BETRAYED
Chapter One: Betrayed
"Sometimes the people you build your future with are the very ones planning your destruction."
The city sparkled beneath the evening sky, its countless lights painting a picture of dreams fulfilled.
Emily Rivers smiled to herself as she stepped out of the taxi, clutching a neatly wrapped gift in one hand and a small bouquet of white lilies in the other.
Five years.
Five long years.
Five years of loving one man with everything she had.
Five years of sacrificing sleep during medical school just to help him prepare for law exams.
Five years of paying his tuition whenever he came up short.
Five years of believing that Mark Ronald would eventually become her husband.
Tonight was supposed to be their anniversary dinner.
Mark had sounded unusually excited over the phone.
"Wear something beautiful," he'd said.
"I have a surprise waiting for you."
Emily had laughed all day.
Bella had teased her relentlessly.
"Girl, if he doesn't propose tonight, I'll personally sue him."
David only smiled quietly, though something about his expression had seemed...sad.
Now, standing in front of the luxurious rooftop restaurant, Emily's heart fluttered.
Maybe...
Maybe Bella was right.
She glanced at her reflection in the glass entrance.
A fitted emerald-green dress hugged her slim figure perfectly.
Her dark wavy hair cascaded over her shoulders.
Her natural beauty required almost no makeup.
Doctors spent most of their days in scrubs, so dressing up like this felt unusual.
She inhaled deeply before walking inside.
The maître d' smiled.
"Good evening, Miss Rivers."
"I'm here to meet Mark Ronald."
"Please, this way."
She followed him through the elegantly decorated restaurant.
Soft violin music floated through the air.
Couples laughed over candlelit dinners.
Everything felt...
Perfect.
Until she heard applause.
Emily frowned.
The crowd ahead had formed a circle.
People were recording something with their phones.
Curious, she stepped closer.
Then...
Her world stopped.
Right in the middle of the restaurant...
Mark Ronald was kneeling.
Not before her.
Before another woman.
Lucy Richards.
The glamorous actress wore a breathtaking diamond dress worth more than Emily's yearly salary.
She smiled proudly while flashing the enormous diamond ring toward the crowd.
Mark held out another ring.
"Lucy Richards..."
His voice echoed through the restaurant.
"You've shown me what true love looks like."
Emily's fingers loosened.
The bouquet slipped from her hands.
The flowers scattered across the polished floor.
"...Will you marry me?"
Lucy covered her mouth dramatically.
"Oh my God..."
"Yes!"
"I'll marry you!"
Thunderous applause erupted.
Champagne bottles popped.
People cheered.
Emily couldn't breathe.
Her ears rang.
No.
No...
This had to be some misunderstanding.
Mark slowly stood before wrapping Lucy in a passionate embrace.
Then...
His eyes met Emily's.
For a split second...
There was surprise.
Then annoyance.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Annoyance.
Emily forced herself forward.
"Mark..."
Her voice trembled.
"What...is this?"
The restaurant suddenly fell silent.
Lucy smirked.
"Oh."
"So she came."
Mark sighed as though Emily had inconvenienced him.
"We need to talk."
Emily laughed weakly.
"Talk?"
"You invited me here."
"You said tonight was special."
"I thought—"
"You thought wrong."
Those three words pierced deeper than any knife.
Emily stared.
Mark slipped the engagement ring onto Lucy's finger before turning fully toward Emily.
"I was going to tell you eventually."
"You've been lying to me?"
"It's not lying."
"I simply found someone better."
Emily blinked.
"...Better?"
Lucy crossed her arms proudly.
Mark didn't even hesitate.
"Emily..."
"You were useful."
Useful.
The word echoed inside her mind.
"You helped me through law school."
"You paid my bills."
"You encouraged me."
"But let's face reality."
His eyes swept over her coldly.
"You're just a middle-class doctor."
He wrapped an arm possessively around Lucy.
"Lucy is beautiful."
"Famous."
"Rich."
"Powerful."
"She can give me everything you've never been able to."
Emily's lips parted.
"I gave you everything I had."
"I know."
"And I appreciate it."
His expression remained emotionless.
"But gratitude isn't love."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"So..."
"These five years meant nothing?"
Mark shrugged.
"I stayed because leaving would've been inconvenient."
Each sentence shattered another piece of her heart.
Lucy stepped closer.
"You know..."
"I always wondered why Mark chose you back in university."
She tilted her head mockingly.
"I guess he was just waiting for someone worthy."
The surrounding guests whispered among themselves.
Emily felt hundreds of eyes staring.
Judging.
Pitying.
Laughing.
"You stole him."
Lucy laughed.
"You can't steal someone who wanted to leave."
Mark looked completely unfazed.
"It's over, Emily."
"You should move on."
She searched desperately for even a trace of the man she'd loved.
Nothing.
Only a stranger.
Cold.
Greedy.
Heartless.
Emily slowly bent down and picked up the anniversary gift she'd bought him.
