THE DAY EVERYTHING BROKE
Episode 1
THE DAY EVERYTHING BROKE
The day Ethan Lancaster stopped believing in me was the day I learned love could disappear faster than a heartbeat.
I still remember the sound of the rain hitting the floor-to-ceiling windows of Lancaster Holdings.
I remember the cold marble beneath my feet.
I remember the way hundreds of eyes watched me as if I had become a stranger overnight.
But most of all, I remember the look on Ethan's face.
The man who once promised to protect me looked at me like I was the enemy.
"Tell me it's not true, Clara."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
That was what scared me the most.
Ethan Lancaster was never a man who lost control. The world knew him as the ruthless CEO who could destroy companies with a single decision and make billion-dollar deals before breakfast.
But I knew the man behind the reputation.
Or at least, I thought I did.
I knew the man who held me when nightmares woke me in the middle of the night.
The man who cooked terrible pasta because he knew I hated expensive restaurants.
The man who whispered that my dreams mattered more than his family's expectations.
The man who promised me forever.
"Ethan..." My voice trembled as I stepped closer. "I don't know what you're talking about."
His jaw tightened.
"Don't lie to me."
The accusation hurt more than I expected.
Not because he was angry.
Because he sounded disappointed.
I looked around the boardroom.
The directors.
The executives.
The assistants standing near the door.
Everyone was waiting for my answer.
Everyone had already decided I was guilty.
"What happened?" I asked quietly.
Ethan pushed a folder across the table.
It stopped in front of me.
"Open it."
My fingers felt numb as I lifted the folder.
Inside were documents.
Bank transfers.
Emails.
Security records.
My eyes moved across the pages, and my heart slowly began to break.
There were transactions showing millions of dollars transferred into an account under my name.
There were emails that appeared to be conversations between me and a rival company's executives.
There were security images showing someone who looked like me entering a private meeting.
But it wasn't me.
"I didn't do this."
The words came out immediately.
Almost desperately.
"I swear, Ethan, I have never met these people."
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Only Ethan stared at me.
"You expect me to believe that?"
The question destroyed something inside me.
Because after everything we had shared, after all the nights we spent talking about our future, after every promise he had made...
He was asking me if he should believe me.
"I expect you to know me."
My voice cracked.
"I expect you to remember who I am."
For a moment, something flickered in his eyes.
Pain.
Doubt.
Maybe even love.
Then it disappeared.
"I know exactly who you are."
The room became silent.
"You're the woman who betrayed me."
My breath stopped.
I stared at him, waiting for him to take the words back.
He didn't.
"Ethan, please."
I walked toward him.
"Listen to me. Someone is trying to frame me."
"Enough."
His voice echoed through the room.
I froze.
"I spent years believing I was different from my father."
His expression changed slightly.
"I believed I could trust the people closest to me."
My heart sank.
Because I knew what he was talking about.
Ethan's father had once trusted someone who betrayed the Lancaster family.
That betrayal had destroyed his parents' marriage and changed the way Ethan viewed relationships forever.
But I never thought he would look at me the same way.
"I am not that person."
I swallowed the pain in my throat.
"I love you."
The words came out before I could stop them.
A few people in the room looked away.
Ethan closed his eyes briefly.
When he opened them again, they were cold.
"Love doesn't erase betrayal."
A tear slipped down my cheek.
I hated that everyone saw it.
I hated that he saw it.
Because Ethan Lancaster had always told me I was the strongest woman he knew.
But standing there, listening to the man I loved accuse me of destroying his family, I felt like I was falling apart.
"Are you ending this?"
I whispered.
The question was almost impossible to ask.
His silence answered before his words did.
"Yes."
One word.
One decision.
The future I had imagined vanished.
"The engagement is over."
The room erupted into quiet whispers.
I looked down at my hand.
The diamond ring Ethan had placed there six months ago suddenly felt heavier than ever.
"I bought this ring because I thought you were my home."
His voice softened for only a second.
Then he continued.
"But I was wrong."
My chest tightened.
Slowly, painfully, I removed the ring.
I placed it on the table between us.
"I hope one day you remember the woman you lost before you remember the mistake you think I made."
For the first time, Ethan looked away.
And somehow, that hurt more.
Because anger would have been easier.
Hate would have been easier.
But seeing the man I loved unable to look at me felt like the final proof that I had already lost him.
I turned around and walked toward the door.
Every step felt heavier than the last.
Nobody stopped me.
Not even him.
The rain had become heavier by the time I reached the street.
I stood outside Lancaster Holdings, staring up at the building that represented everything Ethan had chosen over me.
My phone rang.
I almost ignored it.
Almost.
"Hello?"
"Miss Bennett?"
It was my doctor.
My heart immediately tightened.
"Yes?"
There was a pause.
"Your test results are ready."
I closed my eyes.
Somehow, I already knew.
"You're pregnant."
The world stopped.
The sound of the rain disappeared.
The people walking past me disappeared.
Everything disappeared except those two words.
Pregnant.
I placed one hand over my stomach.
A life.
A tiny piece of Ethan and me.
A child who had no idea that the world had already changed before they even entered it.
I should have felt happy.
Instead, I felt terrified.
Because the man who should have been standing beside me had just walked away.
And he didn't even know he was going to be a father.
I looked back at the Lancaster building.
Somewhere inside those walls was Ethan.
The man I loved.
The man who had broken my heart.
The man who had just lost the chance to know his child.
At that moment, I made a decision.
I would not chase him.
I would not beg him to believe me.
If Ethan Lancaster wanted to believe the worst about me, then I would let him.
But I promised myself one thing.
One day, he would learn the truth.
And when that day came...
He would finally understand exactly what he had lost.
Because the woman he abandoned today would never exist again.
Five years later, Ethan Lancaster would come looking for me.
But by then...
It would already be too late.
