road, looking for an escape route. He spotted a narrow alley and took it, speeding down the dark passage. But as he checked his mirrors, he saw headlights – they were being followed. He turned onto a main road, trying to lose them in traffic, but they were relentless. That's when he noticed the marks on Lucy's arms, bruises and cuts. His gut twisted with anger and pity. What had she gone through? He reached out to gently shift her torn shirt, checking for more injuries, and that's when he saw the bright lights ahead – another gang blocking the road. He slammed on the brakes, and the car skidded to a stop. A gun was pressed to his window, and he knew he had no choice. He shoved a paper into Lucy's hands, and as he was dragged out, he locked the doors and left the key on the armrest. Now he's standing in front of the leader, surrounded by hostile faces, pipes and sticks raised. The leader, a dark-skinned man with a strong, chizeled face and a built body, sat atop a car's hood, a gun pointed at the stranger. His eyes blazed with a fiery intensity, and a killing intent radiated from him like a palpable force. "What do you want with her?" the stranger growled, trying to keep his cool. The leader's gaze narrowed, his gun hand steady. "You don't know, do you? You just picked up a whole lotta trouble." The stranger's eyes locked onto the leader's, his mind racing. He knew he couldn't outrun them, not with Lucy vulnerable in the car. He took a slow breath, trying to read the situation. "What's this about?" he asked, his voice firm but calm. The leader, a scar twisting his cheek, sneered, "You know exactly what's going on. This girl's got something we need. And you're gonna give it to us." The stranger's gaze flicked to Lucy, still unconscious in the car. He knew he had to protect her, no matter what. "I don't know what you're talking about," he repeated, buying time. The leader raised an eyebrow, his gun hand steady. "Don't play dumb. We know she's the one. You're either with us, or you're against us." The stranger's eyes narrowed, his decision made. He'd protect Lucy, even if it meant taking on the whole gang. As the leader's words hang in the air, the stranger's eyes dart to the car, checking on Lucy. In a swift motion, he pulls out a phone from his pocket and tosses it to the ground, smashing it under his heel. "No phone, no call, no backup. Looks like it's just us then." The gang's taken aback, confused by the sudden move. The leader's face darkens, "You think that's gonna save you?" The stranger smiles, cold and calculated, "It's not about saving me. It's about keeping her safe." The leader's face turns red with rage, and he raises his gun, aiming it at the stranger's head. "You're making a big mistake, friend," he growls. The stranger's eyes never leave the leader's, his expression unreadable. He's thinking he's got no way out, but he's not going down without a fight. His gaze flicks to the car, checking on Lucy, and he knows he's got to keep them distracted. The leader's finger tightens on the trigger, and the air is thick with tension. What's gonna break the standoff? With a swift movement of the leader's hand with the gun, two men start heading towards the car. A cold sweat breaks out on the stranger's forehead, but his expression remains a mask of calm. He knows he's playing a deadly game, one wrong move could cost either of their lives or worst both their lives. He knows he has to do something fast, or else it'll be over. He decides to bring up a conversation, buying time. "What do you really want?" he asks, his voice steady. "What is it that she's got?" The leader's gaze narrows, and he c***s his head to the side, clearly intrigued. "Ah, you don't know?" he says, a sly grin spreading across his face. "Well, well, well. Looks like we're gonna have some fun figuring this out together." The men approaching the car slow down, awaiting the leader's next command. What's the leader's next move?. The men approaching the car slow down, awaiting the leader's next command. What's the leader's next move? The boss nodded his head in affirmation, and the men continued their approach towards the car. The stranger's eyes flicked to Lucy, still unconscious, and he prayed she'd wake up soon. For how long would she be unconscious?, he thought. He knew he'd bought himself a small reprieve, but for how long? Unaware of his fate, he quickly assessed the situation: 30 men, only two with guns - the boss and the man beside him, both with guns pointed at him, he could try and fight them off but if bullets went flying in Lucy's direction it could hit her, which he wanted to avoid. The other two men were trying to open the car door, and he feared for Lucy's safety. The stranger cleared his throat, trying to keep his cool. "What if I get what you need from her?" he asked, stalling for time. The leader's grin grew wider, and he leaned forward, intrigued. "Oh? You think you can get it? What's your plan, friend?" The stranger didn't even know what it was they wanted, he only knew he couldn't let them take Lucy. He then replied, "I could talk to her, but tell your men to leave the car and come back here." The stranger's words hung in the air, and for a moment, the leader just stared at him. The men by the car door hesitated, looking at the leader