THE ANNOUNCEMENT

Episode 5 THE ANNOUNCEMENT The first thing Clara noticed when she arrived at Lancaster Holdings the next morning was the silence. Not the peaceful kind. The uncomfortable kind. The kind that existed when everyone had something to say but no one was brave enough to say it. Employees who had once watched her leave this building in humiliation now stared at her with curiosity. Some looked shocked. Some looked guilty. Some looked away. Clara walked through the lobby with steady steps, refusing to let the memories pull her backward. Five years ago, she had walked through these same doors with tears burning her eyes. Today, she walked through them wearing a tailored black suit, carrying her company's proposal, and knowing exactly who she was. She was not Ethan Lancaster's abandoned fiancée. She was Clara Bennett. CEO of Bennett Design Group. A woman who had rebuilt everything she lost. "Ms. Bennett." Ethan's assistant greeted her near the elevator. "Mr. Lancaster is waiting." Clara gave a small nod. Of course he was. After yesterday's agreement, their lives had suddenly become connected again. A contract. A performance. Nothing more. At least, that was what she told herself. The elevator doors opened. Ethan was standing outside his office. For a moment, neither of them spoke. He looked different from the man she remembered. Not physically. He was still the same Ethan Lancaster. The same sharp features. The same commanding presence. The same confidence that made everyone in the room notice him. But something had changed. There was exhaustion in his eyes. A weight he carried silently. "Good morning, Clara." She almost reacted to the familiarity. Almost. "Good morning, Mr. Lancaster." The distance in her voice reminded him of everything he had lost. He opened the office door. "We need to discuss today's announcement." Clara entered. His office looked exactly as she remembered. The expensive furniture. The view of the city. The place where he once held her while promising they would build a future together. But the memories belonged to another lifetime. Ethan placed a folder on the desk. "The media will announce our engagement at noon." Clara opened the folder. Inside were details about their public appearances, interviews, and upcoming events. Everything was organized. Everything was calculated. A perfect billionaire romance for the world to believe. "You have planned everything." "I have to." Clara looked up. "Because this is business." Ethan did not answer. His silence was enough. She closed the folder. "Good." His eyebrows lifted slightly. "Good?" "Yes." She stood. "If we are pretending, then we should do it professionally." Something about her words bothered him. Because she made it sound so easy. Like pretending to love him was simple. Like the woman who once dreamed of marrying him had disappeared completely. Maybe she had. At exactly noon, every major news outlet released the announcement. LANCHESTER HEIR ETHAN LANCASTER ENGAGED TO SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSWOMAN CLARA BENNETT The headline spread across the internet within minutes. Pictures of Ethan and Clara appeared everywhere. A powerful billionaire. A successful female CEO. A perfect couple. The world loved the story. They saw romance. They saw destiny. They did not see the contract hidden behind the smiles. They did not see the pain between two people who had once loved each other. Inside Lancaster Holdings, the reaction was immediate. Victor Lancaster looked at the news on his computer screen. His expression darkened. "Clara Bennett." He remembered her. The quiet architect who had disappeared five years ago. The woman everyone believed had betrayed Ethan. But Victor was not concerned about her return. He was concerned about what her return meant. Ethan was becoming unpredictable. And unpredictable people were dangerous. "Interesting." A voice behind him spoke. Victor turned. Sophia Monroe stood near the doorway. Elegant. Beautiful. Controlled. But her eyes were filled with anger. "You knew about this?" Victor glanced back at the screen. "No." Sophia walked closer. "She is back." Her voice became colder. "After everything." Victor studied her. "You seem worried." Sophia smiled. "I am not worried." But the lie was obvious. Because Clara Bennett was not supposed to return. Five years ago, she was supposed to disappear forever. That evening, Clara attended her first public event as Ethan's fiancée. The charity gala was held at one of New York's most luxurious hotels. Cameras flashed the moment they entered. Ethan placed a hand lightly on her waist. A perfect gesture. A perfect image. Clara smiled for the cameras. Nobody would know. Nobody would see. Nobody would understand that the hand touching her waist belonged to the same man who once destroyed her. "You look beautiful." Ethan's voice was quiet. Clara continued smiling. "Remember, Mr. Lancaster. This is an act." The words were soft enough that only he heard them. His expression changed. "Do you really think I can't tell the difference?" Clara looked at him. "Between what?" "Between pretending and reality." For a second, the noise around them disappeared. Because there was something honest in his voice. Something that made her heart react before her mind could stop it. Then a familiar voice interrupted. "Ethan." They turned. Sophia Monroe stood there. Wearing a designer gown. Looking like she belonged beside him. Her smile was perfect. But her eyes were not. "Congratulations." Sophia looked at Clara. "How unexpected." Clara returned the smile politely. "Life has a way of surprising people." Sophia's smile tightened. "Yes." She looked between them. "Sometimes people return when they should have stayed gone." The words were polite. But the warning was clear. Ethan's expression hardened. "Sophia." She immediately softened. "I was only saying hello." But Clara noticed something. The way Sophia looked at Ethan. The way she looked at her. This was not a woman meeting an old acquaintance. This was a woman protecting something she believed belonged to her. And Clara understood one thing. Her return had not only brought Ethan back into her life. It had awakened enemies who had been waiting in the shadows. Later that night, Clara stood alone on the balcony of the hotel. The city lights reflected in her eyes. She thought she was prepared for Ethan. She thought she was prepared for the memories. But she had forgotten one thing. When you reopen the door to the past... You also invite everything hidden behind it. Her phone suddenly vibrated. A message from an unknown number appeared. She opened it. Her face slowly lost color. YOU THINK YOU WON BECAUSE YOU CAME BACK? YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHY YOU WERE DESTROYED FIVE YEARS AGO. Clara stared at the screen. Her heartbeat increased. Because whoever sent the message knew the truth. The truth about that night. The truth about why her life had fallen apart. And before she could respond, another message arrived. STAY AWAY FROM ETHAN LANCASTER... OR YOU WILL LOSE EVERYTHING AGAIN. End of Chapter 5
