Whispers in the fog
The town of Blackthorn was drowning in mist. Every night, the fog rolled in thick and heavy, curling around the ancient lampposts and turning the narrow streets into endless tunnels of gray. Elena Harper pulled her coat tighter around her body as she walked home, her boots tapping softly against the damp cobblestones. It was late—later than she’d meant to stay. The small clock inside Blackthorn Books had struck nine an hour ago, but she’d been so absorbed in her sketching that she’d lost track of time. Now, the streets were deserted, and a chill crept down her spine that had nothing to do with the cold. Elena had lived in Blackthorn her whole life, yet the town always felt a little off after dark. The shadows seemed deeper, the silence too loud, as if something unseen was always watching. She quickened her pace, her breath coming out in soft clouds. As she neared the edge of the woods, where the twisted trees stood like dark sentinels, she heard it—a rustling sound, barely audible over the whisper of the wind. She paused, her heart thudding. “Hello?” she called, her voice shaky. No answer. She shook her head, forcing a laugh. “Get it together, Elena,” she muttered, turning back toward the path. But just as she took a step, something—or someone—moved in the shadows. A tall figure emerged from the mist, his presence so sudden and silent that Elena’s breath caught in her throat. He was dressed in black, his face half-hidden by the hood of his coat, but even from a distance, she could feel his gaze—intense, unblinking, like a predator watching its prey. “Lost?” His voice was deep, smooth, and strangely familiar, as though it carried echoes of forgotten dreams. Elena swallowed hard. “No, I’m fine. Just heading home.” He tilted his head slightly, studying her. For a moment, she thought he might say something else, but instead, he stepped aside, allowing her to pass. She hesitated, her instincts screaming at her to run, but there was something about him—something dark and magnetic—that made her feet stay rooted to the ground. “Be careful,” he said softly, his voice laced with something that sounded almost like a warning. “The woods aren’t safe at night.” Before she could respond, he melted back into the fog, disappearing as suddenly as he’d appeared. Elena stood there, her heart racing, her mind spinning with questions. Who was he? And why did it feel like her life had just changed forever?