for further instructions. The leader's laughter boomed through the night air, echoing off the surrounding buildings. "So, we got a man with balls here," he chuckled, his expression darkening. "Men that are brave are the fastest to the grave," he added, his voice dripping with menace. But then, his expression changed, and he whistled, signalling for the men to return. They reluctantly left the car and rejoined the group, their eyes fixed on the stranger. The leader's gaze narrowed. "You've got 30 seconds to convince me why I shouldn't just take what I want." The stranger took a deep breath, his mind racing. What could he say to save Lucy? Just before he could utter a word, the leader's phone rang. When he picked it, the next words that came out his mouth sent shivers down his spine. The boss was talking to another, telling them that Lucy and he were with them and that they could come and take the package, referring to her and him. Then something was said over the phone which made the boss send a cold, menacing glance right into his soul. He thought to himself "was he and Lucy ever going to make it out alive? He had no weapon and one wrong move, he'd be shot dead without hesitation. And if he were to keep stalling, the backup would probably come and take him as their captive and probably kill him. But what option was there? Lucy still seemed to be unconscious, so she hadn't yet seen the paper he placed in her hand". His hands began shaking at the thought of being unalived, but he had to be brave. What could he do? Then the thought hit him, he could run. But even if he did that, will the boss ever let him escape after all he's seen???... Boom! A loud noise was heard that echoed through the darkness of the night. The boss had fired a shot at an inch from his leg. He was off the call, his gaze burning with anger. "You were saying?" he growled. The stranger's eyes flicked to the car, and relief washed over him, Lucy was conscious. She scanned the paper, her eyes widening as she read the message. Her gaze met his, a spark of understanding passing between them. The note read thus: The note read: "At the slightest opportunity, run. Phone's under your seat, taped. Pull seatbelt fast 3x, compartment opens above. Gun inside. Phone has map; someone'll call. Not sure you're who I think, but I'll risk it. Key's on armrest. Don't waste this." Her eyes dropped back to the paper, her hands moving subtly to the seatbelt. The leader's voice barked: "Talk. Now." The stranger's eyes locked onto the leader's, his voice laced with a mix of desperation and calculation. "I'm your best chance," he said, his words tumbling out. "I don't know what she has, but I'm guessing it's valuable. Let her go, and I'll get it for you." He swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing, as he tried to keep his cool. His hands were tied behind his back, but he shifted slightly, trying to appear more confident than he felt. The leader raised an eyebrow, intrigued by the stranger's words. He leaned forward, a sly grin spreading across his face. "Oh? You think you can get it? What's your plan, friend?" His tone was mocking, but the stranger detected a hint of curiosity. The stranger took a deep breath, trying to read the situation. He knew he was walking a tightrope, but he had to keep the leader engaged. "I'll talk to her," he said, his voice steady. "I'll make her trust me, and I'll get what you want. Just promise her and my safety." He glanced at Lucy, still acting unconscious in the car, and prayed she'd stay that way, for now. The stranger's words hung in the air, but the leader just laughed, a cold, mirthless sound. "You think you're in a position to negotiate?" he sneered, his expression hardening. "I don't care about your money or your life. The boss wants Lucy back, and you're just a means to an end." The leader's phone rang, cutting him off. He answered, his expression changing from amusement to fury as he listened. His eyes narrowed, and he sent a cold, menacing glance at the stranger, then at Lucy. The stranger's heart skipped a beat – had they been discovered? But when he looked, Lucy was still acting unconscious, her chest rising and falling slowly. The leader's laughter boomed through the night, a chilling sound. "You're a fool," he spat, his eyes blazing with anger. "You don't even know what you're getting yourself into." He jumped off the car's hood, his movements swift and deadly. He took the gun from his subordinate and approached the stranger, the muzzle inches from his ears. The stranger's world narrowed to the sound of his own heartbeat as the leader fired twice, the shots deafening, the sound bursting his eardrums. Blood poured from his ears, and he stumbled back, his vision blurring. The leader hand's the gun back to his subordinate and returned to the car, his expression cold and calculating. "Let's start again," he said, his voice dripping with menace. "Tell me the truth this time. If you lie... I'll make sure you regret it." The stranger's eyes locked onto the leader's, his mind racing. What was he going to do? The leader's smile is like a cold splash of water, sending a shiver down the stranger's spine. "Tick-tock, tick-tock," he says, his voice dripping with menace, each word punctuating the air like a hammer blow. "You've