Chapter 7: Who Sent The Van

508 Words
Training with Adrian was hell. Day 1: I threw up. Day 2: I got a black eye. Day 3: I finally managed to dodge him once. "You’re getting better," he said, tossing me a water bottle. "But you still telegraph your punches." "Sorry I'm not 300 years old," I panted. He smirked. "Fair." At night we hunted for answers. Not blood. Information. Adrian had contacts. Old ones. Creepy ones. "Someone from inside the Council hired the hunters," he said on day 4. "Someone who wants me gone." "Why you?" "Because I’m a rogue," he said simply. "And because I refused to join them 200 years ago." That night, we followed a lead to an underground club. Vampires only. "You have to act like my date," Adrian whispered in my ear as we walked in. "Clingy. In love. Mine." "I am yours," I said before I could stop myself. He froze. Then his hand tightened on mine. "Good." Inside was dark, red lights, loud music. And blood. In glasses. Everyone stared at me. The human. "Who's the snack?" someone whispered. Adrian pulled me closer. "Touch her and you die." We found him in the VIP room. The vampire from the Council. The one in red. "Lady Selene," Adrian said, voice cold. "We need to talk." "Adrian," she smiled. "And the little human. How cute." "You sent the van," I said before Adrian could stop me. Her smile widened. "Smart girl. Yes. I did. I wanted to see if you were worth keeping alive." "And?" "And..." She stood up. "You're a liability. Both of you." She snapped her fingers. 10 vampires came out of the shadows. Adrian stepped in front of me. "Run if I say run." "I'm not running," I said. I picked up a broken bottle from the table. Adrian looked at me. Proud. Scared. "Okay." The fight was fast. Bloody. Adrian took down 7 by himself. I got one. Stabbed him in the leg with the bottle. He screamed. Adrian looked at me like I hung the moon. We cornered Selene. "Who else is with you?" Adrian growled. "No one," she spat. "I just hate rogues." "Liar." Before he could do anything, alarms went off. Council guards. "Time to go," Adrian said, grabbing my hand. We ran. Through back alleys. Over rooftops. I couldn't breathe but I didn't stop. Finally we stopped on a roof. Safe. For now. I was shaking. Covered in someone else's blood. Adrian checked me over. "Are you hurt?" "No," I said. "You?" He shook his head. Then he kissed me. Hard. Desperate. "I thought I lost you," he whispered against my lips. "You didn't," I said. "I'm here." We stayed on that roof until sunrise. "So," I said. "What now?" "Now," Adrian said, "we go to war." My phone buzzed. Unknown number. Text: `We have your sister. Come alone. Or she dies.` My blood ran cold. I don't have a sister. Adrian read it and his face went dark. "They're not after me anymore," he said. "They're after you." [TO BE CONTINUED...]
