Elena stared at Lucien, her breath caught in her chest. His words hung in the air, heavy and impossible. A vampire. He couldn’t be serious—he couldn’t be telling the truth. And yet… deep down, she knew he wasn’t lying.
The way he had disappeared into the mist. The way his dark eyes seemed to see right through her. The way her heart raced every time he looked at her, like prey caught in a predator’s gaze.
“You’re… you’re joking, right?” she whispered, her voice shaky.
Lucien didn’t smile. He didn’t blink. He just watched her, his expression unreadable.
“I wish I were,” he said softly. “But this is the truth, Elena. And you needed to know it—before it’s too late.”
“Too late for what?” she asked, taking a step back, her pulse hammering in her ears.
Lucien hesitated, his jaw tightening. For a moment, he looked almost… sad. As if he were carrying the weight of centuries on his shoulders.
“Too late to stay safe,” he said finally. “You shouldn’t have come near the woods. You shouldn’t have seen me. Now… they know about you.”
Elena frowned, confusion and fear swirling inside her. “They? Who’s *they*?”
Lucien’s gaze darkened, and his voice dropped to a whisper. “Other vampires. Dangerous ones. They saw me watching you, and now they think you’re… mine.”
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. “Yours?”
Lucien took a step closer, his eyes locking onto hers. “In my world, when a vampire takes an interest in a human, it’s… permanent. They think I’ve claimed you. And that makes you a target.”
Elena’s knees felt weak, and she gripped the edge of a nearby bookshelf to steady herself. This wasn’t happening. It couldn’t be happening.
“What do they want?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Lucien’s expression hardened. “To hurt you. To hurt me. To remind me that I can’t love a human without consequences.”
The word *love* sent a jolt through Elena’s chest, but she pushed it aside. “Why are you telling me this? Why not just… stay away from me?”
Lucien’s eyes softened, and for the first time, she saw something vulnerable beneath his cold, distant exterior.
“Because I can’t,” he said quietly. “I’ve tried, but I can’t stay away from you, Elena. You’ve already become part of my world, whether you like it or not.”
Elena’s heart was racing so fast she thought it might burst. She wanted to run, to hide, to pretend this wasn’t real. But she also knew there was no going back. Not now.
“What do we do?” she asked, surprising herself with how calm she sounded.
Lucien stepped even closer, until he was standing right in front of her. She could feel the coldness radiating from him, like he carried the chill of the night in his bones.
“I’ll protect you,” he said softly. “No matter what. But you have to trust me.”
Elena searched his eyes, looking for any trace of deception, but all she saw was honesty—and something else. Something dark and dangerous, but also beautiful.
“Okay,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. “I trust you.”
Lucien’s lips curved into a faint smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes.
“Good,” he said. “Because the darkness is already coming for you, Elena. And from now on, you’ll need me to survive.”
Elena shivered, not from the cold, but from the weight of his words. She had just stepped into a world she didn’t understand—a world of blood, danger, and obsession. And she had no idea if she would ever make it out alive.
