CHAPTER 2

“Why?” Alex's eyes trailed her body like a hawk. The thought of the great Alexander Wilford at the mercy of this woman. Only she had the power to make him react this way. He had waited for years, he had respected her decisions, but not anymore. He had to use this on her, he didn't mind if she would hate him but he rather have her hate him with by his side. Now he had seen her he would never let her out of his sight. “Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten the contract you signed five years ago, Elara…the one that bound you to me.” Now it dawned on her, her brain had successfully erased that part of her interaction with him. How could she forget how she signed that document so carefree. “Alexander slid open a drawer and pulled out a slim black folder, the exact one she had once signed without reading the fine print”. Wiping the sweat off her head she said “I didn’t think you’d still keep that.” She was surprised that he still kept that document. Now something she had considered so insignificant was now very crucial. Alexander stared at her as she got lost in thought. His eyes trailed again and stopped at her lips. She was biting her lips as her eyes darted around in confusion which he found very funny. “I keep everything that belongs to me. And you should stop biting your lips, except you want me to give you the honor of...” “What!” She snapped, making him swallow his remaining words. She can't believe this man, he wants to kiss her?, In his dreams. She better end this illusion of his before it gets out of hand but with this document there is little she can do. The silence between them stretched, heavy and pulsing like the humid air before a thunderstorm. “You’re forgetting the clause, Lavender,” he said, voice like velvet laced with steel. “If you break it…” Lavender let out a heavy sigh “But you know that..” “Go,” he murmured, interrupting her, though his eyes said the opposite. “I’ll call you when I need your help.” She turned around without glancing at him and left his office swiftly. Pulling out his phone, he dialed a number and spoke coldly “Make her sign that document before the end of today”. Lavender stared at her reflection in the mirror, stretching her hands and she noticed several had bruises. She had clenched her fists so tightly, she had left faint bruises along her knuckles. After adjusting her hair and straightening her rumpled skirt, she went to her cubicle. While gathering her stuff to send to the company's human resource department, she was in a dilemma. She tapped her long, slender fingers against the desk, trying to steady her thoughts. “Hello, Miss Scott’ came the calm voice of Mrs. Jane, her department head. “Good morning ma,” she replied in a cheerful mood. “I am aware you have been briefed on the changes in this company, we have a new C.E.O and some structural changes are underway ”. The middle aged woman uttered calmly. Lavender, still smiling slightly, responded “I totally understand although it was too urgent and it threw me off balance a little”. She didn't want to add that she was considering quitting at this point. Without lingering on the issue, Mrs. Jane handed her a brown envelope. At this point she was sick of seeing these envelopes. Now what does this contain? she thought as she let out a deep sigh. “Is there a problem?” Mrs. Jane asked with a stretch of concern. “No… not at all, uhm… what's it for?” She asked to gather her thoughts together, her encounter with Alex has made her mind disheveled. “You just have to sign here,” She said as she pointed at specific places in the file which she brought out of the envelope. “It's to facilitate your transfer since you will no longer be working directly under me but the new boss” She added. Mrs. Jane's words about working with Alex made her stomach cringe, she felt nauseous. She would have to quit, she can't do it. Without thinking much she signed the document. “Thank you, you should be sad, the new boss is very generous and your pay exceeds the former” Mrs. Jane said before leaving. “Generous my foot” She muttered. She can't imagine working in the same space as him and now she had to move into her new office, which unfortunately is in his office. “I didn't even read those documents” She muttered. She sighed, realizing she had made the same impulsive mistake that had landed her in the furnace she was now burning in.” Her last encounter with Alex had left more than just her thoughts tangled. It had stripped her of control, and now the company was handing her straight back to him. Moments later, a message pinged on her desktop from the company's email. Subject: Office Relocation "Please report to Office 505 with your personal belongings. New workstation assigned under Executive Division." Her throat tightened. Office 505. Alex’s domain. She planned on threatening Alex with her resignation if he doesn't stop tormenting her. For now all she could do was pack up her belongings into a box - her Lavender plant, coffee mug and a picture frame of her mother. She felt moisture in her eyes as she stared at her mother's picture. She knew for a fact that her life would have been much better if her mother were there, to defend her and protect her from her step mother and sister who made her life a joke. When she was done packing her things, she stood up dragging her feet to the elevator like she was bearing the weight of the world. The elevator ride to the fifth floor was eerily silent. Every ding of a passing floor only seemed to count down to her doom. It wasn't even up to a day since he became the new boss and her life was already on a roller-coaster. With a deep breath, she pushed the door open.
