Alexander shot me a look like I was an i***t and then silently rolled over and sat up.
It took him a while to actually get up and start getting ready for the day. As he walked to the bathroom, I noticed that he was moving a bit awkwardly—his legs spread slightly apart and his arms hanging stiffly by his sides, almost as if they had gone numb.
That was when it hit me... I had clung to him like a pillow all night.
No wonder his arms were numb—he'd probably stayed in the same position the entire time just so he wouldn't wake me up. 'What a gentleman.'
After we both got ready, we headed downstairs for breakfast. William and Chris were already seated at the table.
"Good morning, Alina!" Chris greeted me enthusiastically, his face lighting up with a bright, youthful smile.
William gestured for me to sit beside him, his expression warm. "Alina, come have breakfast. How did you sleep last night?"
I shot a quick glance at Alexander and playfully winked. "I slept great, thanks to Alexander."
Alexander looked slightly embarrassed, keeping his head down as he quietly ate his breakfast.
But soon enough, he brought up the topic of breaking off the engagement. "Grandpa, whether you agree or not, I'm going to end this engagement with Alina. I just hope you'll understand.
Before William could respond, Chris excitedly chimed in, "So if you break off the engagement with Alina, can I get engaged to her?"
Alexander frowned. "Don't be ridiculous. You're too young for this, Chris."
"I'll be old enough in six months!"
Chris shot back, clearly annoyed, and then turned to me with a hopeful expression. "Alina, come hang out with me later! I'll take you to a special place!"
His earnestness made me laugh. He reminded me of an energetic golden retriever.
Seeing me laugh, Alexander's tone became slightly warning. "Alina, he's still in high school. You know what that means, right? You should at least wait until he's an adult!"
I was speechless. 'What the hell is he talking about?'
William remained silent, quietly eating his breakfast with a thoughtful expression.
Chris noticed my hesitation and asked nervously, "Alina, you... you don't want to hang out with me?"
I smiled and shook my head. "It's not that. It's just..."
I glanced at Alexander. "It's just that I haven't broken off the engagement with Alexander yet."
"Don't worry. That'll be taken care of soon!" Chris said confidently. "Alex, hurry up and get it done!"
Alexander shot him a glare but didn't say anything.
After breakfast, Alexander pulled me aside, his expression serious. "I've changed my mind. I'm not going to break off the engagement."
I was shocked. "Why not?"
Alexander looked at me earnestly. "Chris isn't an adult yet. If I break off the engagement now, he'll just keep bothering you. I can't let that happen. This is... also to protect you."
His completely serious reasoning made me let out an exasperated laugh. "You're overthinking this. I'm not going to date him."
"It's not up for discussion," Alexander replied firmly. "At least not until he's older."
I was at a loss for words. My third attempt to break off an engagement was thwarted—by the most ridiculous reason yet!
Frustrated, I stormed out of the room and headed straight to the garden. The fresh air and bright sunshine did nothing to improve my mood. If anything, I felt even more agitated. I paced back and forth, kicking small stones along the path.
Just then, Chris popped out from behind a bush, looking around to make sure no one was watching before hurrying over to me. With a conspiratorial tone, he said, "Alina, I have a football game this afternoon, and a star player is coming to coach us. You should come and watch me play! The boys will be so jealous of me!"
I hesitated, seeing the excitement in his eyes. "Are you sure? Cuz if we go out together, Alexander will be really upset."
Chris' expression faltered, and he lowered his head, mumbling, "I am... but... but all my friends tease me because I don't have a girlfriend. They say I'm just some loser nobody wants..."
He looked up at me with big, pleading eyes. "Alina, please help me out. Just pretend to be my girlfriend for a little while, okay? Please?"
His puppy-dog eyes softened my resolve, and I finally agreed to his request.
"Alright, I'll do it."
Chris' face lit up with joy, and he excitedly grabbed my hand, shaking it. "Thank you, Alina! You're the best!"
Seeing how happy he was, I couldn't help but smile.
That afternoon, Chris took me to his school's football field, where he made sure I had the most prominent seat in the stands.
Chris was a key player on the team, and watching him run around the field, full of energy, I couldn't believe this was the same guy who worried about not having a girlfriend. The girls in the stands screamed for him nonstop—he was far from unpopular!
Suddenly, my attention was drawn to a tall figure.
Standing on the sidelines, his tousled blonde hair gleamed in the sunlight, and his piercing green eyes were mesmerizing. His athletic build was more impressive than any player I'd ever seen!
It was... Oliver Green! Another one of my fiancés!