She stared at it.
A luxury watch.
She'd saved for months.
Without another word...
She dropped it.
The box hit the marble floor.
The expensive watch shattered into pieces.
"So..."
Emily whispered.
"This is what my love was worth."
She looked directly into Mark's eyes one final time.
"I hope one day..."
"You experience the same pain."
Then she walked away.
No one stopped her.
No one called after her.
Outside, the rain began to fall.
Tiny droplets soon turned into a heavy downpour.
Emily walked aimlessly through the streets.
Cars splashed water onto the pavement.
People hurried beneath umbrellas.
But she didn't care.
Her vision blurred from tears.
Memories flooded her mind.
Mark studying while she worked double hospital shifts.
Mark promising to marry her after graduation.
Mark kissing her forehead before exams.
Mark telling her she'd always be enough.
Lies.
Every single one.
She laughed bitterly.
"What an idiot..."
"I really believed him."
Hours passed.
She had no idea where she was.
Then...
A glowing neon sign caught her attention.
MIDNIGHT LOUNGE
A luxurious bar she'd never noticed before.
Emily had never been much of a drinker.
As a doctor, she spent more time warning patients about alcohol than drinking it herself.
But tonight...
Nothing mattered.
She pushed open the doors.
Music vibrated through the room.
Crystal chandeliers hung above expensive leather booths.
Powerful businessmen.
Politicians.
Foreign elites.
Everyone here looked wealthy.
Emily walked straight to the bar.
"What can I get you?"
"The strongest thing you have."
The bartender hesitated.
"Miss—"
"I said..."
"The strongest."
Minutes later...
One shot.
Then another.
Then another.
The burning sensation in her throat felt strangely comforting.
Maybe if she drank enough...
She'd forget.
Across the room...
Dark eyes observed her.
Luciano Moretti.
The man many feared more than death itself.
He sat alone in the VIP lounge overlooking the entire bar.
Tailored black suit.
Broad shoulders.
Sharp jawline.
Cold gray eyes that rarely betrayed emotion.
His mere presence forced everyone nearby into silence.
Several beautiful women had attempted to approach him tonight.
Each left moments later with frightened expressions.
He wasn't interested.
He never was.
Until now.
His gaze remained fixed on the young woman at the bar.
She was clearly drunk.
But unlike everyone else, she wasn't trying to impress anyone.
She simply looked...
Broken.
"Boss."
His right-hand man, Marco, leaned closer.
"Should I have security escort her out?"
Luciano continued watching her.
"No."
"Keep watching."
Marco blinked.
It wasn't like Luciano to pay attention to strangers.
Especially women.
Meanwhile...
Emily finished another glass before standing.
The room spun violently.
"Oh..."
Maybe she'd had too much.
She attempted to walk.
Her heels betrayed her.
She stumbled backward—
Strong arms caught her before she could hit the floor.
Her head rested against a firm chest.
She inhaled a subtle scent of cedarwood and expensive cologne.
"I'm..."
"So sorry..."
she mumbled.
Luciano looked down at her.
For the first time in years...
His heartbeat became strangely uneven.
Emily slowly lifted her head.
Their eyes met.
Gray.
And blue.
Neither spoke.
Something invisible seemed to pass between them.
Recognition.
Curiosity.
Something neither of them could explain.
"I'm okay..."
Emily whispered, trying unsuccessfully to steady herself.
She swayed again.
Luciano caught her waist effortlessly.
"You don't look okay."
His voice was deep.
Commanding.
The kind of voice that expected obedience.
Emily laughed sadly.
"My boyfriend proposed today."
Luciano remained silent.
"To someone else."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"I guess..."
"I wasn't enough."
Something dangerous flickered behind Luciano's eyes.
He didn't know why.
He didn't know her.
Yet hearing another man reduce this woman to tears stirred an unfamiliar anger deep inside him.
Emily smiled weakly.
"You have pretty eyes."
Marco nearly choked.
No one...
Absolutely no one...
Had ever spoken to Luciano Moretti so casually.
Luciano, however, didn't react.
He simply continued looking at her.
"What is your name?"
She smiled sleepily.
"Emily."
The name settled strangely in his chest.
As though he'd heard it before.
As though fate itself had whispered it years ago.
Before he could question the feeling, Emily's knees buckled again.
Without thinking, Luciano lifted her effortlessly into his arms.
She instinctively curled closer, exhausted and vulnerable.
Marco stared in disbelief.
"The car is ready, Boss."
Luciano's gaze never left the sleeping woman.
"Good."
"Take us home."
Somewhere far away...
Two ancient mafia empires continued searching for a little girl who had disappeared nineteen years ago.
Neither family knew...
That destiny had finally brought her back into the orbit of the man she had been promised to long before she could even speak.
Neither Luciano nor Emily realized it yet.
But one night...
One chance encounter...
Was about to awaken a war that had slept for nearly two decades.
