Prologue
"We must keep our land hidden from the mortals, they're greedy and will rip it apart for its beauty. From now on, only those who are of our blood will be able to have access to the barrier. Any mortal won't even sense it there, they'll go straight through our homes. As if the ocean was void of our existence."
The folk surrounding the powerful man voiced their agreement, vowing to keep themselves and their history safe. The field they stood in was filled with many creatures of different species. Werewolves crowded the rocks that surrounded the large opening, vampires hid in the shadows, safe from the sunlight. Fairies of different sizes were either fluttering in the air or standing in the grass. Mermaids, sirens and other undersea creatures were lying on the banks of a lake, splashing the sparkling water with their tails. They all watched the man standing before them, hope shining within their eyes.
He wasn't their king, he was only the leader to the fairies, however he was most wise out of them all. He was the only being who has been alive the longest, filled with the wisdom of many years. Despite carrying hundreds of years on his shoulders, the man didn't seem past thirty. His skin wasn't wrinkling, his eyes didn't lose their brightness, his hair never losing its chocolate color. His wings shined like green tinted diamonds, sparkling in the sun's glare.
"What if they see us anyway?" A small, nervous pixie questioned. She was barely noticeable within the small bundle of flowers, her pink skin easily blending in.
The older fairy smiled softly, "I understand your fears. The wall that I will put up is invisible, along with anything it's guarding. The spell is unbreakable, only by a being as powerful as I can rid us of it. I still suggest each kingdom has its own patrols, not only for mortals but for each other. Right now, we are all calm as we are gathered together. But I know we all struggle with our own civil problems, such as werewolves trying to take over the vampires' land. I'll do everything I can to keep you all safe."
They whispered among each other, already forming plans to keep their kingdoms safe. Many brought their young closer, cuddling them in their arms or wings. Males stood protectively over their families, ready to give their lives for their safety.
"Thank you, Rowan," a female nymph called out as she held her baby close.
Rowan nodded, "You're welcome."
Rowan released a sigh as they began separating to their lands, needing to prepare for the future. He looked out across the forest, wishing it didn't have to be like this. He remembered a time where humans and the people of beati in terram got along. They held a treaty, the humans promising to not steal from them as long as they kept them safe from the other countries. But greed had gotten the best of the mortals as they attempted to steal their fruit, trees, water and even their animals. He was disgusted at the memory, knowing they only wanted the animals for their experiments.
Unlike the mortal world, they had dragons, unicorns, alicorns and more. They were beautiful to look at from afar, but rather dangerous when they felt threatened. They had killed many humans to protect themselves, escaping from whatever awaited them. His heart broke, it was a dark time where forests would burn and kingdoms would clash. Werewolves began ripping into the mortal world, killing any human that dared challenge them. Those within the fairy kingdom would cast spells on the werewolves, trying to keep peace between them and the humans. But it didn't work, no matter what, the hatred and betrayal had already been planted. The seed for war was something no one wanted, but it was sadly necessary.
Despite how much Rowan loathed war, it was needed for them to no longer be blinded by the treaty. They were able to see the humans for who they really were, violent and rapacious. Even a year later, the land was still healing from the many fires that had crawled across it. Burning everything in its path, including half of the fairy population. Pixies, fairies, fay, nymphs, etc. Many of them had died painful deaths, their screams forever embedded in his mind.
"Rowan?"
The angelic voice of his wife pulled him from his thoughts, waking him from the awful nightmare. He relaxed in her arms as she hugged him, knowing what was causing him such distress. She peppered his back with small kisses, soothing him further.
"You're thinking of the dark months, aren't you?" She asked quietly.
He nodded, "I'll forever be scarred by it."
"I know, everyone else is as well."
He took a deep breath, "Did Avery give you a prophecy? That's the only time you ever come to one of these gatherings."
"Yes, he said the queen and king will birth a powerful being."
He raised an eyebrow, "Are you pregnant?"
"No," she laughed. "But our son and his wife will be taking our spots soon."
"Ah, but I thought Primrose couldn't have a child?"
His wife sighed as she pulled away, "She thought so too, but according to this prophecy...she can."
"At what cost?"
"We're not sure."
He turned and took her hand, placing a loving kiss on the soft flesh. His green eyes met with her's, nothing but love shined in both of them. Her golden hair shined in the sunlight, one of the many things he adored about her. Wrapping his arms around her waist, he pulled her close.
"Let's hope this child will be the answer to this oncoming war. The humans will stop at nothing to find us again, I can't wipe their memories unfortunately."
