The bargain
Seraphina Vale had always believed hell was a metaphor. A scare tactic. A story whispered in churches and classrooms to keep people obedient. Hell was never real just a concept meant to frighten the weak. That belief shattered the night her mother was buried. Rain poured relentlessly over Blackthorn Cemetery, soaking through Seraphina’s thin black dress and turning the ground beneath her feet into mud. The funeral had ended an hour ago. The priest had gone. The mourners had left in quiet clusters, offering empty condolences and sympathetic looks before retreating to lives that still made sense. Seraphina stayed. She stood alone before the fresh mound of earth, staring down at the wooden marker that would soon be replaced with stone. Her mother’s name looked wrong carved into something meant to last forever. Too final. Too cruel. “You promised,” Seraphina whispered, her voice cracking. “You said you wouldn’t leave me.” The wind answered instead, cutting through the graveyard with a sharp howl. Bare trees groaned under its force, branches scraping together like bones. Her chest burned. Breathing felt like swallowing glass. Her mother had been everything her protector, her anchor, her only family. Without her, the world felt vast and merciless. Bills she couldn’t pay. A job that barely kept her afloat. Nights filled with silence so loud it screamed. Seraphina dropped to her knees, fingers digging into wet soil. “I don’t know how to live without you,” she sobbed. The ground pulsed. Not shook pulsed. Seraphina froze, her hand still pressed against the earth. Slowly, she pulled it back, heart hammering. The soil moved again, rising and falling as though something beneath it breathed. “No,” she whispered. “No, no, no…” Heat flooded the air, thick and suffocating. Rain evaporated before it could touch the ground. The night grew unnaturally still. “Seraphina Vale.” Her name slid through the darkness behind her, spoken with intimate precision. She turned. A man stood several feet away where there had been nothing moments before. Tall. Immaculately dressed in a black suit untouched by rain or mud. The shadows bent subtly toward him, as though the night itself recognized his authority. He was devastatingly handsome sharp features, dark hair, lips curved in something that wasn’t quite a smile. His eyes glowed faintly red, like embers buried beneath ash. Fear rooted her in place. “Who are you?” she demanded, forcing the words out. The man studied her calmly. “Someone who understands loss.” Lightning split the sky, illuminating his face in stark white. Thunder followed instantly, loud enough to make her flinch. “I can save her,” he said. The words punched the breath from her lungs. “You’re sick,” Seraphina snapped. “She’s dead.” “No,” he replied gently. “She is dying. Death is not a moment it is a process. One I can interrupt.” Her heart slammed violently against her ribs. “Stop.” “I can bring her back,” he continued, unbothered. “Breathing. Warm. Alive.” Hope flared painfully in her chest, sharp enough to hurt. She hated it. Hated herself for listening. “And what would you want in return?” she whispered. The man smiled slowly. “There is always a cost.” She stood, fists clenched. “I don’t have money.” “I don’t want money.” “Then what?” “Your future.” Fire bloomed in his palm, bright and unnatural, casting long shadows across the gravestones. “My name,” he said softly, “is Lucifer.” Her scream ripped through the night. Flames erupted in a wide circle around them, sealing the cemetery away from the world. The rain vanished entirely as the sky twisted into a storm of red and black. Lucifer extended his hand. Between his fingers, parchment unfurled from nothing stitched from skin, words burning themselves into existence. “A contract,” he said. “You bind yourself to my bloodline. In exchange for your mother’s life.” Her hands shook violently. “Your bloodline includes” “My son,” Lucifer finished. “The heir of Hell.” Tears streamed down her face. She thought of her mother’s laughter. Her warmth. The way she always believed Seraphina could survive anything. She couldn’t survive this. But she couldn’t lose her again. “I accept,” Seraphina whispered. The contract burst into flame. Agony tore through her arm as fire carved a sigil into her flesh. She screamed as blood and magic sealed the oath, branding her soul. Far beneath the earth, ancient bells rang. And on a throne of obsidian, the Devil’s heir opened his eyes.