got 14 minutes and 59 seconds left. Before the main gang comes to take both of you away." The stranger's eyes flick to Lucy, still pretending to be unconscious in the car, her chest rising and falling with a deceptive calmness. He knows he's running out of time, and the clock is ticking louder with every passing second. He quickly reassesses the situation: 30 men, only two with guns, including the leader, who looks like he's itching for an excuse to pull the trigger. But with Lucy awake, the dynamics have shifted. He can feel it – a spark of hope, a chance to turn the tables. The air is thick with tension, and the stranger knows he needs to act fast. A loud boom echoes in the background, making everyone jump, and the leader's face turns beet red with rage. "Thirteen minutes forty-eight seconds!" he bellows, his voice like a crack of thunder, the vein on his forehead bulging like it's about to burst. "Don't test my patience anymore, or the next shot will be through you." The threat hangs in the air, a promise of pain and chaos, and the stranger knows he's walking a tightrope with no safety net. The boss takes a deep breath in and out then he decides to go first, saying his name is Bernard 'cause he bends the toughest men to his will. He then asks the stranger for his own name. The stranger replies that his name is Daniel. The boss also asks Daniel how and where he knows the girl. Daniel answers that he's not sure but he believes she is someone important. At that statement the boss sends a fierce glance at Daniel. He then asks Daniel why does he think that the girl is important. Daniel takes a quick guess and says that she probably has something important but he doesn't quite know. The boss looks at his watch and he says 10 minutes more before the main gang arrives. Daniel only did a quick look around, his eyes meet with Lucy for an instant then he smiled. Lucy didn't know how but she knew something that will change the tide of their situation was about to happen. Daniel looked back at the boss and smiled, but this time the smile had no fear behind it, rather renewed confidence. Lucy could never have imagined what was going to happen in the next few seconds could ever happen in front of her. The boss believed that Daniel had gone crazy out of fear so he waved his head to his men to hold Daniel. As the men were moving in, the boss told Daniel that he could have preferred to kill him but the leader wants to question him, plus Daniel gave him some fun and he hopes the leader will allow him to be the one to bend the answers out of him. When the men reach where Daniel was standing, the boss gives them a signal to wait. Then he sighs and admits he doesn't know what the girl has that makes her so special, but with her trying to escape, the boss will probably allow him and his men sleep with her and he's going to make sure Daniel has a front row seat to witness it all happen. Though Lucy could not hear the conversation between the men, she could see the way Daniel clenched his fist and the way he was shaking. Though she knew he could be afraid, this time the air around the men felt different — it felt heavier. But at the front, the boss's subordinates saw fire in Daniel's eyes. They could no longer see a man but a beast that's wanting to devour everything in its path. Though they didn't know why, they knew that Daniel was no longer the prey but rather they were the prey. They became even afraid to be behind him. But the boss smiled and gave a loud laugh into the empty darkness and the echoes went far. Then he looked at Daniel and asked him whether he pushed his buttons. Then he laughed again into the empty void of the night's sky. Then he told Daniel that since he doesn't know where he is, he's going to put him in his place, and a little broken teeth, swollen eyes and broken arms and legs won't stop him from talking 'cause they only need him to speak — the rest of his body is useless. The boss signals for his men to beat Daniel but they were hesitant. The boss shot one down instantly and told the rest to better start or they'll be next. When the second one got closer to Daniel, he realised that Daniel had clenched his fists so much that they started bleeding. When he saw this, he too hesitated for an instant and Daniel took advantage of that and bodied him into the guy by his side who was with the gun pointed at him. It fell down from the man's hand and Daniel wasted no time to pick it up. The man that was with the gun and the other two were moving backwards but Daniel told them to stand still, and he pointed the gun at the boss and the boss pointed his at Daniel. This was a stand off. The standoff holds for three heartbeats. Nobody breathes. Then Bernard laughs, not his cocky laugh from before, but something tight and ugly. "You're fast," Bernard says, thumb easing the hammer back on his gun. Daniel’s eyes flick to Bernard’s pistol, then down to his own. Same slide. Same grip. Same dull steel. Daniel knew he's guns _M1911s._ Both of them. With that in mind, it meant the boss had only four shots while he had seven. 