Chapter 1
Clara's POV
"Go home. You've worked far too much overtime this week. Get some rest for once."
My supervisor practically pushed me toward the door, a warm smile on her face.
"Okay, okay. I'm going," I laughed, gathering my worn briefcase.
Today was supposed to be a good day.
A day worth celebrating.
My father had finally reached another recovery milestone, and for the first time in years, things seemed to be moving forward. I was also close to securing a placement with one of the city's top corporate recruitment firms.
A fresh start.
A chance to rebuild the future that had been stolen from us.
For the first time in a long while, I felt hopeful.
Outside, rain poured relentlessly from the dark evening sky.
I stepped out of the subway station and hurried toward the private clinic where my father was staying. As I approached the entrance, a familiar black Mercedes caught my attention.
Julian Sterling.
My grip tightened around my umbrella.
What was he doing here?
Julian had been my father's trusted lawyer for years. He was supposed to be handling the final restructuring of what remained of our family's estate.
His visit wasn't scheduled until later.
Something felt off.
A strange uneasiness settled in my chest.
I entered through the side entrance and headed toward the administration wing. As I walked down the quiet hallway, I heard voices coming from a partially open office door.
I immediately recognized one of them.
Julian.
Instinctively, I stopped.
The conversation sounded serious.
Curiosity got the better of me.
I moved closer and stood silently outside the door.
"We never expected the liquidation to happen that quickly," Julian said.
His voice was low and uneasy.
Another man spoke.
"When exactly did the Valez files go through?"
At the mention of that name, my entire body tensed.
Valez.
Adrian Valez.
The man I had blamed for destroying my family.
"Five years ago," Julian answered. "Right before Christmas."
A long silence followed.
Then he continued.
"There were too many transactions happening at once. The company was already unstable. Contracts were frozen, assets were being divided, and everyone was arguing about what should happen next."
My heart began to pound.
"The Vance Shipping Group was practically falling apart," Julian said. "No one was paying attention. Mistakes were made."
"Mistakes?" the administrator asked.
Julian sighed heavily.
"I failed to protect several key insurance policies and trust accounts. By the time we realized what had happened, the damage was already done."
I frowned.
Something wasn't making sense.
For years, everyone had blamed Adrian Valez for our downfall.
For years, I believed he had intentionally destroyed my family's company.
But the way Julian was speaking...
It sounded different.
It sounded like he was hiding something.
"When people started asking questions," Julian continued quietly, "it was easier to let everyone believe Valez Corporation was responsible."
My breath caught.
The world around me suddenly felt unsteady.
No.
No, no, no.
That couldn't be true.
I pressed my hand against the wall to steady myself.
For five years, I had hated Adrian Valez.
For five years, I had carried that hatred with me every single day.
Every sleepless night.
Every unpaid bill.
Every tear my father shed after losing everything.
And now I was hearing that the story I had believed all along might have been a lie.
A complete lie.
The office door suddenly creaked open.
I looked up.
Julian stepped into the hallway.
His eyes widened the moment he saw me standing there.
The color drained from his face.
"Clara..."
Neither of us moved.
The silence stretched between us.
Pain.
Shock.
Betrayal.
Everything crashed into me at once.
"You lied to me," I whispered.
Julian's expression darkened.
"Clara, please. Let me explain."
But I didn't want explanations.
Not anymore.
I wanted the truth.
And somehow, I knew that truth would lead me to the one man I had spent years hating.
Adrian Valez.
The enemy I swore I would never forgive.
The enemy who was about to change my life forever.