7 rounds. The math was brutal, but it was math Daniel could work with. "But you forget something, _Daniel_," Bernard continues. He nods toward the car. One of his men is already at Lucy's door, a knife pressed to the glass, eyes fixed on Bernard waiting for orders. "You shoot me, she bleeds. I shoot you, she still bleeds. So how bad do you want to be a hero?" Daniel doesn't flinch. His eyes stay locked on Bernard, but his voice drops, cold enough to cut. "Two minutes, Bernard. That’s all this took. You sure you want to waste them talking?" The boss smiles. "Have you ever shot a gun before, hero?" Daniel answers. Bang. 6 rounds. One of Bernard’s men drops, clutching his leg, screaming. Daniel’s M1911 is already back on Bernard before the echo dies. "Time left," Daniel says. Bernard glances at his watch. That evil grin crawls back across his face. "Nine minutes more then the rest get here soon. What will you do when that happens?" Daniel doesn’t answer. He flicks his eyes to the car and gives Lucy a single, sharp nod. Bernard sees it. His mouth opens to bark an order, but he’s too slow. Inside the car, Lucy yanks the seatbelt. _Click._ A panel under the dash pops open. A matte black _Glock 17_ tumbles into her lap — polymer frame, 17-round mag, nothing like the old .45s the gang uses. Heavier firepower. The guy at her door is still staring at Bernard, waiting on a command he’ll never get. He doesn’t see Lucy move. She slams the car door open with force. The edge catches the guy in the knees and he drops. Before he can react, she shoves the door again and it hits his face. He crumples. Lucy’s out. Barely standing, swaying at the bonnet, but that Glock 17 is pointed straight at Bernard’s chest. _17+1 rounds._ Bernard’s eyes narrow. "Who the hell are you?" For the first time, Daniel looks him dead in the eye. "I'm a knight in shining armor. Here to save a damsel in distress." The air shifts. The predators became prey. The hunter became the hunted. Bernard laughs, thinking it’s the same gun as his. Same .45, same eight shots, same odds he’s already counted. "There were only 8 bullets in each M1911. I have more than 16 men. I still win either way." Daniel knows he’s right about the M1911s. But he also knows Lucy’s holding 18 rounds of 9mm. Bernard doesn’t. Not yet. Daniel glances at Lucy. She’s shaking. Pale. Her knuckles are white on the Glock’s grip, but her whole body trembles. She hasn’t recovered from the head injury, from the hours of running. This is all bluff, and one stiff breeze would drop her. No more thinking. Daniel starts stepping back toward the car, gun trained on Bernard. 6 rounds. Bernard sees his way out slipping. If Daniel escapes, the syndicate’s leader skins him alive. If he kills Daniel, maybe he dies too. Lose-lose. His finger cramps on the trigger — _BOOM._ A gunshot tears the night. Bernard’s M1911 explodes in his hand, metal shrapnel spraying. He howls, clutching a ruined, bloody palm. Bernard: 0 rounds. Disarmed. Lucy’s still pointing the Glock, but her eyes are glassy. That shot wasn’t skill. It was a dizzy stumble and pure luck. She’s holding her head with her free hand now, trying to stay upright. Lucy: 17 rounds left. Bernard, wild with pain and rage, screams at his men. "KILL HIM!" They charge. _Bang._ _5 rounds._ First man goes down, knee shattered. _Bang._ _4 rounds._ Second man folds. _Bang._ _3 rounds._ Third hits the dirt screaming. _Bang._ _2 rounds._ Fourth spins and drops. _Bang._ _1 round._ Fifth collapses. _Bang._ _0 rounds._ Sixth man crumples. _Click._ Empty. Daniel hurls the M1911 into the face of the seventh man and looks to Lucy. She’s trying to aim the Glock, but her arm won’t stop shaking. Her face twists in pain. That miracle shot was all she had. Daniel turns. Bernard’s back on the car hood, cradling his mangled hand, but his grin is back. Wider. Sinister. He locks eyes with Daniel and roars, "IT’S OVER!" The circle closes. Sticks. Pipes. Boots. They rain down on Daniel. Seven minutes until the main gang arrives. Daniel’s on the ground. Out of .45. Out of time. But Lucy’s still got 17 rounds. She’s still confused, still trying to pull herself together, but she’s running out of time. The men are inching closer and if she doesn’t make a move soon she’ll be captured again. Daniel wipes the blood running down his nose and spits again. He opens his mouth to call her name, but a stick swings at him. He dodges it with a swift movement. Another one swings. This time he is too slow. It hits him hard in the abdomen. He’s immediately out of breath, gasping for air. One of the boss’s subordinates takes the opportunity to throw a punch, but Daniel recovers fast and hits the guy low. The man drops instantly. In that brief moment Daniel screams Lucy’s name. Something clicks. Lucy’s eyes snap back to reality. _Bang._ _16 rounds._ One of the men coming for her stumbles. _Bang._ _15 rounds._ The second goes down clutching his leg. _Bang._ _14 rounds._ The third hits the dirt. _Bang._ _13 rounds._ The fourth crumples. Four down. One left heading for her, and Daniel’s still got a guy behind him raising a stick. Daniel smiles at her through the blood. Lucy faces Daniel. She doesn’t hesitate. _Bang._ _12 rounds._ The shot punches through the head of the man about to hit Daniel with the stick. He collapses behind him. The night goes quiet for a second. Just breathing and gun smoke. Daniel turns and sprints for the car. As he gets close, something feels off. He counts the bodies on the ground. Only four.
